I have finally planted some of the plants in the raised bed. The plan I was following called for a large contained, so last weekend we got a Jack Daniels whiskey barrel that had been cut in half. I will be traveling all of next week to Hawaii for work. This of course, means 16 hours in a plane there and an red-eye on the way back. Oh the things I do for work! Cabbage and broccoli started indoors. It was raining this morning, but was nice enough this afternoon for me to do some yardwork. There are daffodils in our front beds and all interspersed among the English ivy that has taken over the back slope of our yard. One thing about owning a house that I am going to absolutely love is the backyard. We don't have a huge backyard, but it's nothing to sneeze at either. This year I'm going to put in just one 8' x 4' raised bed. Next year will be another. I'll do one a year until I have four beds with a mixture of flowers, herbs, and vegetables in it. Three times I've tried to plant onions and three times it has failed. I'm beginning to think I just got a bad batch of seed. Oh well. Went to the farmer's market and picked up three seedlings to go in those pots instead. I now have chives, lime mint, and chocolate mint. Planted all the herbs today. Then I got the Swiss chard seeds in their pot and set up three of my smaller pots to see if I can grow onions/scallions inside. I don't have the best of luck with cold weather crops since I tend to plant them too late in the spring and fall.
