Recs: Fandoms H-Z

Nov 20, 2008 16:36

No Harry Potter - my recs for that are a many-headed monster that I haven't yet wrestled into submission. Or something. Recs for House, Skins, Skins RPF and The History Boys have their own posts.

Hansel and Gretel

Sweet Fire by Elizabeth_Scripturient
Previously listed as 'Hansel and Gretel Incest Erotica in 100 words or less'. Clever imagery and condensed images.

High School Musical

Taylor/Chad, established Domme/sub from tweendom_anon
Repeat after me: I am not ashamed of reading this. I am not ashamed of enjoying this. I am not ashamed of finding this really, really hot.

iCarly

Delirious by arkeis07 (Carly/Sam)
Sam waits by the phone.

The District Sleeps Alone Tonight by iCitall (Carly/Sam)
"It’s him and Carly or it’s him and Sam covering up something that’s entirely Sam and Carly." A really interesting exploration of the effect the girls' relationship has on Freddie, and iCarly as a whole; very canon, and rather insightful.

Growing Pains by icitall (Carly/Sam)
This was simply wonderful. I loved seeing their relationship from Spencer's perspective; it really put a new spin on this pairing, where many fics are a bit samey.

ifake an interest by lilysaid (Carly/Sam)
"The makeover in 'iMake Sam Girlier' was a bust, but Sam decides there were certain perks to her lessons with Carly." A longish, sweet, sensual Cam fic that more than held up on a second read.

Picnic in the Park by bribitribbit (Carly/Sam)
Pretty much what it says in the title. A short and sweet in-character ficlet that made me go feel all soppy.

She's Got You High by fangirly_joy (Carly/Sam)
Sam using drugs is a trope I usually dislike, but it's pulled off here with wonderful characterization and a big dose of "Awww".

Jennifer's Body

Best Friends Forever by seriousfic (Jennifer/Needy)
Oh Jesus Christ. Bathtub sex, with water and loofahs and "make me clean". WHAT a bulletproof kink... even if you don't feel the same, there's lots to enjoy here, from the awesome premise to the excellent characterisation. It looks like it was actually fun to write, and it's sure as hell fun (and hot) to read.

The Itch by srslypau (gen)
Needy, post-movie. This is not just well-written, but clever and inventive - I especially liked the take on Needy's identity as being formed or subsumed by Jennifer.

Maybe by uselessmarks (Jennifer/Needy)
A little bit fucked up, a little bit guilty... perceptive and clever without being showy about the new pairing on the femslash block.

Stripped by khase_fan09 (Jennifer/Needy)
Oh man. The best thing about this fic is the way they talk - a bit dirty, yes, but without the characterization ever slipping. Femslash the way slash is often done: as the fic puts it, "rough and messy and fast...over much too soon." Their relationship is given a bit of space, some dead ends, and the mass of specific and delicious contradictions it deserves. If I sound like I'm rambling, it's probably because... well, read it for yourself to see exactly how it pushes my buttons. GAH. More like this, please.

tastes like teen spirit by pesha (Jennifer/Needy)
Told from the interesting and unexpected (for me at least) viewpoint of Jennifer after she goes all evil or whatever. This perfectly captures the tone of the film, and the length (what, c.4800 words is long for this fandom, right?) allows a bit more space for the characters to breathe. Contains flashbacks, confessions and lots of character insight for Jennifer.

Jonas Brothers RPF

Nothing Rhymes With Circus by that_1_incident (Joe/Nick, various Disney et al pairings)
One of my occasional not-at-all-guilty pleasures is reading long, involved, apparently random AUs which the author writes not as crack but as a 'serious' fic. This is one of those: the Jonas brothers work in a circus. The shippiness is actually not my favourite thing about this ship; I was more interested in just the set-up of the world, the unexpected parallels with real life, and the cameos from a handful of famous teenagers. A thoroughly involving read, with a deliciously languid pace and a lovely happy ending.

purgatory is a state of mind
by fic_saurus (Joe/Nick)
"Joe decided some months back that it was totally cool to be attracted to your brother as long as said brother possessed a modicum of, you know, attractiveness." Really well-written if slightly disturbing dubcon. (flocked)

Too Young to Feel This Old by likecharity (Joe/Nick)
Likecharity is as awesome in this fandom as she is in everything. The Jonas Brothers have GUILT and RELIGION and INAPPROPRIATE FEELINGS and LOVE OF MUSIC and yes, okay, this fic may make you erupt into capslock because it's just that good.

The Shape Your Faces Makes by likecharity (Joe/Nick; also Caleb/Nathan from Kings of Leon)
"He wants to understand where everything went wrong for them, because some part of him is scared to death it's going to be the same for him and his brothers too." The fic that will convince you KoL are, like, the alternate universe version of the Jonas brothers.

Keeping Up Appearances

Hand-Painted Blue Periwinkles by curia_regis (Hyacinth/Elizabeth)
I loved the characterisations, the vicar getting malaria, Emmet teaching Richard how to use a laundromat, that Elizabeth kept breaking china, that this, you know, existed. Funny and sad and sweet in turns; as eglitarianmuse says in the comments, "I think I enjoyed most of all that their relationship wasn't sudden. It didn't just happen one day. Things had to change for both of them." A must-read from the femslash littlebang if you have so much as a passing awareness of this show.

The L Word

attempts at floating (or, five things that never happened to lara and alice) by daneorange (Lara/Alice)
"These days, almost everything began and ended with Dana." Drabbles that are sad but resigned.

Crossword by sakuracorr (Bette, Jenny, Shane, various pairings thereof)
I hate Shenny, but I love messed-up, angsty Bette - and this is the best portrayal of that I've seen in fic.

Lady Gaga

art is a lie by moirariordan (Lady Gaga)
List-fic for the prompt "lady gaga in 30 years". As eccentric and delicious as the woman herself.

Children of the Moon by tristesses (Lady Gaga/Jo Calderone)
I shouldn't need to sell this to you, should I? Surely that pairing should do it. Anyway: a very clever take on the Gaga mythos (and ethos), dripping with sex and identity and all that good stuff.

Freak Show by lelola (Lady Gaga)
"Day in and day out, people stared at you and called you a freak, but being a freak was different from before. For the first time, you were in control of the word and its meaning." (scroll down; there's more than one fic for this prompt, though the one above is also worth a read.)

It's Time To Start Killing Billionaires by present_pathos (Lady Gaga/Taylor Swift)
Fisting. Dynamics. A criminally hot Taylor Swift, which is both terrible and awesome. Hearts in my eyes, you guys.

Kinda Busy by yeats (Lady Gaga/Beyonce, Telephone video)
As campy, kitsch and relentlessly homosexual as the video itself. All the details, the pop culture, the clothes are as Gaga as anything the lady herself could come up with.

murder mix by fivewhatfive (Lady Gaga)
I can't think of a better description than jengrrl's: "Gaga does Arkham Asylum." Clever but completely insane. Read it and then reread it - you know you want to.

Thinking on Stefani by ladyofspring (Gaga/Taylor Swift)
"It’s strange. Taylor could swear there was a time when she had been a nice girl." This is so strange and cracked out and porny. I reread it before reccing, thinking maybe it was just a novelty thing, but no - it's actually done better than maybe 90% of RP femslash. Unexpectedly awesome.

Two and you're soaring by forsweatervests (Lady Gaga)
"She doesn't need the therapy." So apparently Gaga herself is like a mini fandom now? People are turning out stuff for it that, whilst probably not the kind of thing I'll come back to, is clever and skillfully done and even gives me feelings. I would include this in that category.

Loving Annabelle

Hot for Teacher (Cold for Student) by wisdomeagle (Annabelle/Simone)
I have a confession to make: I haven't actually seen this film. But if it's anywhere near as good as this fic, then I know I should.

Matilda

The Key is Under the Plantain Leaf by sutlers (Miss Honey)
"The house, when Matilda leaves." I received this as gift for Yuletide 2010, and couldn't be any happier with it. To rehash my comments and those of others: this is a story that takes the canon very seriously, and treats it in a decidedly adult way. The house is like a slightly menacing character all of its own, and it looms large in a story about the weight of Miss Honey's accumulated sadnesses. This does not disagree in any sense with canon; it just gives a completely different take on it, one where the good guys are maybe not so good, and the happy endings not simply happy. It's filled with so many excellent details, which I don't want to ruin my mentioning here, but never feels cluttered by them; this fic is simply written and painful to read. Even without bias, I think I could say that it is absolutely essential reading if you have any adult interest in this book.

Kindness by AylaPascal (Miss Honey, pairings implied)
"When Jenny was ten, she was Agatha's slave in all but name." A second gift for Yuletide. (Aren't I lucky?) Whilst this fic has a similar basis to The Key..., it's a completely different take on Miss Honey's life; a mixture of innocence and darkness, and a look at Miss Honey that confirms what a tenacious survivor she is, despite her apparent fragility. Some really lovely lines and images in this. PLUS. This story was written for me, so it includes some dirty fanon I very much enjoy; Ms Trunchbull/Miss Honey. Whilst there is nothing explicit in the fic, and it's certainly not 'a story to turn you on', this pairing and all its associated tropes - authority figure taking advantage, exploitation etc - push my buttons hard. If you're an intertextuality geek, you should definitely read alongside the fic above for an excellent juxtaposition of fannish takes on the same canon, particularly the characterisation of Magnus.

Something Sweet by CA Moore (Matilda/Miss Honey)
To find something in this pairing is awesome anyway, but the telekinesis makes it extra awesome. Now, if only Miss Honey was still her teacher...

Warmth Out of the Cold by wisdomeagle (Matilda/Miss Honey)
A short, short thing jam-packed with amazing. Fluffy whilst still being, you know, pseudo-incesty. HOT. Plus, the author warns, "No ages given, and I'm not telling you how old they were in my head." Woohoo! It's okay; I won't tell you how old they are in my head, either.

Maurice (E. M. Forster)

Aurora Mundi by stuffwelike (gennish, ensemble)
A slow-burning gem from Yuletide 2010. It's a post-script to the novel, but a very different one from that which Forster originally intended (escaping into the greenwood, etc). The characters have aged in a satisfying and believable way, particularly Anne, who steals the show somewhat, and Maurice, who is much more relaxed and comfortable with himself.

Mean Girls

Only One Year by recrudescence (Janis/Regina)
I'm basically too tired to do this justice right now, but trust me when I say that this is EPIC. In the sense of awesome, that is - it's only short, but there is A BATHROOM MAKEOUT and a glimpse of post-film Regina. Yum.

So Much More Than That by Jengrrrl (Regina/Cady)
Jengrrrl is rightly known in some parts of the internet as one of the finest purveyors of high-quality multi-fandom femslash. It's because of fics like this: easy to get into, brilliantly characterized and with excellent fandom-specific voices. Love all the little details incorporated from canon.

you say you want a revolution by ms_chak/alostcorner (Janis/Regina)
Whilst I've listed a pairing for this, I think it's really closer to gen than a shippy piece. Janis comes to terms with being maybe a bit gay, there are people being friends (<3) and bitchy parties, and basically the whole thing is lovely. You should go read this, because it's Mean Girls fic that manages to be intelligent, realistic and even a little bit heartwarming whilst remaining totally in canon. Bravo.

Merlin

Pairing Pendragon/Merlin by anon (Arthur/Merlin)
If you're in the Merlin fandom, you've probably already read this, so this rec is not for you. If you've never watched Merlin, however; if you know nothing or nearly nothing about it; well, me too. That is really not the point of this fic. This is not a story about Arthur and Merlin, at least for me (I barely know who they are). This is a story about fandom, at least in its Livejournal variation: about beta readers and BNFs and waiting to read an amazing new fic. It made me feel all choked about these crazy things we do; this crazy hobby we have, that is, perhaps, not quite normal. The sadly-anonymous author has basically written a story about us - all of us. It's funny and cute and so, so true.

Misc

The Curse of the Bambino (And Other Love Stories) by vnilla (Glasses Guy/Jock Guy)
Yuletide fic based on a YouTube video of a school cover of a Taylor Swift song, which is pretty fun to check out, but (I would imagine) not really necessary for appreciating this fic. "I hope you enjoy dorky teenage boys with a great deal of sexual tension."

Curtains are Monogamous by sheldrake
Okay, so when I came across this I was all "WTF?" but I bookmarked it anyway, because what is the internet for if not random crazies? As it happens, this is pretty amusing. My favourite line: "Curtains don't care whether people are girls or boys or anything, although we are mainly interested in other curtains." I think if I could somehow work that into conversation, my life would be complete.

Memories of You Being Beautiful by comeonbabyfunky (Briar Rose/Snow White)
One of the real gems of the femslash littlebang: a retelling of Sleeping Beauty in the darkest, most painful way possible, full of perfect atmospheric details. It's beautifully written, but that doesn't really do it justice; it's like a ballgown so perfectly seamed that you can't even see how it was stitched together. It has a sense of timelessness, too - after reading, I can't imagine that it isn't part of the fairytale. I can honestly say the slash is secondary here: for me, at least, it's more a story about how the gifts given to Rose are the worst curses. I can't recommend this enough.

NEW Meta Yuletide Fic (The Fic You Wish Your Fic Smelled Like) by kristin
Based on the Old Spice commercials, so you should probably take a few minutes to watch one or two of those if you don't know them, to get in the mood. This is the kind of off-the-wall fic that Yuletide seems to produce one or two of each year, and it's . References! Footnotes! Perfectly done, deliciously purple hyperbole! It's hard to explain what it's about, exactly, but here's the summary: "Why hello, Yuletide reader. Why don't you sit down for a bit? Get comfortable, because when you click my link you will be reading a work of such magnificence that you won't be able to look away, even if a crew of zombies breaks through your window and bites your neck."

Misc RPF

always have the light on for you by takethewords (David Tennant/Billie Piper)
Achingly beautiful writing. Sex without the smut, and none the worse for it.

By Nines by celeria (Mary Kate/Ashley)
"You first felt it three years ago, the first time she kissed you." Like all good incest fics, the heavy theme behind this is growing up. Celeria (thepastperfect now) expresses it gently and surely.

Captured by aeonian (Mary Kate/Ashley)
"There were so many ways to be caught." This is some really good writing. I mean, whoah. Just a delight; a beautiful, faded scrapbook of a fic, woven together by words, photos and news coverage.

Everyone's At It by onthehillside (Various Disney pairings)
I stupidly left this one in the 'To rec' folder for far too long to say very many useful things about it; however, what I can say is that this is awesome. Like, here I am reccing Disney het awesome. There are feelings and being a teenager in the spotlight and there is also plot. Very enjoyable indeed.

For Reasons Unknown by amathala (John Barrowman/Eve Myles)
"When he kisses her, it's another story - not familiar, this, but not far off; Jack and Gwen, and it's not like he's never kissed her before, but there are no cameras, now." Denial and playfulness and "her hand twists in the collar of his shirt as she comes".

i would add up what you mean to me, but by pirateygoodness (Demi Lovato/Selena Gomez)
This pairing may be common, but it tends to be written incredibly badly. Not so here. It's slow, careful, full of uncertainty and perfect, sweet moments. They're friends and then they're not and then they're more and they're so young. Gorgeous.

Identicalities by Nia (Mary Kate/Ashley)
I confess, I have no interest in the Olsen twins whatsoever, but I wrote a fic about them for a kink meme and read this for ~research. I'm glad I did; it's teenager badsex written carefully and specifically, and very well done indeed.

It's Sex With Someone You Love by seriousfic (Megan Fox/Megan Fox's clone)
Hilarious. That's all I have to say. Freakin' hilarious.

just a river in egypt by 00mina (David Tennant/Billie Piper)
"she makes a promise to herself it will be just this once, only one last time before it's over forever."

Paparazzi by amathela (Demi Lovato/Selena Gomez)
Sweet ficlet about love as a place of safety and normality. The kind of thing that makes you want to draw little hearts around their names.

A Poor Excuse Is Better Than None by ellisbelle (Jennifer Saunders/Dawn French)
Look at that pairing. Maybe, right now, you won't want to read this - but if that's the case, it will play on your mind, and eventually, I'm sure, your curiousity will get the better of you. And that will be a Good Thing. This fic is amazing. The images are perfectly sketched out, the second person viewpoint is used to brilliant effect, and there's such a truth in the depth of feeling between them.

Run and Never Tire by cherryroad (Demi Lovato/Selena Gomez)
Yes, it's spanking fic, but there's no way I could read hardcore kink for these two. This is all the more sexy for how sweet it is.

signal when you want me (when you want me to stop) by likecharity (Alison Mosshart/Jamie Hince)
So. Likecharity is really into this band called The Kills, and yup, they have some crazy chemistry, and a really interesting dynamic. As the author interprets it, this dynamic is also smokin' hot. This fic is actually slightly uncomfortable to read, I think, like what we're witnessing is just too private - and likecharity is of course clever enough to note this herself, and mess with it a bit.

Yesterday by rubykate (Mary Kate/Ashley)
"It all began when Ashley said: 'I need you to kiss me.' As soon as she walked into your bedroom, without any build-up. 'I want to know what it’s like to kiss myself.'"

Mona Lisa Smile

Emnity and Amity by Sangerin (Giselle/Betty)
"It's the easiest thing in the world to wrap her arms around Betty and hold her tight while she cries." I rewatched this film recently and couldn't believe that I had not previously noticed the sub main text between these two. This could honestly be made up of deleted scenes from the film, and I can't read it without constantly saying "awww" under my breath. It's lovely.

subtext by a (Giselle/Betty)
Some thoroughly canon snippets of interaction, and beautifully judged in terms of period detail. For example: "Betty bent back over her calligraphy, deceptively, for she was still watching Giselle's skirt out of the corner of her eye. Giselle's high heels clicked back over the floor, her dark dress swished around her knees; the last impression Betty caught was the seams of her flesh-colored stockings vanishing into a doorway. For a moment, she thought she might throw down her pencil and follow, though she didn't know what she would do if she did."

The Want of Human Desire by thecolourclear (Katherine/Giselle)
The author describes this, rather wonderfully, as "a love story told in snapshots".

untitled ficlet by Ari (Giselle/Betty)
After they move to New York. It's sweet and happy and perfectly captures a sense of heartrending devotion.

Murphy Brown

but liquor is quicker by cheapmetaphor
Lovely, melancholy, underplayed fic dealing with Murphy's alcoholism. "All reporters drink."

Mysterious Skin

On A Neck, On A Spit by mytimehaspassed (Brian/Neil)
"You and your hands and your lips on Brian, what’s really funny is how different you two are, how different this has made you, this has scarred you."  A perfect Neil voice and a fucked-up take on the two of them that isn't afraid to go there - to twist your heart into pieces and tell you things so awful that you want to forget them, or remember them forever. (flocked)

Narnia
recs now have their own page here.

New Tricks

Bring In The Clowns by lindsey_grissom (Sandra)
My comment:
"Loved it, obviously. I think the second person POV works really well for Sandra, and I like the detached tone, especially in the last line.

Ohh, Sandra. I just want her to be happy!"

Five Times Sandra Kissed A Member of Her Team by julesoh (Sandra/Various)
In a fandom as small as this one, it's always a pleasant surprise to run across a fic this good. The portrayal of Sandra is so perfect; it's no secret that I have the biggest crush on her and this has all the reasons why written beautifully into it.

He Knows by ralst (Sandra/Emily)
WHAT NEW TRICKS FEMSLASH WHAT. If that sentence makes you want to capslock too, then you'll already be reading this, right?

Idle Conversation by lost_spook (Sandra, Gerry)
"Gerry asks Sandra a personal question that might possibly be a proposition."

Jane Tennison Never Had to Deal With This by ladyvivien (Sandra/Gerry)
Hey, it's not quite Sandra/Naomi (Sandromi?), but seeing as I'm unlikely to get hold of that any time soon, I was more than happy to read this instead. I think the image of a "bruised and bitten" Sandra Pullman will stay with me for quite some time.

Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood by lost_spook (Sandra, crossover with Torchwood)
Sandra meets Captain Jack. It goes about as you'd expect.

Rain From the Clouds of the Heart by lindsey_grissom (Sandra)
"or, Five Times Sandra Pullman Cried Alone and One Time She Didn't." Whilst I would never deny myself a chance to read about Sandra having sex (with more or less anyone), I think I almost prefer Sandra's angst. This fic bears concentrated quantities of that. The structure of it is incredibly clever; it's an excellent way in to Sandra's loneliness, vulnerability and need to be strong, as well as her relationships with her boys. If I had to isolate a tiny snippet of awesome, though, it would of course be this: "The bindings around her wrist pull sharply when she moves and she knows she won’t be putting bondage on her list of enjoyments ever again." Sandra cries! And enjoys bondage! A hundred times yes.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

She's the One by SarahMc (Harding)
"He is Dale Harding. He is a graduate of college and he has a beautiful wife." It's kind of masochistic to read this, but don't make any apologies for yourself - it's awesome, and well worth it.

Peter Pan

at the edge of the world looking off by aphrodite_mine (Wendy/Hook)
Sometimes aphrodite's writing can be a bit dense (not that that's a criticism, necessarily), but this is both extremely clever and quite accessible. The writing is gorgeous (but do I really need to tell you that?) and the thoughts about stories that it forced to the surface lingered with me for quite some time.

Romeo and Juliet

As Garlic Cloves and Butter by volta_arovet (gen)
"Romeo is in love, Benvolio's in denial, and Mercutio is an ass." OH MERCUTIO. Still bitchin' it up, being the only good thing about this play. Volta does an excellent job at rendering Shakespearian prose (right down to iambic pentameter, bitches) and writing terrible puns and excellent banter, just like the man himself.

If love be rough with you, be rough with love by daria234 (Mercutio/Romeo)
A take on an ongoing relationship between these two that I simply adore. Bitter little ficlet with a first-person Mercutio POV - and I do love Mercutio.

Mercutio/Tybalt sentences by misao_kunoichi
This is the wrong-side-of-the-tracks pairing I want to see, not Romeo and Juliet. Yawn!

Waste Our Lights in Vain by Nifra Idril (Mercutio/Romeo)
If you're going to write Shakespeare fic, it had better be bloody good. Thankfully, this fits the bill. Almost every sentence is rapturous.

Scooby Doo

wipe the dirt from everything that touches you by kaiwynn (Daphne/Velma)
Is it the weirdest fandom I've ever read? Probably, but only because I haven't found anything for The Lion King yet. This is unexpectedly awesome.

Secret History

Your Shadow by antarctic/ohargos (Charles/Camilla)
"Their favourite fairy tale is Hansel and Gretel, of course." Dark and clever, this story is told half in parentheses - which seems just right.

Sesame Street

NEW Why Sex Ed Should Stay in Schools by greenspine (Bert/Ernie)
Sex ed comes to Sesame Street. In thoroughly bad taste, probably - you're your own best judge of whether you'll enjoy this, but I found it both slightly sickening and rather amusing.

Snow White

Bleed by redcandle17 (Snow White/Wicked Queen)
Twisted and dirty and delicious; one of the comments mentions "the blurring of jealousy and desire," a phrase which says far more about this ficlet than I am capable of so soon after reading it.

Spooks

The Book of Ruth by Zai (Ruth/Harry)
I'm incredibly particular about the characterization of Ruth, because she's too wonderful to be taken lightly. Here, however, she's treated just as she deserved. Set after she leaves Mi5, it is of course heart-wrenchingly sad, but the ending is possibly even more painful. Look, I can't really form coherant thoughts about this fic, because I love it too, too much. If you know the fandom, you should read.

Five Images of Exhibitionism by Sangerin (Tessa/various)
Tessa uses sex to control and manipulate those around her, as a means of both seeing and being seen, but this is subtle and perceptive rather than sordid. I especially like that the scenes fit into canon - after all, in a show like Spooks, with the focus clearly not on relationships, there's plenty of room for that. Very well executed indeed.

We Will Always Be At War by lauriestein (Ruth/Harry)
Ruth is so weary, but Harry gives her the strength to carry on. An exquisitely written ficlet.

St Trinian's

Going the Distance by sangerin (Kelly/Annabelle)
Just a cute, clever ficlet about how these two are totally homogay. I love all the little details about how different groups in the school react to their sleeping together.

Sucker Punch

here's the trick by bestiary (Blondie/Amber)
"'We should hurry,' Amber whispers, her voice breaking." I don't know how the author did it, but this fic evokes sheer sexual desire, letting you breathe only when Amber does. A little bit sweet and a lot hot.

Hysteria by anonymous (Rocket wankfic)
An awesome, chatty Rocket voice takes you through the trials of just trying to get off in the hospital 'verse. I'm a sucker for old school asylum stuff, so the references to masturbation as a cure for hysteria really made this for me.

NEW  like all the other girls do by anonymous (Gorski/Sweet Pea)
Fic for the prompt, "Sweet Pea may act tough, but she's really just a little girl who needs looking after." It's both tender and dirty, and the voices are spot-on.

NEW  Polish Therapy by anonymous (Gorski/Baby Doll)
"But more than Sweet Pea's show--much to Sweet Pea's humiliation--Babydoll's show gets the most attention." Okay, so this was written for a kink meme, but it's definitely... emotionally kinky, as well as sexually. Total id fic.

Shared by seriousfic (Sweet Pea/Rocket/Baby Doll)
I love the idea of a threesome with hierarchy. Sweet Pea walks in on her sister with Baby Doll, and isn't sure whether she's okay with that...

NEW  Sweet Pea's Diary by anonymous (Gorski/Sweet Pea/Baby Doll plus permutations)
How could you not fall in love with a series which begins "Dear Diary, Today was the worst!!1!!!!11!! Babydoll came back from her session with Gorski and she was NOT WEARING ANY UNDERWEAR"? Contains ageplay, lols, etc.

Supernatural

Familiar Admonishments by teand (John/Dean)
A pairing I prefer by far to Sam/Dean (sorry). It's chan and incest but dealt with... sort of sensitively? Builds a believable world for the characters. The sex isn't explicit, but the emotions are.

NEW I will be your Samson (the Golden Autumn Leaves remix) by rivers_bend (Sam/Dean)
"Five times Sam remembers."

I'm at your will once again by lazy_daze (Sam/Dean)
Filthy, nasty, porny watersports fic. Probably no redeeming value except AWESOME. In a similar vein, see And So Never Ending by the same author.

I'll never forget the way you look tonight by cjmarlowe (gen)
The Winchesters have a good apocalypse. Yes, it is possible.

John/Dean; public spanking, humiliation, bottom!Dean by anonymous
I've never seen a kink meme as absolutely filthy as those in this fandom. It makes me feel so at home!

Last Outpost of All That Is by eighth_horizon (Sam/Dean)
This is not a fic to polish off when you have twenty minutes to spare - oh no. This is a fic to be savoured, a fic that is completely absorbing. Novel length apocafic that's well thought-out to the point of relentlessness; it asks the question, "What happens when there's nothing left?" and doesn't give you any easy answers. The length is also used in another way: a sense of dependence is built up, not just between Sam and Dean but also for the reader. After a while, only these characters matter; if one of them went, not only the other but also the reader would be unable to cope. In terms of comparison the closest I can get is 'On A Clear Day' by Perfica (a Snarry story that can be found here)  - it's that level of quietness and claustrophobia, but then, eventually, a kind of peace. It might even have one-up on that fic in that there's more of it, and I didn't want it ever to end.
The only criticism I can make of this story relates to the first smutty scene. It doesn't feel to me as though it's paced quite right, and really jarred me when I reached it. That said, however, I would rec this without reservations. There's humour, there's angst, it's wonderfully written and it's a story I know I'll return to again and again.

A Mother's Duty by Bridget McKennet (Ellen/Jo)
Harvellecest is probably up there with Snarry in my list of favourite things ever, but it's a lot less frequent. I may be biased, then, but I'll also be the first to admit that in terms of actual quality this drabble may not be one of the best. However, there is mother/daughter incest and Ellen 'teaching' her girl about sex - so it's still rated A for Awesome in my mind.

No More Than It Is by cyclops_squid (John/Dean)
"He never can look Dad straight in the face, and it’s probably a blessing in disguise." So-wrong-it's-right, jaded rather than angsty - the perfect smutlet for this pairing.

Pull Over by jjtaylor (Sam/Dean)
"It's not like Sam has a thing or anything." More desperate, needy watersports fic.

Standing Appointment by softbluebuddy (Ellen/Jess)
More Ellen femslash? Please? If not, I'll be forced to read this again - and how awful would that be?

The Winchester Show: The Show Continues  and Part Two by Incognita (Sam/Dean)
Explicit, dirty, unpretentious smut. Chastity belts, orgasm denial, demons made them do it and no redeeming value - except in hotness, of course. There are other parts in this 'verse too, but this is my favourite.

you and me and the pillows make three by wanttobeatree (gen)
Is this the single most adorable thing ever? (The answer is yes.) Sam and Dean make a pillow fort. Amusing, tightly written and, as promised, truly schmoopy.

Sweeney Todd

Guiding Hand by dangerousdame (Toby/Mrs Lovett)
"Mrs. Lovett realizes that, sadly, she might need a replacement for Todd someday." A small, slightly twisted snippet that, in my head at least, fits within the confines of canon.

The Man-eater by shyaway (Sweeney/Mrs Lovett)
Mrs Lovett sees love everywhere it isn't. Perfectly in character.

Propriety by das_mervin (Sweeney/Mrs Lovett)
This author really gets these characters; gets that sex between them should never be romantic. Here, it's "rough, vicious, almost cruel, bloody, and quick," just as it should be.

T'is Pity She's A Whore by athousandwinds (Judge Turpin/Lucy Barker)
"He wonders what her maiden name was; he'll make her take it again." A creepy kind of wonderful.

Voyeur by das_mervin (Sweeney/Mrs Lovett)
Gloriously twisted, just as this fandom should be.

The Time Traveller's Wife

Enough Time by Rabbit (Alba)
Very good, very sad, and very plausible. I love stories that think hard about Alba. This is full of tragic recurrences and, once again, the whirlpool of a single moment.

und mit Geistesstärke tu ich Wunder auch by leiascully (Alba)
One of those things I never would have thought about seeking out, but stumbled across on Yuletide - and I'm glad I did. Goethe and the ways Alba's life differs from her father's.

Weeds

refrigerator by stop_theworld (Andy/Nancy)
"...and in the dark there is Nancy, sticky and soft and heavy, and maybe, in the most monumentally fucked-up way, he’s happy."

Whoniverse

Aberration by madamotaku (Master-centric)
"The Master plays with his new indestructible toy, and finds it a bit more troublesome than he thought it would be." This is the kind of fic the fandom needs more of.

A Different Sort of Need by moogle62 (Master/Doctor)
"'People are dying while you're in my hand,' says the Master, and watches the resentment, the anger, the need, flicker through the Doctor's face: the clenched jaw; the flutter at his temple; the thin mouth."

Blood Ties by sistercarrion (Master/Doctor)
A Master POV fic which manages to capture the true extent of his megalomania. Also, knifeplay.

Branding by Brit M (Jack/Ianto)
When I saw the title I knew I had to read this: branding is one of my more bizarre kinks, but only really when it's consensual. As I'm sure you can imagine, that's rather uncommon in fic. Here, it's explored from Ianto's perspective more than Jack's, which I really enjoyed; it manages the difficult task of getting inside his head, and does so in prose that's, to use the words of the fic itself, "simple and meaningful".

The End of All Things by selskia (Master/Doctor)
The Master drives the Doctor insane. Ohhh, this is deliciously dark.

I Will Let You Drown by iodinemoon (Ten)
"Not happy-go-lucky Ten. Not angsty Ten either. Dark and twisty Ten." Just the kind of Doctor I like.

the journal of irreproducible results by wired_lizard (Master/Doctor/Jack)
My favourite fic in this fandom. It's really sick and really, really hot. The Time Lords work out their issues by torturing Jack, which is just about the best concept ever.

Leather Gloves and Paradoxies by magicallaw (Master/Donna, Ten/Donna)
It's no secret that Donna is awesome - and so is this. It's also cracky and hilarious.

metric by fic_saurus (Master/Doctor)
"Of course he can't take the Master outside the TARDIS, because that would be like setting a starving dog loose on a pack of sheep. Instead, the Doctor keeps him muzzled, suspended in the time vortex, and watches the Master slowly lose his mind." (flocked)

Need (Illegitimate) by wired_lizard (Gwen/various)
"She wonders vaguely, on the way home, if this is what shell-shock feels like." Jack's gone; how do the team cope? Featuring, among other things, a fucked-up Gwen, a filthy Owen and several bleakly glorious images.

passive tense by fic_saurus (Doctor/Rose)
Kinky, but not simplistically so, and undeniably sad. Now here's an interpretation of this pairing I can get behind. (flocked)

Pierced to the Root by used_songs (Jack/Ianto)
"Things change after the Year that Never Was. Jack touches him with more desperation. There are always more bruises." Desperation is the right word, but it's a quiet kind of desperate: Jack watches, and waits, and remembers. Melancholy and smut wrapped up in a beautiful, poetic style of writing.

Playing Dress Up by sistercarrion (Gwen/Tosh)
Drabble, but *swallow* really, really hot and look, I don't even like Gwen femslash (Gwenslash?) usually, but yeah, it's done to perfection here.

Red and Fourth by rm (Jack/Ianto, Jack/OC)
The way this story is told - with all the sections, almost like bullet points - doesn't quite work for me. I think it is the right way for this story to be told, but in its execution it just feels a bit off to me; a bit too abrupt. Regardless, when I read the summary ("Jack has a rebound relationship. Because Jack is a fuck-up it lasts for 45 years.") I knew had to read this straight away, and I was right. Also, the thing where Jack is called Ianto Jones and then has to say 'sir' in return (I'm not doing it justice; you'll see when you read it) is oddly painful and clever and perfect.

The Rules of Torchwood Three by sam_storyteller
An absolute must-read. Laugh-out-loud funny and completely within the spirit of the first two series of the show.

Vertrauen by scifichicx (Jack/Ianto)
Ianto dominates Jack. What's not to like?

Zombieland

Are You There, God? It's Me, Little Rock by Sarah T (gen)
"Being a kid in Zombieland is fun, and not fun, all at the same time. On the one hand, you have a code name, and a shotgun, and no bedtime whatsoever..." The light-hearted tone of the film combined with an excellent grasp of world-building. (Or not really 'world-building', I suppose, since it's fanfiction, but certainly of the world already built.) This is a ridiculously likeable little fic focussed on Little Rock's relationship with her sister, and relationships between the foursome generally.

Breaking Rule #37 by Ladymordecai (gen)
Short ficlet dealing with the realities of a post-apocalyptic world, in a completely Zombieland way.

a kiss with a fist is better than none by austen (Little Rock/Tallahassee)
Well, that's the listed pairing, but it's mostly Little Rock, being, as usual, young and old all at once.

Rule 34 by tooth_and_claw (Columbus/Tallahassee)
Supermarkets are very appealing in Zombieland. This little fic had me smirking throughout.

Rules For Being A Girl in the Zombie Apocalypse by bethfury (Wichita, various pairings implied)
This seems like a fun, gimmicky kind of fic but there's a fair bit of plot in there too. A series of remarkably emotionally charged drabbles about Wichita's new life.

The Rules, or: Men are From Mars, Zombies are From Pluto by marinarusalka (Columbus/Tallahassee)
"The rules for surviving Zombieland are also pretty useful for surviving life." Columbus' rules are one of my favourite things about the film, if not just my favourite, so I loved this take on them in the fic. The brilliant Columbus POV also serves to make this pairing believable for me.

State of the Union by lanyon (Columbus/Wichita, Little Rock/Tallahassee)
A beautiful, clever, crazy post-movie drabble in Columbus' voice.

Zombies Don't Like Ice Cream by Sister_Wolf (gen)
"Tallahassee has a survival rule to share." Just a cute and amusing canonesque snippet.
