Toph was conflicted. On one hand, some people she knew from home were finally in the City. Bonus that one of them was her friend.

On the other hand, Soundwave had just.. died. And in the worst way. She'd been doing her best to pretend it hadn't happened, that he'd just been ported out, but she couldn't keep that up forever and knew it. Some stress release would be nice.

She made her way to the park, "looking" for anyone who seemed out of the ordinary once she reached the best area for fighting.

While Hiei wasn't generally inclined to fighting children, it wasn't the first time Toph had asked him for a fight--and he supposed there was no harm in seeing how competent she really was.

He didn't really know if the girl that had ventured into his area was the girl from the communicator, but he was confident he would once he heard her voice. So he dropped down from his tree--silently, though probably not to someone who got most of their sensory information from the ground--and approached her from behind.

Oh, that was definitely not invisible to her. She thought she'd "seen" someone small in that tree, and the silent leap down confirmed it. Huh, a short guy. Sweet.

However, she didn't react, acting as if she saw nothing, heard nothing, knew nothing.

Until he got within arms' reach of her, that is. In front of herself, she flicked a hand, then jerked it sharply upwards, and suddenly a pillar of rock thrust itself from the ground directly in front of his face.

"It's rude to sneak up on someone, you know."

Hiei was good enough not to jump back--among other things, he had a serious aversion to retreating from anyone, especially a child--but his hand did immediately go to his sword. Maybe this would be a good fight, after all.

"Is it." One thing Hiei was particularly proud of lately was his increasing competency in English speaking.

She shrugged, still not turning around. Another hand flick sunk the column again. He had some pretty sweet reflexes to not have run into it.

"Don't you think so?" Good thing he could speak English; she didn't know Japanese.

Considering he was naturally fast enough that he sometimes appeared invisible to the untrained eye, pretty sweet was a good word for his reflexes.

In this case, he decided it would be best to stand his ground. Who knew if the column would reappear, after all.

"Not at all." And that was the main reason he had taken the initiative to start learning the language.

"Well, you're wrong, then."

Yeah, those were better than her reflexes. Not that she knew how awesome his were, yet. It'd still be an interesting fight, hopefully.

She finally deigned to turn around, showing him a face full of black hair and faded green eyes half-hidden behind it.

If Hiei understood the significance of the appearance of her eyes, he didn't give any indication that he did; instead he tilted his chin up and allowed himself a smirk.

"No, I don't think so. But more interesting is what skills you have."

His English wasn't as precise as his Japanese, but he was at least understandable.

Finally, someone shorter than him. :D vision_in_stone July 28 2010, 12:49:23 UTC
"Pretty sure I told you before that Earthbending is awesome."

She couldn't see that smirk, but something about his voice told her he was smirking, and that was a little annoying. Hmph.

"In your opinion. Mine will see."

And then came the unmistakable sound of a sword being drawn. Hiei was ready if she was.

I know, right! When he moves, he's still on the ground, yeah? vision_in_stone July 28 2010, 18:12:37 UTC
Oh, swords. She frowned, then swung both arms at the ground, using a wave of it to propel herself backwards so she'd have more time to react to whatever he was going to do.

"Whatever, man."

generally! I'll specify in the tag if he starts leapin' around. :3 violentsoftie July 29 2010, 15:06:26 UTC
"Enough talk. Let's go."

With that, he rushed toward her with his first strike, a blow aimed at her torso. He would reach her in a matter of seconds.

yay! She's gonna get her butt kicked, though. Close quarters combat is bad for her. Needs training! vision_in_stone July 29 2010, 18:05:33 UTC
Well, that suited her just fine.

As was her way, she waited until the last possible moment to react, a foot sliding forward causing the ground under the demon to slide sideways under his pounding feet. It was followed by spray of small rocks to pelt him hard and fast.

Fortunately, Hiei was quick enough to leap before the movement of the ground affected more than his momentum, and the rocks he allowed to hit where they would. The small wounds were worth the price of getting in close like he wanted to. Though Toph's machinations slowed him down, he kept coming, using his (admittedly slightly lessened) momentum to carry him in a lunge toward her.

Dang, he was faster than Sokka. Way faster.

She scowled and changed tactics, slamming a foot into the ground then sweeping her arms toward him, 'bending three simultaneous ridges of rock about six feet high in a spray formation directly at him.

Without waiting to "see" how he reacted, she stamped again, raising a nice tall column with her on top.
