“Who were you just talking to?” Bam let the diner’s door slam shut behind him as he exited. Shoving his wallet in his back pocket, he slid up next to Ryan. The air smelled like diesel and oil… and in a strange sense like home.

Squinting his eyes into the sun, Dunn mumbled his reply. “My company… they want to know when I was sending in my logs.”

“You have to send them in?”

“Yeah… and what with being off duty when I was staying with you and your family… the paperwork was kind of late.” Dunn explained as a slight blush crept over his cheeks.

“Oh…” Bam let his eyes wander around the parking lot. It was nice to be able to stand outside without the wind kicking his ass. The heat of the sun could almost be felt on his face, but not quite. “We got a few minutes?”

“Yeah, why?”

“I was gonna call Ape.”

Without a single protest, Dunn handed him the cell. Winking at Bam, he pulled a pack of cigarettes out of his jacket. “I’m just going to take a lap around the building while you and her chat, okay?”

“Sure…”

Bam watched as Ryan’s form disappeared around the edge of the building. He smiled before taking a deep breath to steel himself for the call he was about to make.

“Margera residence…”

“Hey, Ape...”

“Bam! It’s… uh… early… for you… I mean…”

“We’re at a truck stop… we just ate… Ry’s having a smoke. Figured I’d give you a call.”

There was a long pause on the other end before April spoke again. Bam was positive that she was going to light into him about Dunn’s smoking habit or some other trivial bullshit she dreamt up overnight. “I’m sorry about yesterday, Bam. I said some things I shouldn’t have said…”

“No shit?”

“Bam!” She screeched.

“What?!”

“Don’t you have something to say?”

Letting out a long suffering sigh, Bam mumbled. “I’m sorry too.”

“What was that?” She teased.

“Don’t push it, Ape.”

April laughed out loud. The sound sent a chill down Bam’s spine. “So how are you guys doing, really?”

“Good… the wind in Kentucky is so freaking crappy… and we’re hauling this tall ass sign…”

“Language, Bam… at least while you’re talking to me.”

“…sorry.” He sighed, though his tone said otherwise.

“Go on.”

“Well, it felt like we were going to get blown off the road or some s… thing. Dunn said he’d done runs on that interstate before and it was okay… but I didn’t like it…”

“Is the weather better now?”

“Yeah, I’m standing outside talking to you actually… we’re in Missouri.”

“Already?!”

“He can drive eleven hours a day if he doesn’t have a lot of on-duty not driving time…”

“Do you help him with paperwork or… something?” She sounded almost doubtful. A small flash of anger tried to make itself known, but Bam swallowed it down.

“Actually, yeah… he’ll explain how to fill out some of the stuff that doesn’t need his signature… then we don’t have to get off the interstate for him to get it done...” Looking down to his feet, Bam lifted his toes inside of his shoes and watched the sneakers change form from the pressure… then wiggled them.

“… are you happy?”

Taking another deep breath, Bam replied. “Yeah, mom… I really am.”

“Are you being safe?”

“What…?” He almost laughed.

“Don’t play stupid with me, I wasn’t born yesterday. Answer the question.”

“Yes, Ape we’re being safe. I bought condoms and shit before we even left West Chester.”

“Brandon Cole… are you this much of a potty mouth out there on the road?”

Even though she couldn’t see him, he rolled his eyes. “Sorry…”

“And you aren’t doing anything you don’t want to do?”

“No, Ape… I’m totally doing crap I don’t want to do…” He paused for a minute. “You’re talking about sex right?”

“…yes, Bam.”

“I’m good, then…”

“Well, uh… good?” April replied awkwardly. “Do you know where you two are going after California?”

“No, he hasn’t got his next load assignment yet… he thinks we might end up in Oklahoma, Texas or Louisiana. They get a lot of loads going there, I guess. Listen, Ape… Dunn’s almost done with his cigarette… we should probably get back on the road. Love you.”

“Love you too, Bam. Say hello to Ryan for me.”

“I will.” He hung up the phone and watched the trucker approach. Ryan’s hair hung over his shoulders calm for now since the wind had died down. The sun even made it glow. Bam smiled at him. “Hey…”

“Hey…” Dunn looked him up and down. “It went better this time, I take it?”

Nodding, Bam passed him the phone before shoving his hands into his pockets.. “Uh huh… she said to say hi…”

“Tell her hi back next time you talk to her.”

“Uh, okay…”

“Ready to go?”

“Definitely.”

“God fucking damn it!” Ryan’s eyes were wide and his knuckles white as he gripped the steering wheel for dear life. The entire cab shook as he made his way to the shoulder of the road. The engine was knocking and smoking by the time the rig rumbled to a stop.

“Holy fuck, oh my god… shit, I thought we were gonna die…” Each breath coming faster than the one before, Bam pulled his knees to his chest. He’s visibly trembling. Eyes pinched shut; he tried to focus on breathing.

Dunn reached over and ran his hand over the boy’s hair. “You okay, babe?”

“No! What the hell happened?” Bam buried his face further into his knees.

“I have no fucking clue… I have to call my company so they can send out a tow truck or something though…” He sighed loud and frustrated, kicking at the floor of the cab before returning his attention to his passenger. “Are you going to be okay?”

“…yeah. Are you alright?”

“I’m fine…” Ryan forced a weary smile at the boy. He was most definitely not alright, but admitting that right now would only make things worse…
