"Okay, Dad, this is how it's going to work."

Daniel looked up, startled, to find his daughter standing in the living room doorway. Zoë was already dressed, despite the fact that her date wouldn't arrive for at least fifteen minutes.

She really looked beautiful. Her gown was a deep blue, dotted with crystals that sparkled like stars in the night sky. More gems shone in her hair, gathered in a bun atop her head, and at her ears. It would have been a perfect picture, except for the fact that Zoë had both hands on her hips, glaring at her father.

Daniel attempted to look innocent as he carefully closed his book and focused on her. "How what's going to work, Zoë?" he asked.

He obviously hadn't succeeded, because she continued to glare. Careful not to rumple her dress, she sat on the couch across from his chair.

"Don't play dumb with me, Dad," Zoë warned. "It doesn't work for Uncle Jack, and it's definitely not going to work for you."

Daniel looked at her again and sighed. He'd really been hoping he could avoid this for a few more years. Until she was out of college, at least, or graduate school, since she'd been telling everyone for the last couple of years that she was going to get her PhD.

But, no matter how much he wanted to believe the contrary, his daughter wasn't a child anymore. There was no way to keep her from growing up, not unless he used that device they'd found on- no, Sam would never go for that one.

"All right, Zoë," said Daniel, seriously. "I'm listening."

This was, apparently, the right thing to say, because she smiled. "I know you're just worried about me because you're my dad, and it's your job. But I'm nearly an adult now, and I think I can be trusted to do some things by myself."

"Of course," said Daniel, mostly succeeding in his attempt to sound reasonable.

"Dad," said Zoë, patiently. "I'm not going to have sex with Adam."

"What?" he spluttered. "I didn't say- that's not what I- you promise?"

"Dad," she repeated, even more patiently. "I've been going out with Adam for a couple of months now, and we haven't done anything that can't be shown on network television. Adam is driving tonight, and we're going to go to the prom. We're going to dance, and drink punch and get home somewhere around one in the morning, fully clothed. There is not going to be any drinking, or anything illegal, for that matter. And no sex."

Daniel blinked at her. "All right," he said again. "You're almost an adult, and we should trust you. I was on my own by the time I was your age, and your mother... well, we won't go into what your mother was doing then."

Zoë smiled. "Thanks, Dad," she said, just as the doorbell rang. "Don't wait up, okay?"

They both knew he would, though.

Some things were non-negotiable.
