Digestion: Do You Really Know?

May 17, 2010 12:18

Our digestive system plays a really big part in our health. It is said that if you are not happy it could be that you are having a digestive problem. This may not be true for everyone but it makes perfect sense. Our digestive system is made of about seven different organs that help break down and absorb food. If our digestive system is not ( Read more... )

That is one of the many reasons I gave up meat and dairy, I dont want it lingering in my digestive tract gumming up the works and decaying.

I agree about the meat! (Dairy's been harder to kick, personally.)

Did you know that anyone--anyone--can make claims about nutrition (including the digestive system) and even sell products using lies or half-truths without legal repercussions? That's why you have to be very careful about what you read and hear on the internet and other media. If they cannot back up their statements with valid scientific research or reliable expert sources, they should not be trusted. In fact, during my correspondence with the chiropractor "Dr. Joe" the past few days, it is clear he is not a reliable expert in nutrition because he cannot direct me to any reliable sources of information to my most pressing questions.

So now I will ask you, can you tell me how you know that digestive problems can be responsible for those things you listed?

You know what? I stated my first sentence inaccurately. What I meant was anyone except Registered or Licensed Dietitians can practice nutrition without legal repercussions. You see, if a RD/LD is caught lying about nutrition in their practice, they can lose their registration and/or license and even go to prison. But the government does not regulate other "nutritionists," who can misinform consumers in order to sell their products and services. They are not required to maintain current, evidence-based knowledge of nutrition like RDs and LDs ( ... )

I agree with you that the internet is full of lies and half truths from people who are trying to make a quick buck. But it was not my intention to state facts. I am only expressing my opinions based on my own experiences because I know I am not the only one who has digestive health problems. I truly believe that our digestive system is where all good and bad things start. And I don't want to put anything bad into my system.

To answer your question, I cannot give you any reliable sources of information. I am learning as I go. If you have any type of information that can help us all understand these symptoms better, please let us know. After all, we are here to find answers, are we not?

I agree with you, based on my experience with my own body and being vegan I would have to say that I experience far less of the symptoms you listed. I took basic nutrition to become a PT and I will be taking several more nutrition classes in the fall for my exercise physiology degree but in the end it is about how I feel. You eat like crap you feel like crap.
