He knows that he's in trouble the second he sees her. This mess has gone on long enough, and it's gone way too far, but he's stuck. He never thought of himself as anything but an honest man. And, for the last few months, he's been nothing but a liar. All right, he hasn't told her any lies - if anything, he's been the most honest with her - be he also hasn't told her the truth.
Specifically the part where he knows just who she is, and that he's there, under orders. He was called up to do exactly what he was trained for: to be invisible and guard the Queen. No uniform, no checking in. Just do the job and keep her safe.
He didn't expect to fall for her, though. And, what's worse, he got the dog involved. He used his own best friend to get close to her. Sometimes, he wonders what the dog would say if he could talk. Would he cut the man down for his ruse? He needs to tell her the truth. He needs to stay away from her before he does something stupid.
Like telling her he's fallen in love with her.
Damnit.
