Hawaiian Style Ahi Tuna Poke ... Appetizer or Quinoa Bowl

Feb 03, 2018 20:29

I've been wanting to try this Hawaiian dish ever since I ran across mention of it in some readings I was doing for other Hawaiian cuisine ... the classic or Spam loco moco, and Spam musubi come to mind. However, whenever I had had good quality ahi tuna on hand, I always ended up making something else. A month or two ago, I bought a one pound ( Read more... )

We used to eat poke all the time. It’s so good!

Where do you get sushi grade raw fish? I know frozen kills all the parasites so that is suitable; in Hawai’i they actually make poke from frozen fish quite often. Maybe I’ll try making some this summer if I can find some suitable fish!

Yes, mine is commercially flash frozen and stored for a specific amount below the temp required to kill parasites too. No fresh fish available in my area.

I especially liked that there were 4 individually wrapped (1/4 lb each) wedges in the package so I only have to thaw one at a time as needed. It only takes 24 hrs in the fridge to thaw.

Good to know! They have beautiful ahi at Costco - this recipe is definitely going on my summer roster, thanks!

I think it's a great dish any time of year.

Thank you for considering making it.

Mmm, now I know what I'm picking up after the Farmers Market today. :D It will be our app before the lamb stew!

Thank you. Just came in from an hour of snow shovelling and your comment made me smile.

Sadly, the store has started closing on Sundays, but I will stop there tomorrow after work. I will have poke!

That's a shame. I'm glad I went grocery shopping REALLY early on Saturday cause by 1pm it had started to snow. And now ... it's snowing again. I'm going to see if I can go shovel the front sidewalk, at least, at 6:30 or so if the snow has mostly stopped.

OMG, I miss having poke. Yours looks delicious! When Shog makes it, I find myself adding a lot of black sesame seeds to his condiment because apparently, there can never be too many of them for me. *snorts*

It was really good. I have black and white sesame seeds but was too lazy to go digging in the freezer for the black ones. (The white ones are in a small jar in the door of the freezer.) So I used a shake or 3 of one of the Japanese chili pepper mixes which has some in it. :)
