Definitely the most famous gay man of his time. Wilde was known for his fierce wit. He was convicted of "gross indecency" in England for being a homosexual and spent 2 year doing hard labour. After his release he left England and never returned.

1920 - Charles Bukowski
American poet, short-story writer, and novelist. He is known as much for his personality as his writing, but he is an incredible writer (I'm partial to his poetry). The 1987 movie "Barfly" staring Mickey Rourke was written by Bukowski and is viewed as largely biographical.

1809 - Alfred Lord Tennyson
One of the great Romantic English poets. His great work "In Memoriam" was written for his great friend (and suspected lover) Arthur Hallam. Unfortunately, for modern scholars of gay history, both Hallam and Tennyson's families burned the majority of their correspondence.
