And it's because of something you'd never guess.

It's an advertisement. From TV. For clothes!

I love when stores acknowledge that everyone wants to be cute no matter their size. Here in California, we have a lot of plus size stores but for some reason so many of them pretty much just sell these bland tent like outfits. There's only one store I've seen with genuinely fashionable clothing, this great store called Torrid. Well, I guess lane Bryant has some cute clothes as well.

It's just about the same here. Even in the shop where I got my Zizzi trousers, I find most of the clothes ugly and overpriced. Fortunately for me (I suppose) I don't need to shop there exclusively, so I can pick and choose between the lower plus size sizes (got myself a lovely wool cardigan and a sparkly shirt in one this winter) and upper "regular" sizes (yoga trousers for use on the treadmill - was so surprised about that one cuz fat thighs - and some wayyyy discounted nicer shirts were both found in H&M around the same time).

It's just... really, really, really gratifying to see women that are not stick figures in an ad for clothes - any clothes! I mean, H&M may actually carry my size for some things (which is also gratifying because some shops don't and will give me weird looks for even thinking they might) but they'd never show a woman my size wearing them in their ads!

You know I was just thinking about this topic yesterday because I was trolling you tube looking for vids on my new favorite ship (Jess and nick from new girl) and I ran into some awesome vids on this German/Danish/Swedish (not sure which) show called doctors diary. And the main character was this woman who looked like a woman! She had hips! And a butt! And you never see that in America. Or if you do she's just the best friend who never get the gorgeous doctor guy ( this guy really was gorgeous. I wish I understood the language because the show looked awesome)

IDK if it's Danish. Doesn't sound familiar, though. But have you seen Drop Dead Diva (American)? I only have the first 2 seasons on Netflix so IDK if she gets her love interest or he forever treats her as only a BFF, but it's about this skinny model who dies and then due to shenanigans ends up in the body of a plus size lawyer, working together with the guy she'd been dating before her accident.

I think it treats a lot of body image issues and how plus sized women are treated in today's society with great sensitivity, although it uses the whole "skinny, pretty and kinda stupid/shallow" vs "fat and clever" trope. There's also a beautiful and clever lawyer, I suppose, so there's that. And IDK the name of the plus sized actor who plays the main character, but IMO she's extremely pretty.

The first time I saw that ad I didn't notice it was different from any other company at all. The second time around I did notice it saying "for all sizes" and then remembered the name Zizzy... only the third time (where I was looking for it) did I actually notice that the girls wasn't the same as in any other ads... My mind just saw "cute girl". Note, I saw it on the TV so I was only partly paying attention. Just goes to show that the whole hype about how models _should_ look is just that, an insane idea concocted by the industry, not really "what sells". ...that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it!

I get what you're saying. And, actually, for the same reason, if anyone really reads my LJ any longer, I half expect some skinny person or a man showing up and not at all getting the big deal and scolding me for daring to openly celebrate curves (like the commenter I responded to on the video's youtube page here: http://youtu.be/00PtcyY9338). Because it's easy to not notice the lack of representation when it's not you not represented and you personally only notice "another cute girl". If you even know what I mean?

Oh and it's not for all sizes. Zizzi is only plus size, which means they start around size 42 or 44 and go up. ;) But they say "We looove curves". :)

You're back!! :D I saw you comment on something else and was all YAY! :D

I have nooooo clue about UK TV. I have BBC Entertainment and BBC Lifestyle and BBC... um... Culture? Something? BBC E is good for watching QI and BBC L sometimes has MasterChef and such, but, eh, I don't tend to stick around for the adverts much. XD

I will say, though, that British series tend to have more natural looking women than American series, so there is that! :) Now for fashion to catch up... ;)

It took a while, but yeah, I am back ;) .

And here BBC doesn't really have adverts I think? hmmm, at least not during films, lol.

But yeah, I hear you on the casting. I could rant for hours about American TV show casting, lmao. ;)

:D

Don't they have adverts in between shows/films though? IDK. It's true they don't do during, at least not on BBC E. And that's nice. I prefer those kinds of channels. Nothing more frustrating than trying to watch something and then half of it is basically advertisement breaks. Come on. Ugh.
