Houses on Earth were built like nowhere else in the galaxy.

Most other places, there were two kinds- the ones built for shelter and the ones built for extravagance. The first kind were meant to keep the residents relatively warm and dry without any regard for style. The second kind were meant to prove the residents were gods and to be as flashy as possible.

Earth architects had somehow found the perfect middle ground, houses that were both structurally sound and visually pleasing, and Vala had never realized how hard it would be to choose one.

"Vala," said Daniel, moving a stack of newspaper real estate sections from their workbench. "This is getting ridiculous."

She glanced at him over the section she was still reading. "Research, darling," she replied, with her usual dazzling smile. "You always say how important it is to research things."

He rolled his eyes, but not before she'd seen his smile. "And you haven't found a single one you liked yet?"

Vala sighed and folded the page onto the pile with the others. "I'm trying not to be too picky, Daniel, but this is important."

"I know," he replied, "and I have something that might help."

Two hours of driving accomplished what a month of real estate ads hadn't- they found a house.

They called the agent on the 'for sale' sign, who was happy to come and let them take a look inside. Vala was silent as they walked through the house, listening to the woman recite her sales pitch and answer Daniel's odd questions, until they got to the last room, the kitchen.

She looked out the French doors at the slightly-overgrown lawn and said, "We'll take it."

It was just outside Colorado Springs, in a good neighborhood. Four bedrooms, two baths, sitting on three-quarters of an acre and surrounded by trees. The house needed some work, new paint, new carpets, probably an upgrade on the plumbing, but neither of them knew enough about house repairs to know what else it might need.

According to the real estate agent, it was the fastest sale she'd ever had.

Finally, after mountains of paperwork, they were left alone with brand new keys to their completely empty house. They were going to need some furniture.

"Explain to me why we're doing this again?" Cam asked, trying to keep the bookcase he carried with Teal'c level.

Vala frowned. "Possibly because you're our friend?" she suggested.

"Of course I'm your friend," Cam protested. "But why didn't you hire movers or something?"

"Because we're not moving," said Daniel, absently.

"And you couldn't have gotten new stuff delivered?" asked Jack, frowning at the scratched end table he had just set down. "It looks like you got all this stuff at a yard sale."

"We did not," Vala protested. "The shelves are from IKEA."

Sam patted the other woman's shoulder. "How about I order us some pizza?"

And dinner with their family seemed the perfect way to break in a new house.
