modern hippies fail at hippiedom, exhibit 37

Aug 29, 2023 20:19

I read the news every day. Any given day in my life you can be sure of two things. I will drink coffee and i will read the news. To be honest, i mostly just glance the headlines because that's enough to give me general overview of what is going on in the world, but there are always a couple of articles a day that warrant a clickthrough ( Read more... )

I’m with you for 95%. You can keep the flying cars though, because people will inevitably crash them and rain debris onto innocent people walking below. And new tech would be fine if we could figure out how to get critical minerals without destroying the land and the communities where it is found. Right now, things like ethical lithium and cobalt are even more of a fantasy than ethical oil.

A couple of friends went to Burning Man a few years ago. They said they had fun, but I just didn’t get the appeal. It sounded so wasteful and trashy.

In reality i think the only way flying cars would work in a city-like environment is if they weren't human-controlled at all. Although in a vertically-dense city you could probably just as easily bind the vehicle to cables or rails, there's no need for untethered flight. I guess the most sensible use case of a "flying car" is as a personal shuttle that could take you into orbit faster than a space elevator, but then why not do it more efficiently as mass transit ( ... )

You're 100% right... burning man was over by the time the Enron-styled tech geeks started discovering it and it went from a huge avant art party to a place for rich people to be "seen" as cool/hip/different just by attending ( ... )

I know people who still go to Burning Man, too... most of them are there for the party, and enjoy the art, and some are there for the art and enjoy the party ( ... )

That long ass tirade was just me having a morning... but now I read your article!

"“They’re delusional, it’s idiocy,” fumed Molly, a festival attendee. “They think they’re going to fix climate change by blocking Burning Man? I don’t care what their argument is, they can go fuck themselves.”"

"“I think protest is very important, but destroying and inconveniencing people doesn’t do anything,” said a man named Will Semmbs, who was on the way to the festival. “I have solar panels on my RV,” he noted. “The protesters drove here in gas-powered cars. They’re literally making the climate worse.”"

Wow.... those people sure are bummed about their party... but good to know they can PROVE they care about the planet, with their tone of righteous indignation even if it is *slightly undercut* by their impatience with the conversation at hand! Ha!

I know right? It's so hilarious to me that such proudly indignant people see themselves as the truly righteous ones. Like, if you are such a highly developed soul, have a little humility about it, have a sense of humor. The dude abides.

I wonder if these events are different in the EU. I picture the stressed Americans going, "I only have 5 days of vacation a year! I'm, BLOWING IT ALL ON BURNING MAAAAAAAAN!" and then of course all that shit is so stressful that they can't even join the collective when they get there because they're so rigid about having SO MANY NEEDS because anxiety/time/money/stuff, ya know.. Americanism.

I've pondered this a lot, and to be fair i've never been to a festival in the US so i can't compare directly. I have been in Canada and Australia, though, and i think those countries share a lot more in common with the US culturally than Europe, at least festival-wise ( ... )

I think all humans are hypocrites, and because America is the wealthiest country, we are the worst of the bunch. Bottom line: The solution to our planet's problems requires more than superficial changes. It requires making dramatic lifestyle choices, most of which we're unwilling to make. Pretty much everything we do destroys our resources and hurts our planet. The small things we do that we "brag" about are just icing and mean little. I sound cynical and hopeless, but I don't see a solution. I see us all dying, holding tight to our lifestyles. And I'm under no illusions and know I'm part of the problem.

And - you mention those isolated and impractical communities? Welcome to Hilton Head, the home of these gated and impractical communities. The idea WAS to separate where people live from amenities -- i.e. -- commerce centers. So - of course, you require a car. And this is where I live for half the year.

Even though i am not really a militant anti-capitalist, i do sometimes get the point of anti-capitalist environmentalists when they point out exactly what you just said - America is the richest country, so of course it's also the country that destroys the most, consumes the most, pollutes the most... Their theory is that it's wealth that is at the root of all the problems, so that's why wealth redistribution has to be the first item on the agenda ( ... )
