pretty much most of everything done in IY- system & network setup/config/maint/upgrades, scripting and programming- whatever needs doing, he does well, which has been a detriment in his local job hunts. Local companies have wanted people insanely specialized in very specific roles, which was not the case back in CA...

Sorry to hear that. I've now been with my company long enough (9 years) that if I got canned, it would be the shits trying to get back to where I am now. 4 weeks of vacation now, and all. At least you're off the radar for awhile.
