Birthday Present Wheeler knew the second Brian came into the small living room that he was about to go outside. Wheeler, not Brian. Well, Brian was going, too. He wouldn't just let Wheeler go outside alone.
Brian was wearing different clothes, the dog noticed - not that dogs necessarily notice things like that, but Wheeler did. He didn't mind, though, because he was going outside. Wheeler liked it outside; he could run and roll around and Brian would throw a stick and Wheeler would bring it back.
It was a good life for a dog.
Wheeler stayed at Brian's side as they walked along the sidewalks of Central City, and he stopped for a moment as Brian turned left instead of right. Wheeler cocked his head to one side as he wondered if Brian was lost. The park was the other way.
Brian seemed to notice Wheeler wasn't at his side, because he stopped and looked back. Raising one eyebrow slightly, Brian nodded his head and continued to walk, still watching Wheeler. Wheeler snorted and continued along, quickly catching up to his friend.
Wheeler wondered why he even bothered with the man. People were far too much trouble, sometimes.
Soon, they reached the edge of the city and Wheeler actually froze at the sight before him: a field. Wide open, tall grasses and empty. "It's all yours," Brian said, waving a hand toward the field. Wheeler looked up and watched for a second, waiting for Brian to laugh and drag him back to the boring park. "Go," Brian nodded, waving again.
Wheeler didn't need to be told twice.
Brian laughed as he watched the dog tear across the field. Tearing his eyes away from the tall grasses he'd just disappeared in, Brian let his gaze wander across the horizon. Hearing the dog bark once, Brian snapped back to the present and looked back to the tall grasses.
"Wheeler?" he called, knowing the dog wouldn't go all the way to the tree line without Brian nearby - or would he? - and he took off up the hill at a slight jog. "Wheeler!" Brian called again as he reached the edge of the grass. Hearing another bark, Brian spun around, trying to place the sound versus the echo.
'Not a bad view of Central City,' he noted, and turned again as he heard a new sound. It wasn’t from a dog, but a person. "Wheeler?" he said, tentatively, and stepped into the knee-high grass. It took a few seconds, but he finally waded through the sea of yellow.
Wheeler was licking the dickens out of a young woman, who was ducking her head away, but laughing. "Wheeler!" Brian snapped and reached for the dog. "Sorry about that, miss. He does have manners," he added in a tone meant specifically for the dog.
"It's all right," Leigh said and reached up to scratch the dog behind the ears. "No harm done." She'd expected to be found, having slipped out of the palace without a guard of any sort, but she hadn't expected to be found by an overly-affectionate dog.
"Forgive me, but," Brian said, giving a quick glance around for anyone else, "are you all right?" It wasn't every day he happened across a woman, unescorted, in a field.
"Yes, just hiding," Leigh nodded, and glanced up to him. 'Holy crap,' she thought, beginning to understand the phrase her mother used to use regularly. At her words, Brian immediately ducked down and threw another glance over his shoulder.
"Who are we hiding from?" he asked with a slight grin. Wheeler moved over to him and licked him, to apologize. He noticed that she almost looked embarrassed, looking at her own lap as she sighed.
"Myself, I guess."
"I've had those days," he said with a slight snort. "If you'll pardon," he added with a shrug. 'Manners,' Brian heard, as if his grandmother was standing right behind him with a wooden spoon. Leigh watched the man for a moment, without making eye contact, and smiled when Brian began talking to the dog.
"You know better than to go around kissing pretty ladies, mister," he told Wheeler, then kissed the dog's head. "Sorry, again..." he trailed. Leigh blinked.
Was it possible that there was someone who didn't recognize her? Really? Maybe he was just being polite to offset the confusion of finding the Queen of the Outer Zone sitting in the dirt. Alone. It was in that moment that Leigh decided to do a very stupid thing.
'But one hour of stupid is worth it,' she told herself. Holding out a hand, she nodded. "Violet." Brian nodded and took her hand, giving it a good shake.
"Brian. And the drool machine, here, is Wheeler."
"As in a Wheeler?" Leigh chuckled.
"This puppy had a squeaky bark," Brian told her.
