Some photos from the garden yesterday. I planted the lavatera thinking it was an annual but it's just stayed and bulked out so that was an unexpected bonus. (Gary has unkind thoughts about it sprawling over lawn areas he wants to mow, but it's so pretty! He'd better keep his secateurs to himself.)

Wheee! I wait all year for the ginko leaves to yellow and fall at the house on the corner. Sadly they came down overnight in the storm and so are a bit water damaged otherwise I might have bought a few buckets-full home to sprinkle around the hedgehog house.

Yesterday I went out to the local garden centre to get the hay (turned out to be straw) for the hedgehog house and also picked up a few bulbs (crocus, daffodils, and tulips) and some weed mat pegs which I will use with some netting when I divide the catmint ( Read more... )

I went off to the garden centre to buy some hay for the hedgehog house (to supplement what a friend had already donated ... it's a hedgehog mansion after all!) and for various reasons ended up coming home with barley straw. We're working pretty hard here on providing cuteness to the world. ;o) We used to have mainly blackbirds visiting our back yard but when I put up the birdfeeder the sparrows got the idea that hanging out at Jane's place was worthwhile (despite the dangers of the Evil White Cats ( Read more... )

The hedgehogs in the garden are starting to eat up large ready for their hibernation. In the New Zealand (and the local) climate they don't have a very serious hibernation ... if it's warm for a while they'll wake up and forage for food, but they certainly have long sleeps over winter ( Read more... )

Hedgehogs again! This morning I saw a young hedgehog drinking (and drinking and drinking) from the ground level bird bath just outside the office doors. He was there quite a while, lapping away.
