I have Thoughts about Black Swan. Yesterday I got angry over a review of the film calling it campy and hysterical, in both senses of hysterical: the review held that the movie was both laughable and overwrought. Watched Mysterious Skin tonight. I was a little bit leery of this movie because Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a teenage hustler, and I felt like I'd be uncomfortable perving on it if it was hot. What, more about Inception? Yes.

I don't intend to become all Inception all the time. To be honest, while I enjoyed it a lot, it wasn't my favorite Nolan film-- I thought Memento and The Prestige were more balanced and successful works. Worth a separate post: Eames in Inception was played by Tom Hardy. He also starred in a film called Bronson. I didn't care for the film itself, which is about a violent, charismatic criminal, but Tom Hardy is amazing in it - almost unrecognizable, not least because Hardy got incredibly ripped for the role of Bronson. I'm relieved to read bad reviews of The Last Airbender; it would've really made me sad if the movie were well-received despite the major casting fail.

Ebert gives it a thoroughly poor notice, and specifically refers to the casting problems. The Chicago Tribune says it's "the latest 3-D offering in theaters, yet barely functional in 2 or even 1." ( Read more... )
