Wherein Naphy Somehow Ties Fandom to Howler Monkeys, Underwear, and Celery

-Waves an initial hello to the talented Big Name Fans on her F-list, none of the following of which applies to them-

There are many, many rants and instructional essays on how to make friends with BNFs/become a BNF/survive being a BNF/tell if you are a BNF/Cassie Claire.

But what if, like me, you're too lazy indifferent bunny-enslaved 'cautious' ( Read more... )

Loved these little rules, and I think I'm pretty true to most of them, except the joining or modding communities one. Ugh... I uh, do get caught up in the modliness...although I'd like to think I'm a laid back mod ( ... )

I keep getting interrupted by actual work :P

A lot of the rules were me making fun of my own laziness, but, strangely, they do seem to apply a lot of the time for remaining 'obscure'. I actually love reading fanfic communities- everybody's just so bloody talented though that it's hard to hide that light under a bushel :)

I absolutely LOVE writing pairings that brings on hate mail or writing about characters that has hardly any screen time (Mrs. Higurashi has been a good character to play with), and I absolutely ADORE genfic. You and me both! Looking back over my masterlist, I was shocked to see that at least a quarter of all my Inuyasha stories featured Midoriko or Mama Higurashi. Although I knew I had much love for them, I hadn't realized how often they inspired me :) As for the hate mail pairings... I guess I've been pretty lucky because a) Most of the time, even if people disagree with the pairing, I haven't gotten hatemail for it and b) The Gollum/Dobby/Jar Jar fic is not publically available. I love genfic and it always seem to ( ... )

I'd LOVE to see your essay on how to do crossovers! I won't lynch you, I promise!

While I'm still a little nervous about the posting of a crossover essay, I do have an alternate pairing flow chart that might tide you over in the meantime here. -Looks around nervously for sudden appearance of rope-

And minions are not nearly as fun electronically as they are in person.

Haha! So hilarious, so true.

-Grins- Glad you enjoyed it! I really need more real-life minions. Particularly Jaken-like real-life minions ;)

I would just add one more thing to your list and that is: Don't talk to people. No, seriously, don't talk to other fans. If you friend a whole bunch of people and never comment and just post fic in your own little journal, then you are golden. I speak with the voice of experience. I have even gotten to the point where comments like this don't threaten my SNF status, because I am that entrenched in small name fandom. SNF=the way to be. Don't talk to people, write gen/odd pairings/non-romancy sorts of things, and don't promote your fic/vid/whatever and you will never be worshipped. It's worked for me!

Technically to cement my position as an SNF I should not reply to your comment. Unfortunately for me, I'm too lazy to care. I suspect that it is this laziness that is preventing me from true SNF-dom that heroes like you have achieved, although I am really giving it my apathetic best ;)

A delight to hear from you- thanks for your addition to the list!

How about "Write only for fandoms that have passed both their Golden and Silver Age, and moved solidly on to the Bronze?" Ancient, established fandoms filled with the detritus of the Good Old Days, where the BNFs are long-gone and immortal, are perfect because there's no one left to care about a new writer's work. It's been working beautifully for me...

Oo! I've been looking for fandoms like these, but everytime I find one they suffer an unexpected resurgence. I swear I'm cursed... So -pretends to be nonchalant while inspecting her nails slyly glancing to the side- what fandom did you find?

I've been writing Sailormoon since I started seriously writing fanfic, but by then the boat of BNFdom had long since sailed and the fandom was well into its decline. There's still a somewhat steady influx of garbage on the Pit, but that's almost completely separate from the core of the remaining fandom. The quality writers now are pretty much down to a little group of us who all know each other. It's kind of eerie living in a dying ghost town that was once a bustling metropolis ( ... )

You know, I'd completely forgotten about Sailormoon, which is one of the few fandoms that could actually apply to. I've tried my hand at a few television fandoms which I figured were past their prime, but everytime I stick my head in they seem to suffer a massive resurgence (I'm sure the two events are completely coincidental, but it's still a bit unnerving ;).

We don't have to put pairing labels in our summaries, nobody pitches a fit if we use fangirl Japanese, and when we have drama, it's beneath the notice of fandom_wankThat's pretty much my idea of fandom bliss. Although I have to say that come of the larger fandoms I've been in have been pretty tolerant of my lack of pairing labels in summaries. I'm also the only alt-pairing writer I know who *hasn't* received hatemail strictly because of the alt-pairing, so maybe I've just lucked out ( ... )

If you want to provide yourself with laughes for years afterwards: found a ship in the Harry Potter fandom. And then run away!
Okay, HP fandom being what it is, I'm probably not the first person to think that there should be a Marcus/Katie ship. But I think it genuinely counts for something that I founded the SCUSA thread at FictionAlley. I still see no evidence that anyone actually *did* much with M/K before that. And then someone else really took to it, and that attracted more followers, and at that point in my life I was drifting out of the HP fandom, so I pretty much left them to continue without me.
These days I think Marcus/Katie is one of the most popular het pairings for both characters, and I think several people have been suggested as its inventor, which always cracks me up.
Still a small name fan, currently operating in the Star Wars fandom, and quite content with my fandom life.

*You're* responsible for Marcus/Katie? -Applauds- It's funny, but I was actually thinking of a similar Harry Potter situation when I wrote the Blaise Zabini corollary, particularly since I'm sure his early adopters have pretty much all disappeared from fandom after he became a freakishly popular character, well before HBP.

Any grand plans for the Star Wars fandom or do you plan on quietly resting in happy obscurity?

I was delighted to hear such a heart-warming SNF testimonial. -Pumps fist- Power to the celery!

Hmmmm, I thought Cassie Claire was responsible for the Blaise blaze.
For Star Wars? I'd really settle for getting a little for attention for my handmaiden epic. Of course, that require me to write more of it, so...

-Blushes- Silly me, I was thinking of the *male*Blaise phenom, before Rowling confirmed his sex. I hadn't read far enough in Cassie Claire to come across her Blaise (female I assume?), but I remember PtQ popularizing female Blaise. Male Blaise was weird because a bunch of basic unknowns were playing with him and suddenly he became overwhelmingly popular. And Italian. Er... sorry for my rambling- I thought it was fascinating to watch :)

Hee. I need to finish my epic too. I am one of those rare SNFs who has a massive unfinished story. Although considering that story is the closest I've come to recognition, I may have proved my own point.
