Warmth Out of the Cold

"Morning, Mum," says a small, jokey voice next to Jenny's ear, and it takes her a moment to realize who --

"Matilda," she says, and rolls her eyes, snuggling deeper under the comforter. "I wish you wouldn't call me that."

"You are," Matilda says. "Teacher, mother, friend --"

"In that order?"

"Chronologically in that order. Emotionally it's the other way around."

"Yes, sometimes life happens like that. It takes us a long time to realize --"

"To realize what, Miss Honey?" Matilda asks, her eyes wide open and bright with -- not innocence. Not Matilda. With curiosity, then.

"What we have in someone. What a person means to us."

"I know what you mean to me, though," Matilda says, quite serious, sitting up with her chin propped on her hands. "I always have."

"And what's that?"

"Salvation."

Matilda's kiss is quick and tender and deep, full of knowing that Miss Honey will never share. Her hands are so small, her brain so big, and her heart so unfathomable that Jenny can only shake her head and burrow down in the deep blankets and new love that keep her warm.
