Billy had rarely been the kind of kid who stared about of the classroom window all morning wishing he could get out. Even after joining the Young Avengers, he'd resisted the urge to go day dreaming, saving that for after school, when he could visit any part of the world he wanted. Having that sort of freedom made staying in school easier to bear, ( Read more... )

Okay, it's not like Rachel's even trying to be dirty, nowadays. She's even heading off to find her boyfriend, for God's sake. But what else is a girl supposed to say other than, "I'd love to," and making no move to take the chocolate herself. Besides, his fingers are almost practically in her mouth, anyway.

Billy blinked at her answer, wondering if there was supposed to be something he should do. "Um...here," he said, holding the flower up again, feeling a little awkward about it.

She leans over just enough to take a small bite, moaning a little because that is damn good. "Thanks," she says with a grin. "This is a first. Didn't do this last year."

"Yeah," Billy said. He had the vague notion that her reaction to the candied flower was supposed to be sexy, and he could see that, but really...there wasn't a single gene in his body that was that way inclined. "I got here a few days before last Valentine's. I think I like today's better."

"Definitely," she agrees, noting his awkwardness. Which of course only made him cuter. "I'm Rachel," she says, offering a hand. "Try the rock candy before you overdose on the sugar. I'm betting we're all completely sick tomorrow."

"Billy," he said, switching the flowers over to his left hand, and wiping his right on his shorts before taking hers. "You mean rock candy as in rocks? I hadn't even thought about that, I was so focused on all the trees and stuff."

"Even the dirt," she says with a wink. "It's sugar. All kinds. White sugar, brown sugar, whatever else kinds of sugar exist in the world. Hell, if you look close, some of it's colored."

"I didn't even think about the dirt," Billy said, looking down at the ground, seriously considering it. Not the stuff he'd stepped on, of course. "It's tempting, but it'd be hard to find some that nobody's stepped on already."

Rachel bends down and runs a finger through the sand just to the right of the path and takes a lick.

"Little dirt never hurt anyone," she comments, giving him as toned down a grin as she can manage. Dude's obviously gay or blind or something.

"How long have you been on the island, Billy?"

"I'll stick with the flowers for now," Billy said, breaking the stem of one and popping it into his mouth. "I've been around...a year, actually. I just hit a year a few days ago."

"Amazing how we can be in this tiny place for that long without meeting everyone," she comments, picking up a piece of pink rock candy and handing it over. "And where did you come from? I'm from Earth. Totally normal. No magic or vampires or whatever."

"Ooh, candy," Billy said, taking the rock candy and betraying his inability to resist anything sweet- which was a problem on a day like today. He could already feel the sugar rush starting to kick in. "I'm from Earth, but probably not the same universe as yours. You know about the X-Men, or the Avengers?"

Huh. That does sound vaguely familiar. Like some nerdy comic book or something.

"It sounds kind of familiar," she hedges, not really wanting to tell him he's fake or whatever. "Are you an X-Man?"

"No, not really," Billy said, not sure how to go into that crazy family tree. "But I'm from the same universe. Superheroes, Captain America, all that craziness."
