hell is other people- aka sociology

OMFG. My essay that’s due next Monday? Is more complicated than I imagined.
STEP 1:
To begin, you need to choose a topic that interests you. Your choices are:
1. Biometric surveillance
2. The use of CCTV cameras
3. Online identity-related crime
STEP 2:
After choosing a topic from the list above, you must find a ‘real life’ incident related to your ( Read more... )

real life is meh, uni

well tbh I think that online identity-related crime would be an interesting one to explore, because the other two are just......... i don't even know. and this topic is extremely relevant in the world we live in today, and I'm very sure that you can find articles on it (especially since you are allowed to go international).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Identity_theft has a lot on online id theft so you can start there, perhaps ;3

I think I'll be going with that, it's slightly relevant to fandom in a tangential way, given we're online, and online crime...yeah, tenuous, but if it gets me interested, I'll try to psych myself up that way!

Thanks for the encouragement, bb, I felt daunted by the scope of the assignment- not having a set topic threw me; I'm used to having specifics, details, people to research, etc. so having it left up to us to choose is scary (our choice of event is worth 10% alone!) and the open-endedness is just eeeek! But you've reassured me I should be able to find something- and yay, bonus link! That's awesome, bb, thank you! *tacklehugs*

Dude, you are NOT going to believe what I just read after logging onto Uni... MY ESSAY SUBMISSION DATE HAS BEEN EXTENDED A WEEK! *flails* Your good luck must have rubbed off on me! Cannot freaking believe it!

As for your assignment... When is it due? I can ask around work (I work in security lol) and see what people come up with. How flexible is that "has to be from 2010" thing? Because you could use the Playstation screw up (identify theft) which has been widely documented but that's been in the last two weeks...

*twirls and laughs* I am SO relieved I can't even comprehend my good fortune! Take all the credit you want chica, because I'm givin git to you! *squishes tightly*

Check out this article. I think from there you should be able to goole a few keywords. Also check out Sony's site for any press releases as well. I know thye had some fairly large articles in the the Canadian newspapers I read so I would assume something similar to be in The Australian or The Daily Telegraph. Hope that helps you somewhat :) Although I'm not sure if anyone's identity WAS stolen, just that they were hacked...

Honestly, the universe is being too good to us! What are the chances? ^_^ Maybe it's an incentive, try to motivate us to procrastine less in future...? Fate teaching moral lessons, lol.

I appreciate all the tips! I haven't properly looked at...eek, well, anything to do with this unit past the first couple weeks, but since the case is only a small component, I don't think it has to be anything too involved, just a taste of what the topic is about. So even if nobody used theier identities, I think the fact that security was compromised and their personal info stolen is enough.

But if you hear anything at work up til Friday, I'll be happy to hear it! I was bouncy over 10% until I realized- hang on, they're not going to just GIVE it to us, it means they'll be more strict and judge-y.

Although I'm confused- it says:
Do not spend the majority of your essay explaining or introducing your case study. ***WRITE NO MORE THAN ONE PARAGRAPH to outline the case and its relevance to your research report ( ... )

If I were you, I would go with the online identity theft option. Even if it isn't even vaguely related to fandom, the interwebs is our prime medium of communicatoin and squee-age, and so finding how people are made vulnerable about it is thus rendered interesting.

It is also a related vaguely to how we protect our identities - things like real name, date of birth, where we live - to protect against identity theft. And stalking, but that is another can of worms.

And, it shouldn't be hard to find articles related if you just google it. There should be lots out there. :)

That seems to be the consensus thus far. IDK, I let my tv-related brain get the better of me, I find assault and murder much more interesting (originally, before I realized we were confined to these topics, I was going to do my report on cyber-bullying, focusing on one girl who committed suicide as a result, but yeah, that's obv not applicable) so these white-collar things were just meh ( ... )

Hey yeah - I remember offering. :D

I'll be able to beta if it is around 5k words give or take a thousand (upwards, that is!). I can't do more than that because I'll actually be away for some of June/July - but yes. I'll PM you with my email address. Send me an email from yours and we'll chat from there about how to make this as painless as possible LOL! Don't be intimidated.

And zomgosh yes! Can't wait for prompts. :)

I actually did try, but my prob was that I was leaping into a situation which required them to be on friendly terms and I couldn't make it work without backstory explaining how they got to that point. *eyeroll* So...it's not abandoned, but on the back-burner for now.

I kind of really want whoever's prompt it was that said 'finish off a fic you've started', because GOD, that'd be so much easier. But...IDK, I'm nervous enough to want a cop-out, but also excited enough to want something to challenge me. *facepalm* Contradiction, thy name is Annie!

God, I don't think I'd get to 5k, but I appreciate it, thanks so much! And of course, if it takes me too long and you're away, that'll be on me. Don't expect you to work on vacation! (or...work while working, if it's business-related)

:D I'm feeling a lot more optimistic now I know I have you! *dances*

Sociology was one of my majors in college, with a concentration in Criminal Justice. I really wish I could help but I'm gonna make myself feel really old now and tell you I graduated from college a decade ago. But I loved sociology! The study of individual behavior within the confines of a group fascinated me. I know the psych majors were more glamorous....sociology was really treated like the ugly cousin...but I loved it so much. I hope you do well on your papers coming up. I think its so awesome that you knuckled down and did some research. I often use the shiny of the internet as reward to make myself do more work in the office.

Oops, I had a feeling someone had done Soc (turns out two or three people have on my flist, lol). No offense! It's just really haaaaard and I'm freaking out 'coz of extremely close due dates and if I'd bother to pay attention earlier on, I'm sure I'd have a great deal more interest in it. But silly me, waiting til the last moment and then panicking...not appreciating it so much!

Lol, I appreciate the thought, but it's okay, your support is enough for me. I don't expect you to be able to explain these Soc concepts to me when it was that long ago! Heck, I studied this three years ago and I can't remember any of it!

I'm impressed by myself- this may not sound like a lot to other people who are used to working, but I did 17 hours of work (not googling, but actually reading and writing) over three days. That's like what I used to do back in high school!!

I managed to get the first essay done- now am flailing over the second. ARGH. I'll be so relieved once Tuesday gets here and this essay madness is over.... *quivers anxiously*

It is behind me now and I will not think about it til we get our marks back. *wibbles* I need at least 50% in order to be able to pass this course. OH, PLEASE, GOD. *prays*

LOL, no gifs, no pics, just my own amazing wit. :P IDEK what she saw that was worthy of such praise (I read it over trying to work out what she thought was funny but saw nothing) but yay!

I still feel bad that I've let her down with my craptacular essay. *eyeroll* I appreciate the cheer-up effort, though. I just- I look on the downside in the hopes that the outcome won't be as bad as I expected.

It's that thing where birds fly into closed windows, amiright?

Because the window is symbolic of... not!window. Dude I should be a sociologistTHAT MAKES AS MUCH SENSE AS ANYTHING I'VE STUDIED ( ... )
