Last night myself and a couple other folks met with a group of pastors (well, 3) at a church in north Seattle to talk about how the church can have a more "pastoral" response to gay folks. Why is homosexuality getting such special attention from them when so many other sins in our daily lives are thought of as laughable by today's standards? Do they have an explanation for mixing fabrics and eating shrimp?

Well, the argument is that those were OT laws that didn't carry over into the NT while the prohibition against homosexuality did. Regardless, there are loopholes for everything. Even when we address the passages in the NT, we have to go back to Genesis. It's like a loop.

Well, at least not everyone, and not even all pastors, believe the Bible condemns homosexual expression. Many people believe that the verses interpreted as condemning homosexual expression are simply mistranslated or misunderstood, either accidentally or deliberately. Interestingly, the same freedom to interpret the Bible to support a conservative view is often denied to us, the "other" side; our interpretation of the same scripture is somehow less valid than theirs, by their thinking ( ... )

I've been asked to take part in several discussins of the kind you're describing over the years. Ever since my ridiculous experience as a member of this quasi-hipster cesspool of vapid fundagelical "relevance" church, my answer as always been a resounding, "Sorry, my time would be better spent teaching my cats to speak Norwegian." I often wonder why you put yourself into this position repeatedly, knowing that 1) you're exhausting yourself and 2) any change you effect will be minimal at best ( ... )
