Nine Whole Years

Jan 01, 2013 18:59

As I was celebrating New Year’s Eve, I started reflecting on what had happened to me in 2012. And I must admit… nothing really jumped out at me. 2012 was a perfectly okay year for me. Not amazing, not bad. Sure, there were things I would have loved to see go better, but when ISN’T that the case. 2012 saw 47 posts, slightly up from last year. Seems to be a pattern; after writing these reviews, I pledge to write more often. And I do… for a month or two. Then I slide right back to only two or three a month. Oh well. At least it makes these reviews easier to do!

By the way, just wanted to point out… I’ve used the exact same profile picture since the day this blog was started. Go me!

Eight Years Of Fox - 1/1/12 - The other thing I learned? Try to start these reviews on a more positive note.

Pet Problems - 1/4/12 - I can’t say for sure, but I think this was the point where I allowed myself to start using the word “fuck” in my posts. I am sure I said it before, but incredibly rarely. 2012 is when I let myself use it more often. But not often.

Locked Up - 1/7/12 - I don’t remember how well this worked, locking up my credit card. But considering I’m still financially at risk, I don’t think it worked all that well. Or it’s time to try it again.

No Room For FC - 1/8/12 - Hmm… I started off 2012 just as negatively as 2011 had been. And I wonder why people don’t read my LJ all that much (other than the fact that LJ is, you know, pretty much dead.)

In Five… Four… Three… - 1/11/12 - I still remember that meeting, seeing the police officers standing just off to the side. Man that sucked. In case you don’t recall, my school was the one with the teacher who had the sexual relations with a student she was playing Words With Friends with. That whole episode was disappointing as the teacher involved was basically a good person who made a bad choice.

FC Of 12 - 1/16/12 - Though I clearly remember being there, the new venue, and that it was a good release for me, the details don’t stand out now that it’s a year back. Odd how that works. For example, I remember the general badness of the karaoke, but I don’t remember the details like the song or what the singer looked like.

No Jury! - 1/17/12 - Jury duty is a double-edged sword. Yes, you might have to sit on a jury and, as a teacher, that would suck. But since you MIGHT get called, you have to take the day off on that chance. (Okay, you don’t HAVE to, but it’s easiest that way.)

Kicked Up A Notch - 1/25/12 - I was so excited to have my college professor see my show. But I don’t think I posted what happened after this day. He actually didn’t get to see it. I sent him performance dates when I first started preparing the show. But the dates changed and he didn’t notice that in a follow up e-mail. Thus, he almost drove from SLO to the Bay Area to see the show… a week after it closed! We were both quite disappointed by that, but I sent him a DVD and program of the show. Oh, and see? Casual use of the word “fuck.”

Whine Bitch Moan - 2/2/12 - “Kvetch?” “Chutzpah?” Was I in the middle of my 12th grade spelling list when I wrote this?

The End Of Time - 2/11/12 - BEST POST OF 2012 RUNNER-UP - How sappy, getting sentimental over an alarm clock. By the way, it does still work for telling time, but I don’t trust the alarm function and use my cell phone now.

Coffee Me? - 2/18/12 - Coffee sounds like a good idea right now… Time for a coffee break!

Occupied! - 2/19/12 - Must have been that one day since it hasn’t happened since. Still, to have it happen three times in one night is surprising! And I giggled when I read “marathon dump.” I’m such a child sometimes.

Jump, Jump For My Love (Jump In!) - 2/29/12 - For such an inane little post, there’s so much to cringe about. Mostly, the post title. Really? I had to go for a dated 1980’s song lyric that most people don’t remember? And chalk the whole post up to “posting because I should post today.”

Why Is Bad So Expensive? - 3/1/12 - Yeah, supply and demand I guess. I’m realizing it’s more about rarity. The movies aren’t wanted so there are few DVDs, making it rare. Demand doesn’t factor in to that much.

Grrrrr… - 3/10/12 - STILL haven’t remembered the password…

More Than Meets… No, I Can’t Do That… - 3/16/12 - For actually kinda enjoying the first movie of the series, I don’t think I’ve seen the rest of them. And before you get any ideas, I’m not in a rush to see the rest.

Circular Reasoning - 3/24/12 - I didn’t get it, but man, I’m loving the power tools I’m buying for my school theatre. Who would have thought?

Snakey Suspicions - 3/31/12 - I was asked during Christmas how long I had been planning on getting a snake. I thought it started during the summer, but apparently I was thinking about them back in March! That’s pretty good, I think, taking five months to think about and plan for getting a new pet.

Tornado Alert! - 4/5/12 - I remember thinking about how vivid the dreams were, but now, as with most dreams, I barely remember them, even after reading my descriptions of them. And… oh damn! I left a parenthetical statement open! I thought I was better than that!

The Bandstand Is Quiet - 4/18/12 - For what it’s worth, I honestly do think Ryan Seacrest is a worthy person to inherit the Dick Clark legacy.

Pollen Attack - 5/10/12 - No, wasn’t allergies, since that hasn’t happened since. Not sure WHAT it was, though. Probably just a speck of dust in an aggravating part of my contact lens.

Another Sober Drunk Day - 5/16/12 - I remember this day. In all my years teaching, I have never feared for my job until this day. And it’s a horrid feeling. The next post goes into detail as of why. This post is interesting to me though for another reason; a reason that I do these reviews. I never noticed the post from the anonymous user… and now I’m horribly curious as to who that was. I have my guesses, but I won’t know.

A Bit Calmer - 5/17/12 - A parent, who was also a teacher, wanted to talk to me about The Incident. I of course couldn’t say ‘no’ and thus began a half hour of me repeatedly saying, over and over again, that I had made a bad call and I wouldn’t let it happen again. In retrospect, the call bothers me. While I had every responsibility to apologize, when you spend half an hour making me do so over and over, just what are you trying to prove? It was a sincere, heart-felt apology the first time, even the second time… but the 15th time? Not so much.

It’s Been 6 Years - 6/8/12 - Chalk it up to a few weeks between posts, but I find it interesting to go from being scared for my job to stating this was one of the best years ever. And I still tell that story about catching that one particular beach ball to my education co-workers and friends.

It Amused Me - 6/11/12 - I sometimes wonder if I have a special sense of humor because I’m an English teacher and can laugh over things like this (or misused semicolons). And by the way… I’m pretty sure that spelling error was mine in transcribing it, not the student’s.

Getting Ready Again - 6/21/12 - Oh, I love that song! One moment… There, song listened to! To address the specifics in this post… the Words With Friends tournament didn’t happen, the table-top RPG went well, and bad movie night was a blast!

Delayed Wrap-Up - 7/7/12 - This year I have to be more timely! These LJ posts about PolyCon help me remember each one. Wish I had something like this for the first several I attended! The painting is still in my room… though that does remind me that I need to contact a few people about agreements I made during and after the con.

Working Vacation - 7/14/12 - Yeah, teachers are an odd bunch, actually wanting to work when they are on vacation and then wanting to be on vacation when they are working. You know… that sounds like a lot of jobs now that I think about it.

How Did Four Hours Pass? - 7/15/12 - Oh yeah, the book! I forgot how motivated I was to make that book. Reminds me I need to start taking photos for the next one.

Just Wondering… - 7/19/12 - I’ve known LJ was dying for a long time. I guess this was me tapping the corpse with a stick and seeing a tiny twitch of movement.

Growl Hiss Spit - 7/29/12 - Man I wish I could remember what had pissed me off that day…

Why’d It Have To Be Snakes? - 8/8/12 - Yay! I got my snake! Still one of the best things I did in 2012! Hi Sly! I see you! I know you’re a bit cranky because you want to shed… ahem… back to the post… I did take a picture but never posted it. I really should.

Adventures in Snakesitting - 8/18/12 - It’s like a dozen LJ posts in one! Day 8 is definitely my favorite comment from the whole timeline.

First Days - 8/26/12 - Still the oddest first period of the first day of the trimester. And no school play that trimester, but so many came to ask about it. Made me feel good.

Proud Dad - 8/29/12 - Four posts in a row that mention the snake! Am I a little obsessed?

Simple Joys - 9/5/12 - I still occasionally turn off all the lights in the theatre just to see the tape glowing.

An Open Letter To Kelly Clarkson - 9/22/12 - Ah, my open letters. I have a few more in mind. This one, though, came from a month’s worth of planning. Literally. I had the idea for a month before writing it, but kept thinking how petty I would sound if I complained about it. Finally, after hearing that damn song for the (not-literally) millionth time, I figured out how to complain.

An Open Letter To The Guy With The Suped-Up Car - 1/1/12 - BEST POST OF 2012 - Apparently he never got my letter.

Sly Skinned - 10/7/12 - No, I won’t be posting EVERY time Sly sheds. Tote this up to “proud dad showing pictures of his kids” syndrome.

Jailbreak! - 10/15/12 - When I first read the title to this post, I thought “I don’t remember Sly escaping!” And then I read the post. Fish aren’t supposed to escape! Still one of the strangest things to happen in a while; I’m still not sure why or how.

Kick Me! - 10/28/12 - I’ve since stopped… but now I’m thinking of running my own Kickstarter for my game that I designed a few years ago. I’ll probably do it during the summer.

I’m On Facebook - 11/1/12 - I really wish I had titled this “Itsa Me, Mr. Fox!” And I’ll say it now, the Mario overalls were comfy! (Funny, I just now noticed I didn’t mention that I dressed up as Mario!)

Out Of College - 11/7/12 - It’s a big accomplishment seeing as how many people never pay them off. I have the paperwork stored away, but it’s nice to look at it every now and then to remind myself that, yes, I am making progress.

I Blame You - 11/24/12 - The mood indicator is set as “bitchy” and, yes, I clearly was being bitchy. Mind you, I still agree with what I said, but I probably could have been a bit more diplomatic in how I said it.

Hard To Move Forward - 12/18/12 - I really don’t have much more to say. Though on the last day of school before the winter break, I took a moment to tell my advanced theatre students that I was genuinely grateful to them and cared about them. Nice little sentimental moment.

Pull The Plug - 12/19/12 - Another ‘stick poke’ I guess. But it’s still mostly true, only one person of my numerous friends posts.

…And I Feel Fine! - 12/20/12 - Title was a play on the song “It’s the end of the world as we know it…” Guess all my students still needed to practice for the vocab test we had the next day. And a mention of Miss Cleo in the comments!
