Alias 5.14, 5.15, 5.16, 5.17

Ah so it's "I See Dead People" where Vaughn's location was suddenly switched to Nepal from Bhutan. I thought I had missed it! I can tell that they're really not caring that much anymore and frankly, it made it hard for me to care too much about these final four episodes. I like Sloane playing games with Fred to bring Sark into the mix. Hell, I ( Read more... )

Yeah, there were a lot of ridiculous elements in the season finale - but I'm glad I went back and watched it.

I think Syd & Vaughn definitely deserve to live happily ever after on a beach with their adorable children. One of whom is a superspy in the making, of course, but oh well. :)

So had you been following along with things enough that when you came back for the end you knew Vaughn was alive? Or did that take you completely by surprise?

Oh, I totally knew he was alive. I don't remember how I knew, though - maybe from reading recaplets on TWoP?

I basically just turned off my brain to watch the finale, because I knew it would be OTT ridiculous. I'm definitely glad I watched it, though. Glad SpyDaddy was awesome, glad Sydney, Vaughn, and their SuperSpy children are living happily ever after in the tropics.

Yeah, completely OTT ridiculous. Still, good fun!

Yeah, your thoughts on the finale were pretty close to mine. When I first watched "Reprisal" I was surprised by how good it actually was. (Aside from, yeah, the incredibly bad Mount Subasio effects. Remember when I mentioned that ABC apparently yoinked the entire budget right on the finale? This is what I was talking about. So. Bad.) But then with "All the Time in the World", it just fell apart. The flashbacks were good, and they pulled off the Jack and Sloane plot decently enough, but the rest of it... meh. It was very obvious that they had no idea what to do with Rambaldi's endgame, and the nukes were blatantly shoehorned in there just because they needed a Big Global Threat.

But still, I didn't think it was so awful it overshadowed the rest of the show, anyway. It was just kind of dumb and exasperating and a bit of a shame to go out on after they ended s4 so much better.

Now that you're all caught up, I can point you at the rewatch over at the_retelling, where we're actually watching the end of season five right now. Well, when I ( ... )

I did remember you mentioning the crap effects! So. Effing. Bad.

The machine-gunning of The Twelve was badass and awesome but really served to diminish their entire quest to stop them all season. The same way that the unexpected takedown of SD-6 suddenly mitigated their scariness by proving they were such an easily defeated enemy, you know? And yet I didn't notice it at the time because you're right, it didn't overshadow and they were off and running to the next thing, in this case the Dr. Evil nukes plan. Sheesh.

Ooh, I'll check out your rewatch. Should be fun to see some episode comments since the TWoP thread is currently doing Greatest Moments and I don't know the series well enough (and haven't had long enough to digest it all) to play along.

Okay, here is where I out myself as an ignoramous and possibly a racist, but I just thought that Bhutan was a town or a province in Nepal and had not one problem with any of that. Oh well...

Your familiarity with Auntie Mame has raised you immeasurably in my eyes.

While it is true that the Alias finale was a lot like Little Gloria's parents' place in the country--in that it had its ups and downs (Upson Downs! See what I did there? Okay, I'll stop now.) I'm slightly glad that it was kind of mediocre because, as much as I loved it, I was ready to quit the show and a fabulous ending would have hurt too much.

Sure have enjoyed your posts! What's next?

HA! Bhutan and Nepal are neighbors (or nearly so, there's a smidgeon of India sticking up between them) so it's not like they're on opposite sides of the globe or anything. It's just We-Todd-Ed that the effing writers didn't remember!

You know the movie "Trading Places" has an Auntie Mame reference in it, right? When Louis comes back to his club after the night in jail he comes up to his so-called friends and one of the girls is in the middle of a story, "...and she stepped on the ping pong ball!" Using that horrible clenched teeth Top Drawer accent and everything. It's awesome.

Man I love that movie. I wanted to BE Auntie Mame when I grew up. I love her so much.

What's next? I've been thinking about that. Possibly Rome or Deadwood since they're both short. But I'm taking recommendations and am open to being lobbied and convinced! :)

So this is my theory on Jack: he's totally not dead. The Rambaldi goo splashed on him when he threw the bomb and the explosion threw him free of Sloane's cave. He was hiding in the back of Syd's house at the end because he wants to enjoy his grandchildren and not go back to spying.

I wish the writers had written to their budget but I do blame ABC for the ridiculous effects at the end.

I'll have to look over my dvd collection for recommendations but I think you've hit the big stuff I recommend. You could always catch up on Trek.

Ooh I like it. There was a strange hesitation when Sydney told Dixon her son's named Jack. Clearly it was because of Grandpa hiding out in the back room!

I'd love to catch up on Trek but I'm watching them with Chris and he's gone most nights. It makes it easy to keep up on shows I have to watch via alternate means since they're on when the kids are up though. I sent Wonderfalls back with your other DVDs. I just couldn't bring myself to try it. Maybe that's unfair but there you go. *shrug*
