When the nurse gave him the all-clear, Daniel grabbed his jacket and met up with Cam and Teal'c in the infirmary doorway.

All three men had a collection of white bandages along their arms, concealing the scratches from some surprisingly thorny plants on their last mission. Not for the first time, Daniel wondered if misfortune would befall them every time Sam didn't come with them off-world, and silently dreaded the next four months of her maternity leave.

"Hey," he said. "Where's Vala?"

She should have been ahead of them, since she hadn't fallen into any evil alien thorn bushes. And if the past dozen missions were any indication, she should have been lying in wait for Daniel- she trusted the medical staff, but she liked to 'see for herself' that he was all right.

Cam and Teal'c glanced at each other, but one of the nurses called, "Dr. Jackson?"

He looked up sharply, but she merely smiled and pointed to the curtain around Vala's examination space, then vanished.

"We'll be in the commissary," said Cam.

Daniel found Vala still sitting on the examination table, jacket folded beside her. She had her head down, pigtails partially obscuring her face, twisting her wedding ring with nervous fingers.

"Vala?" he asked softly.

"Daniel," she breathed, as though she was infinitely relieved to see him and completely terrified, both at the same time. "Daniel... I'm pregnant."

There was so much contained in that tiny sentence, which he could hear as clearly as if she'd said it aloud- relief that she wasn't hurt in some way, faint disbelief even as she spoke, and-

Fear, Daniel realized with a start. Fear, that this was just like before, just like Adria. How could he not have thought...? He couldn't imagine what it must have been like for her, alone in another galaxy, carrying a child she knew couldn't be entirely human.

"Vala, this one's ours," he said, drawing her into a gentle hug. "Yours and mine. And you won't be alone this time, I promise. I'll be with you the whole time, for anything you need. When you start having morning sickness, or need your feet rubbed, or want to eat pickles and ice cream at two AM, or need somebody to tell you you're beautiful when you feel like a whale, and that's just before our kid is born-"

She cut him off with a kiss. "I'm being silly, aren't I?"

Daniel shook his head. "Of course not. I think all new parents are allowed a bit of panic."

Vala managed a smile. "What about you?"

"I'll take my turn when the baby is born."

"A baby," she said, the worry in her voice completely replaced by wonder. "Our baby. Daniel, we're going to have a baby."

He grinned, goofily. "Yeah, we are. And you know you're going to have to take yourself off active field duty, right?"

Vala rested a hand on her middle. "It'll be worth it," she said. "More than worth it."
