Is a different martial art a possibility? Aikido is among the more strenuous variants.

To be honest I don't think any kind of jumping around, throwing, punching, kicking etc is a good idea whilst I have this injury.

That and I very much like the whole idea behind Aikido.

Aikido is pretty mellow compared to Tae Kwon Do or karate. You might also find Tai Chi good (and it does have combat applications, if that floats your boat).

As to getting to know people in Fleet (and you'll not thank me for saying this) the way to meet people is to go meet people. If you become a 'regular' at the 'local' and chat to the bar staff initially, you will meet some folks. And it's the bar staff's job to be passingly pleasant.

I'm in the UK remember, good old NHS.

Yes, I suspect there's something like that in there, although I'll likely get to see a physiotherapist as first stop, I hope. We'll find out when I actually make and get to an appointment.
