What's a shiny hunter?

Someone who, in a canon setting, wants only gold or bronze dragons, which are the "highest ranked" ones.

In non-canon weyrs, it's also a dragon who isn't green, blue, or brown, which are typically thought of as "boring" or "fodder to kill off for Drama".

Which is really sad, coz I love my prospective green and blue :

I really don't have anything against Greens. It's just I can't play them anymore. They were totally ruined for me, which sucks. Instead of being something interesting, they were used as a punishment tool. =(

Aren't you the chick who dropped the site after your first candidate didn't get a gold? But instead got a lovely little pink?

I'm sorry, but your first candidate and you state you want a clutcher? I doubt that is going to happen. It comes off as a huuuge red flag for a Hide Hunter.

Since I don't have an edit, I do remember you! You were the chick who got delightful little Eoth! You're the second chick from here:

I thought the pink dragon thing sounded familiar.

To be honest, I was not at all expecting her to impress at that clutch. I hadn't even been aware of the fact that there was a clutch until after I joined. I had only read the main info and thought it was interesting.

But yes, I made my character a Queen candidate. I wanted to see if I could earn the position or the dragon through RP and dedication. I honestly would of been fine if she had just been left standing and aged out. But I felt as if I wasn't even given a chance to do anything on the site. Basically, I felt like I was given fodder just to hush me, like I was expecting a dragon at a hatching after just joining and they wanted to quiet me.

That's how I felt at least.

@ the character with phobia of a color of dragon thing. I personally would love being able to play out the character learning to overcome his/her phobia to bond with the dragon, and I can see the admins thinking the same thing. I dunno about the other parts, but YMMV on that?

I don't really know how to explain it, but I was never really comfortable playing the pair. I went back to it to _try_ when they were having a hatching because I liked the plot surrounding the hatching, but it never really felt right.

Yeah, if a character doesn't click, then it doesn't click.

While I could totally see that being an interesting point of character development to play out, I fail to see how it would actually happen. If dragonets touch candidates' minds to find their best fit, they'd discover that Impressing to them would hurt the candidate, and I honestly do not see how that would come off as a good fit even to a pretty naive newborn psychic reptile. For that reason alone I'd probably never allow such an Impression at my Weyr, and if something came close to it, the player would probably be contacted beforehand.

Hell, I was apprehensive about (cross)Impressing a bronze to a female-gendered, biologically male character, because I realized it could be read, IC as well as OOC, as the dragon confirming her biological sex - so we ended up sticking in an OOC note specifically stating that he considered himself having Impressed to a girl.

You didn't state you didn't want that color on your candidate sheet. It's clearly stated in the rules that if you don't want a color, you need to say as much. And, as has been made clear to you more than once 'my character has a phobia' is not a statement of not wanting a color ( ... )

Actually, one of the admins from the site that you are referring to told me point blank that if that dragon went between that my candidate wouldn't be allowed to stand again. It was never mentioned to me that she would be allowed to have a stands impression. The admin said and I quote "Leader Character would not allow her to stand again," with no mention of any other potential standings of a sort.

I also don't dig for golds or gold analogs. I was also complaining about 'low rankers' due to the fact that I had been dished out an extremely bad experience with a Weyr where all they gave my characters were low ranked dragons. Generally, I have no issue with that. Except in this instance it was about favoritism. I was given no opportunity to grow at all. Low ranks were used as a punishment tool for those members who admins saw as extra bodies or weren't their friends.

For the record, I was not expecting Iiateth to impress my character either.

At the time, I was spelling out the IC consequences for your characters IC actions. I'm sorry I didn't make it more clear to you that more than one road leads to Rome.

And you do want golds. Cite trauma all you like, but there you go. The first thing you did upon arriving at our site was ask for a gold firelizard. Which was fine, because we were giving them away like candy.

But the second thing you did was say that they shouldn't be available to anyone else. Which is not fine, because candy is meant to be shared.

Oh, and if that 'super sparkly purple' comment is also a dig at our site? Purples are like rats on Wardens. They're as common as greens, but they eat too much and get too big. No one got one because they were special, the multiple people who got them (not just the lord holder's daughter) go them because there were lots of them to get.

If you're complaining about another sparkly purple, than I shall leave that to the Weyr in question to address.

milunesta November 4 2011, 13:45:51 UTC
Well then the whole mess on Wardens was just a huge ass misunderstanding due to miscommunication. My whole issue was that I felt that the dragon did not fit the candidate, but I wasn't given an option. I felt as if I had no choice but to play the dragon.

I am sorry, but I do not remember stating the comment where gold firelizards should not be allowed to go to anybody else. However when I asked about the 'lizards I was polite about it, understanding if the application I put in for it would be rejected. While golds might be nice to play with, I do enjoy diversity. I'll state it again, I'm not a shiny hunter.

And no, the purple comment wasn't about Wardens, but another Weyr.

You know, if I knew nothing about you but this rant, I don't think I'd be thrilled to have you join my game. You're not exactly putting your best foot forward. (Full disclaimer - I don't know anything about you but this and the pink dragon incident. I've never played at a game with you, I've never played at any game where you've ever been.)

To address your points, some Pern games have been cliquey for decades. Good ones aren't. Nothing has changed. Plus, no one can ever agree on what 'cliquey and playing favorites' looks like. I find frequently that people who complain about it really mean 'someone else got what I wanted and it's not fair because I wanted it'. Not always, but frequently. I also conclude that anyone who goes 'back in the [x] days, it wasn't like this' is either incredibly naive, disingenuous or the object of favoritism themselves.

Second, you are coming off as a shiny-hunter. 'I don't like greens they've been ruined for me' would say to me as an admin 'I want special dragons and I'll pout if I don't get it'. (Or it ( ... )
