The book had the potential to be something really good; but there was so much gleeful sexism that it left me disgusted and regretting that I paid money for it. -
The Shining by Stephen King (p. 448)
I enjoyed the book immeasurably more because I saw the movie first. It's been more than 10 years, possibly closer to 20 years since I saw "The Shining". The Invisible Man by H. G. Wells (p. 110)
The first third of this book took me by surprise by being extremely funny.[SPOILERS] After that the Invisible Man tries to turn a tramp in to an unwilling minion. Things get darker and darker from there, but there are still funny bits.I always thought that being invisible was what drove the Invisible Man insane. My Man Jeeves by P. G. Wodehouse (p. 152)
I read a public domain version of this title.I was expecting it to all be about Jeeves and Wooster, but there was a cluster of stories told from the perspective of Reggie Pepper. I genuinely enjoyed most of the short stories in this collection. Most of them have the feel of cheerful black and white romantic comedies.One story told from the perspective of a mut had me wanting to run out and buy a dog.The only exception was "Black for Luck", a story that left me fuming and disgusted ( Read more... ) -
The Terrible Girls by Rebecca Brown p. 136
The book reads like a nightmare built around rejected and betrayed love. Like a nightmare, the settings sometimes change, but it seems to be a continuous interrelated story rather than distinct stories. Among other things, the pretty, brown-eyed beloved/betrayer remains the same.
