When DG pulled Leigh out of her lesson, the girl didn't question.

She was getting out of her lesson.

When DG brought her to the library, Leigh wondered what she had done.

Over by the secret door, she could see a box and her mother was kneeling in front of her.

But she was smiling.

"Hey, Kiddo," DG said with a smile. "I have a project I need your help with." Leigh nodded and DG stood up. As she moved over to the wall and pressed the release, Leigh stepped back.

"Daddy said I can't go in there."

DG smiled.

She turned back to Leigh and leaned over, pulling a lantern from the box. "That's right, he did. But," she said with a wink, "I have a plan." DG held the lantern out for Leigh and nodded for her to take it. Leigh reached up and took the handle.

Next, DG held up a piece of thin cord. "I need you to take this all the way down to the end of the tunnel." She gave Leigh another smile and nodded.

Leigh looked from the door to the lantern to her mother. "What if the door closes?"

DG smiled again.
________________

"I already took care of that," DG stated. And she had. After the adventure, DG and Glitch examined the door. Deciding that a combination of the dark and Leigh not knowing what the release looked like is what got her stuck in the tunnel in the first place, the two of them set about planning DG's new project.

DG turned the lantern up and gave Leigh a small push toward the dark hole. "Tell me when you get to the end," DG requested. "The door won't close," she said. "Promise."

Leigh gave her another look and crawled through the opening.

The tunnel looked different with light. Leigh could see wood on the walls and dirt on the floor. Well, she knew there was dirt on the floor because her dress was covered when she crawled out. That was more from the fall, really. She spotted the boards that she'd fallen over and stopped to kick them out of the path.

They wouldn't make her fall again.

"You still in there, Kiddo?" she heard her mother ask.

"Yeah," Leigh replied and remembered her task. When she reached the end of the passage, she turned. "This is the end, Mommy."

"One sec..."

While Leigh was spelunking, DG had pulled a hand drill out of the crate and worked a small hole just past the hinge of the secret door. Once the hole was complete, she reached for the other end of the wire Leigh was running and shoved it through, testing the diameter of the hole.

Leaning into the hole for a second, DG smiled. "You still in there, Kiddo?" She heard a small voice reply and then DG shifted a few inches over and began removing the outlet cover from the wall. After splicing the wires, DG thanked Popsicle's many lessons.
________________

"This is the end, Mommy," DG heard faintly. She smiled and pulled the wire running from the outlet to the hole and shoved it through. Giving it a tug, DG looked over her shoulder. "One sec!" She clipped the end off the wire she and Glitch had put together and twisted it to the side of the new switch. Connecting the wire from the library, DG looked into the dark and flipped the switch.

A second later, the entire corridor lit up. DG and Glitch had pilfered a few strands of the garden lights and created a rope light.

"Perfect."

"You can come back down, Leeloo," DG called and pulled the door shut just enough. Looking over her shoulder again, DG frowned and twisted around. Judging the space of the tunnel, she wouldn't be able to stand straight, but she could move down the distance fairly quickly. Passing a pile of timbers, DG assumed those were the culprits behind her daughter's torn dress and cut hands.

A little further down, she could see Leigh standing just off to one side and looking up. DG reached the end of the tunnel and found that the ceiling was higher.

A lot higher.
