5. The passage where Eragon kills and cooks the rabbits, then decides not to eat them, was the preachiest thing I've read since a certain author I will not name. I'm a vegetarian, and that made me sick.
Spoiler warning, just in case you still mind spoilers for this book series.
Eragon changes his mind in the third book, so in the fourth book we get this:
As Eragon bit into a slab of roast pork belly, Saphira asked, Is it good? Is it scrumptious?
"Mmm," said Eragon, rivulets of juice running down his chin.
Well, those are pretty muchos the standard reactions upon reading the brick. (I personally did not found the hairless groin weird un any way until i was pointed out the subtext. I am very bad at those things, for me it was just description)
And "spoiler" warning. You probably will still like Orik by the end of the series. He might be the only carácter who does not get derailed, is pretty proactive and dotes not try to be preachy and perfect in tour face. He is justo bland. Which is a pretty good compliment for a carácter un this series
Actually it isnt that weird of a reaction, roran is from a medieval type of village and there he pribs never heard of or saw a human with a different skincolour, so seeing one for the first time it isnt that weird. Secondly elves were myths in their world so seeing a creature(couldnr Find a better word) he already knew of and could imagine iTS looks. Makes it less weird.
I'd give it a bit of a pass, actually. On Lewis and Clark's expedition, Clark brought along his black slave, York, and there is a story of a Mandan (Native American) chief trying to rub York's black off, as he was the first black person they'd ever encountered. So there is historical basis for this.
The dyed skin thing is another place where Paolini's inability to understand racism shows through. He himself doesn't know enough to write a convincing (and probably mixed) reaction by a human at seeing a different kind of human for the first time. M
All I can think is at least we weren't in Roran's head for that scene. The description of Ajihad was bad enough. Seriously.

Just wondering, because it seems like mentioning skin-colour at all is a bad idea and gets sucked into accusations of racism etc.
