Its vermilion (red) and sandalwood or tumeric (yellow) put there by devotees like a "puja" blessing. The statues are also dark colored because they have been "washed" with milk and ghee. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puja
ah. i thought it might be put there but i had no idea what it would be that would be such amazing perfect color. i have always enjoyed being able to see statues like this in museums but it's horrible that those statues are being deprived of their milk and ghee baths. Now I want a milk and ghee bath!

Yes its at Belur. This was on a wall in one of the long "hallways" in the temple complex. Its really a wonderful place. I have no Idea who it is, s it padmavatidevi? not sure! Belur is very near Sravanbelgola, have you had a chance to see those places? We were going to visit Sravanbelgola but right at that time the BIG festival was happening there, so we decided to take a pass this time.

Belur is very near Sravanbelgola, have you had a chance to see those places? We were going to visit Sravanbelgola but right at that time the BIG festival was happening there, so we decided to take a pass this time.
