“UGH.” Yugi flung the shirt across the room in frustration. “None of this is working!”

Jounouchi, dodging flying apparel, shrugged helplessly. “I thought it looked okay…”

“It looked horrible!”

“So far you’ve said that every outfit looked horrible. Yug, you only have so many clothes to choose from.”

“Well you’re not helping,” Yugi snapped, uncharacteristically short-tempered. “You say everything looks fine.”

“Because it does all look fine!”

“Still not helping.”

“Don’t you have any more-clothes-conscious friends you could ask for this?”

Yugi spun around. “Anzu is working, and my only gay friend around here is Yami and in case you didn’t know, he’s the guy I’m dating so I can’t exactly ask for his help on what to wear on our first date!”

“Alright, alright…” Jounouchi backed up a step. “I never realized being in love would make you so…scary.”

Yugi sighed. “I’m sorry Jounouchi…this is just really stressful.”

“You do know that Yami won’t love you any less if you commit some kind of fashion disaster,” he ventured. “Or you could just wear your normal clothes, I’m sure he likes them.”

“I know, but…I want everything to be perfect, at least tonight. I want to impress him. It’s our first date, I should look special.”

“Well there was that guy in the United States that walked like, two hundred miles or something to propose to his girlfriend. He wanted to show her he was committed. That was impressive.”

“Yeah, see, that’s what I’m going for, but clothes-wise.”

“So you want an outfit that essentially says, ‘I’d do anything for you to notice and love me.’”

“Basically, yes.”

“Then why don’t you just go over naked?”

“JOUNOUCHI.” Yugi balled up his jacket and threw it at him, reddening.

“It’d make him notice! And love you, too.” Jounouchi grinned.

Yugi was now bunching up his spiked belt as if he was about to throw it, and noticing the potential for actual injury, Jounouchi quickly offered, “I could ask Mai to come over and help you. She knows fashion stuff.”

Yugi lowered the belt. “Really? Would you?”

“Sure.” He left the room quickly, pulling out his cell phone as he did. Ten minutes later, Mai peered around the corner of the room.

“Hi Yugi, Jounouchi said something about you driving him crazy.”

“I’m trying to pick an outfit for me and Yami’s first date, and Jounouchi wasn’t helping at all. He said every outfit was ‘fine.’” He checked the clock, voice growing panicked. “And I have to leave in like five minutes if I want to get to his house on time so I need some help fast.”

She leaned against the door thoughtfully. “Tell me what your best options are right now.”

“These jeans with this shirt, or these jeans, which will have a belt - I’m thinking this one - and this shirt which is like a vest, but I’d have an undershirt…or possibly the first jeans, but with this shirt and vest instead. And possibly this chain belt, but it’s a little flashy so I don’t know.”

Pursing her lips, she suggested, “Try the third, with the belt.”

“No good, Mai, he’s already tried that exact outfit on four times and hated it.” Jounouchi said, shaking his head as they waited in the hall. Once dressed, Yugi opened the door. Jounouchi shrugged.

“Once again Yug, you look fine.”

At the mere mention of the word ‘fine,’ Yugi began to turn back to his mirror, when Mai stepped in.

“Don’t listen to Jounouchi, it looks great.”

“Really?”

“Definitely. You look excellent, but you don’t look like you’re trying to look excellent. The belt isn’t flashy at all, it actually pulls the whole outfit together. Goes really well with the dark shirt.”

Yugi brightened. “I didn’t want to look too formal.”

“You don’t look too formal at all. You look like the perfect mix between casual and cool. Add those boots you have and a few bracelets, and you’ll be knocking Yami dead. Right Jounouchi? Yami’s gonna think he looks great?”

“Er…yes?”

Smiling now, Yugi fastened a few bracelets around his wrist, ran the brush through his hair one last time, and bopped out of the room happily. “Thanks Mai!”

Jounouchi stared. “He hated that outfit the last four times!”

Mai folded her arms. “’Fine’?”

“What?”

“You said he looked ‘fine.’”

“He did! Yami would have liked any of those outfits, you know I’m right.”

“Yes, but nobody wants to just look fine on their first date with the love of their life.”

“You’re saying all I had to do was tell him he looked better than usual and give him compliments, and I could have gotten out of here two hours sooner?”

“You’re so clueless.” She shook her head. Jounouchi frowned, bewildered.

Several minutes later across town, Yugi took a deep breath and headed up the walkway to Yami’s house. He had barely knocked before the door opened, and Yami stood in front of him, smiling, blushing a little. Yugi felt his breath catch up in his throat at the sight. He doubted Yami had spent hours picking out his clothes, yet they looked…perfect.

But it was the smile that really did it. Yami could have worn anything; that smile alone would have captivated Yugi. It was actually rather unfair.

“Ready to go?” Yami asked.

“Yeah.”

As they walked down the driveway back to the car, Yami took his hand. “You look great, Yugi.”

Yugi smiled and leaned into him. “So do you.”

Notes: Clueless!Jounouchi is funny. I like him. xD And manic!Yugi is funny too. xP
There actually was some guy here, (I think in California) that walked a large number of miles to propose to his girlfriend. I thought it was cute. x3 (And yes, I do realize they use the metric system in Japan.)
