Hi. I've been following this community for a whileand I now have a situation of my own that I need advice on. I worked 9 years at my last job and really went into the company applying for one position but getting another based on the fact that I was familiar with certain software though I was not trained/went to school for the particular position. So, I went to a vocational school, and one of the things they do for you is make you a resume. At the bottom of mine they put "references avialable upon request". What are your feelings on this? Good or bad idea? Should the references be automatically put on the resume? Will the resume go right in the trash if I don't put it on there?

I have heard that this is a common practice, but held off on doing it because I believed it might be unethical. The conventional wisdom is that this idea is " No Harm, No Foul", meaning that it can get your foot in the door, but you want to be honest about the fact that you are attempting to relocate if asked. So.. there seems to be an ongoing debate about putting an Objective statement on your resume. I never really put one on until I was prompted by a career coach to do so, however, I think this may be a dying trend, as I have heard some HR people dislike them intensely and find it to be a mark of an amateur that puts their resume at the bottom of the ( Read more... )
