We saw Dread (Anthony DiBlasi) last night, the newish movie based on the Clive Barker story. I liked it. Kyla remembers the original much better than I do, and reckons they took away the point. The Disappearance of Alice Creed: well made and interesting, but Alice herself gets most of the dodgy moments of plot, which undermines what they were attempting.

We saw Lake Mungo on the weekend. It's an interesting flick, but never really develops beyond that. It sort of shows what would happen if Twin Peaks was visited by Australian Story rather than the FBI. We have a young, dead girl (a Palmer no less), along with hidden secrets and ghosts, and the story is revealed gradually in interviews to camera, ( Read more... )

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the book, had its ups and downs (mostly the former), but it had me at the initial quotation, which was beautiful and perfect. There was a little of that in the movie, when Nick Cave turns up on the radio. I'm not quite sure it is as fitting (it's a strange song), but is beautiful nonetheless ( Read more... )
