Billy had rarely been the kind of kid who stared about of the classroom window all morning wishing he could get out. Even after joining the Young Avengers, he'd resisted the urge to go day dreaming, saving that for after school, when he could visit any part of the world he wanted. Having that sort of freedom made staying in school easier to bear, ( Read more... )

"Flowers, Billy? I didn't realize we were that close," Jacob teased, reaching out for the proffered flower. Jacob had never been much for sweet stuff, at least not candy, but this whole island turning into a candy store was kind of cool and he was all about it.

"It tastes like...orange. And chocolate. That's insane."

"It's a million kinds of amazing, is what it is," Billy said, stepping back onto the boardwalk as he plucked off another petal. "I feel like I could eat through the entire island."

The inevitable sugar hangover could wait.

"I've never been into candy," Jacob admitted, chewing another petal thoughtfully. "But this is really, really good. It almost makes me like this holiday. Almost. I don't want that getting around."

"How can you not be into candy?" Billy asked, almost offended at the very notion. At least it was something to lead him to believe Jacob was just a little less perfect than he looked. "I don't mind the holiday, I think."

He wasn't sure how he felt about Valentine's Day, yet. On one hand, he really wanted to hate it just because he wasn't spending it with Teddy, but it had turned around and proven to be a good day, in the grand scheme of things.

Okay, it's not like Rachel's even trying to be dirty, nowadays. She's even heading off to find her boyfriend, for God's sake. But what else is a girl supposed to say other than, "I'd love to," and making no move to take the chocolate herself. Besides, his fingers are almost practically in her mouth, anyway.

Billy blinked at her answer, wondering if there was supposed to be something he should do. "Um...here," he said, holding the flower up again, feeling a little awkward about it.

She leans over just enough to take a small bite, moaning a little because that is damn good. "Thanks," she says with a grin. "This is a first. Didn't do this last year."

"Yeah," Billy said. He had the vague notion that her reaction to the candied flower was supposed to be sexy, and he could see that, but really...there wasn't a single gene in his body that was that way inclined. "I got here a few days before last Valentine's. I think I like today's better."

"For me?" Olive asks, pressing her hand to her chest with a flutter of her lashes. "Why, Billy, you shouldn't have." It's instinctive to joke, even before she's really thought about what she's saying, but she reaches for the flower a moment later. She's already been eating way more sugar than she actually could ever need, but she can't pass up the chance to try more, plucking a petal from the flower and slipping it in her mouth. "Holy crap, that's good."

"Just for you," Billy replied with a grin. He bounced on the balls of his feet at Olive's reaction, pleased that he wasn't the only one acting a little manic at everything. "Isn't it?"

"I've never been that big a fan of Valentine's Day," Olive says, "but I think I've been converted." She eats a couple more petals, bouncing a little as she grins. "Or. Well. I'm a fan of candy, really. Sugar. This flower, I am a fan of this flower." This day has climbed high up the list of things about this place she finds fascinating.

"It's like something out of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," Billy said. Didn't every kid dream of a world where everything was edible after they read that book for the first time? "Minus the oompa loompas, which I'm counting as a plus."

In any normal set of circumstances, Harry wouldn't have taken so well to another guy shoving flowers into his face. But with the island the way it was -- the brilliant way it was -- Harry did not hesitate.

"Have you tried the grass?" he asked eagerly, trading the bloke a handful of orange for a handful of green. "It's fantastic."

Taking the grass without question was a good cover up for the sudden shock of recognition. It wasn't every day a guy got to offer Harry Potter flowers, after all.

Billy covered up as quickly as he could, hoping he would just look like the awkward seventeen year old boy he was. "I've tried almost everything around," he said, but couldn't resist popping a few blades in his mouth anyway. "So far, anyway. I haven't reached the beach yet."

Harry peeled off a flower petal and popped it into his mouth, grinning as it melted on his tongue. Almost as good as Honeydukes.

"I hadn't even thought about the beach," Harry admitted, though now it seemed like the perfect place to head next. "I wonder if the tide pools have salt water taffy in them."

That sounded way more appetizing than it should have after all the candied fauna Billy had eaten. "Maybe the sand is edible, too. It's probably like...pure sugar, or something."

Strangely enough, the island's sudden, trademark makeover almost makes it easier for Buffy to ignore the date itself, and all the woe it may bring along with it. For the most part, she can't lament being alone today (and she knows she isn't, really, she has people). Given the disastrous results of her last relationship - and just about every single one before that - she's come to accept that being single is not so bad. In fact, compared to what it's like when she's in a relationship, being single is by far the better option ( ... )

"That's what the whole other 364 days of the year are for. If you were watching your figure, of course." He gave Buffy a grin. (And now that he wasn't boggling at the fact that she was the Buffy or he wasn't trying not to get his ass kicked in her Weaponry class, he could actually do that without all the accompanying awkwardness. For the most part, anyway; Billy tended to be awkward more often than not.) "I think this place has done something right, for once."

Munching now on the flower's stem, Buffy can't see any reason to argue, not when a single petal creates an explosion of taste that minutes later has yet to fade. Well done, Tabula Rasa, she thinks, well done indeed.

"Number one way to make sure no one cares your Valentine's Day decorations have nothing to do with Valentine's Day? Make them edible." Edible and delicious, not that it needs mentioning; the entire island seems aware of the fact by now. And her thoughts are otherwise occupied, busy considering whether or not it would be acceptable to lick her fingers now. "The island owed us one, anyway. Or, you know, a thousand. Who's keeping count?"

"Might be somewhere in the hundreds," Billy said. He was all for being repaid for the cruelty of having Teddy ripped away from him after so little time together here. "But we've definitely been overdue, what with a space station trying to kill us all."
