Stand Alones

Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Hollow: My legs finally give out beneath me and I sink to the base. Blood and dirt mix to form gray water. I watch as it swirls down the drain. Scrub away the dirt...the smell of death. Scrub my skin raw so that I feel something...something other than rage. I was dead. I was happy. It was warm and I didn't have to worry about anything.

Lamentation: When I was stronger, I'd go downstairs, lay on the couch, and watch TV. Haven't been able to get downstairs by myself in over six months. Buffy used to bring me down there but stopped after I got out of the hospital the last time. I think she was worried she'd find me like she found Mom.

A Fortnight: [IJ] [LJ]
He tells himself he'll only taste the boy once, but one, chaste, little kiss to prove a point, to shut the little shit up, turned into another and another. Before he realizes it, his hands are buried in his fine, thick hair. [Michael/Gus]

A Simple Thing:
It had been such a simple thing, pulling this boy he loved onto the parquet floor and dancing with him.

A Woman's Worth: Craig Taylor was all the things that made Jennifer's parent swoon; he came from a good background, had a fancy degree, and was on the cusp of taking over his daddy's business when their parents introduced them at the Silas Hills Country Club.

Acceptance: Ethan knew even before Justin finished unpacking the computer that this relationship wouldn't last.

- B -

Becoming a Better Man: Before Justin Taylor came along, Brian Kinney had a list of things he'd never do. At the top or that list were: bottom, fuck someone twice, fall in love, become some lesbianic breeder, and he would never cry.

Beginnings: [IJ] [LJ]

Birthdays: [IJ] [LJ]
Birthdays in the Hyphenate House varied from celebration to celebration.

Black[IJ] [LJ]
Most people always associate black with death, darkness, and disease. Then again, Gus isn't most people.

Blackbird: [IJ] [LJ]"He was one of the few things in my life I did right," he breathed, trying and failing to keep his tears at bay. "And I loved him so fucking much." [Warning: minor character death]

- C -

Coasting: [IJ] [LJ]
A week before Gus was due to go back to the Toronto after his summer-long stint with his fathers, Brian and Justin took him to an amusement park. Not just any amusement park though... [A clipped chapter from Healing. Reads as a stand-alone.]

- D -

Dark: [IJ] [LJ]
Rape was too weak of a word to describe what was done to her -- beaten, stabbed, sodomized -- there wasn't an inch of her that wasn't black and blue or covered in gauze.

Days: [IJ] [LJ]
Summer was always JR's favorite time of the year. Endless, lazy days spent at the park with her friends, playing soccer for countless hours before collapsing on to the grass in exhaustion. While the sun bet down she and her friends would laugh, tell stories, and whisper secrets.

Dear Santa: "They're gonna come," Gus said sleepily as he tucked his bear beneath his arm. "Santa always keeps his promises."
[LJ][IJ] [Nightshade]

Death: [IJ] [LJ]
It didn't end the way they thought it would. Like it did all the previous times before.

Diamonds: [IJ][LJ]
The message had been left. Short and sweet, it said: "Get your ass to Vegas," and had been followed by a street address.

Dinner: [IJ][LJ]
"You told me to keep my elbows off the table. I did. You told me to avoid politics or religion. I did. And it's a totally valid question. I mean no straight man dresses that well..."

- E -

Earth: [IJ] [LJ]
The grass was damp and cold beneath his feet as he followed his giggling son into the backyard. Arms thrown out at his side, held tilted back, Gus ran in huge circles making plane noises that sounded more like a rickety old by-plane than the 747 the kid had flown down on.

Enemies: [IJ] [LJ]
The first time Charlie went into rehab, he was sixteen and tried to off himself in his mother's hideous bathroom. [In Healing universe. Stand-alone.]

- F -

Flashpoint: In the darkest recesses of his parent's closet, shuttered away in a wooden box, covered with half a dozen quilts and religious statues, was his father's Smith and Wesson Model 66. [On LJ]

Food: [IJ] [LJ]
Debbie's house was always filled with food--pasta and sweets and all the things his mothers either couldn't or wouldn't cook.

Friends: [IJ] [LJ]
Charlie Broussard was the lamest boy Gus had ever met. Shaggy, not-quite blond almost silver hair, gray-blue eyes, and dumb as a fence post.

Friendship: Debbie Novotny wasn't the type of woman that Jennifer Taylor socialized with. Too bright wig and acrylic nails, ever present gum snapping, witty but inappropriate t-shirts, she was the antithesis of the country club set Jennifer had over for tea twice a week.

- G -

Games: Somewhere along the line, someone should have mentioned the fact that asking Brian Kinney to babysit wasn't a wise proposition, but it was late in the day and Lindsay was desperate. [LJ]

Googled: [IJ] [LJ]
His fathers barely batted an eye when Gus started religiously printing and organizing reams worth of papers because, as mentioned before, Gus was 17 and therefore beyond all explanation.

Green: [IJ][LJ]
Gus wasn't so stupid as to believe Debbie didn't love him, but it was a slight. A reminder that he wasn't of her blood.

- H -

Hammer: Originally posted to qaf_challenges's 'what if' challenge. I chose to answer my own plot bunny - what would have happened if Justin had actually pulled the trigger. Minor character death.

He[IJ] [LJ]
Never once did she consider she'd be playing the lead in her own life-turned-melodrama, but there she was -- the scared heroine calling for help.

Home [IJ][LJ]
It was splashed all over the internet, newspapers, and new channels within hours of it happening. Massive headlines that all equated to the same thing -- a state senator was dead at the hands of his pregnant wife. That she'd done it to protect herself from her husband made it all the more sensational.

Lindsay: [IJ] [LJ]
His college advisor thought he was clearly suicidal. His therapist actually thought he was crazy (though he didn’t use those exact words), but Gus held firm to his grim determination. [Clipped from Healing. Reads as stand-alone.]

Life[IJ] [LJ]
It happened on a Wednesday.

Light: [IJ] [LJ]
In which JR gets a job the Mommies don't approve of

Little Ears:
“Did I say somethin’ wrong? Mom always tells me I shouldn’t repeat what people say ‘cause it’s rude, but Nana Deb always says ‘if you say it in front of little ears, it’s bound to be repeated.”

Lovers: [IJ] [LJ]
Gus had been the victim of family members' well meaning blind dates more times than he could count.

Lunch: [IJ][LJ]
Gus hated lunch with a fiery passion because, while he could ignore the school's peaking order at all other times of the day, it was pretty fucking prevalent who belonged to each group based on the table you sat at for lunch.

Lucky: It was one of those things that fed off of old wounds--the haves and the have nots.

- M -

Meltdown at the Big Q: [IJ] [LJ]
He was in hell. There was no other way to describe it. Surrounded by sugar-laden children, harassed looking mommies, and all the trappings of an over-commercialized nightmare that he had, in some small way, helped create, Brian very reluctantly stood holding Gus' hand as they waited to see Santa.

- N -

Never Enough: [IJ] [LJ]
There are times in his life when he realizes he's so fucking lucky for what he has--a good job, a fancy loft, friends. He's pulling in thousands a month and doing better than his dear old father could ever have hoped to make in a lifetime.

Nothing Gold Can Stay:
[soppy version]
[more realistic/angsty version]
Summary: All actions have consequences. Some are far more reaching than others. Two words changed everything: "I'm pregnant." Companion piece to He. [Gus-centered fic, Lindsay and Sam bashing. The angsty version has slight Brian bashing if you squint really hard. Pairings: Lindsay/Sam; B/J]

The One With the Asschaps: Brian, Justin, Ted, and Michael were all eating breakfast when Emmett appeared. His once fabulous tangerine shirt had been torn in three places and he had one hell of a shiner forming, but he looked happy as he breezed towards their table.

The One With the Cat: a Blue Russian cat has decided upon its new masters.

The One With the Crayon: You absently wonder if he'll even remember you in a year or two, or if you'd just become the tall man that smells like smoke and expensive aftershave that always brought new toys.

The One With the Ridiculously Large Cucumber: [IJ] [LJ]
Brian's gaze went from the newspaper article he had been reading to the permission slip and then back at his son was was sitting in his SpongBob PJs, eating Cap'n Crunch, and trying to look innocent. [How]

The One With the Road Trip: [IJ] [LJ]
It all started when Melanie won a contest for a month-long, all expenses paid cruise to the Greek Isles. [.078 Where?]

The One Where Gus Already Knows[IJ][LJ]
Gus was twelve when Mel and Lindsay sat him down to give him 'The Talk.' They only got as far as 'when two people love each other very much' when Gus started laughing. [.011 Red]

The One Where Gus Learns How to Drive[IJ] [LJ]
When Gus was sixteen, Justin taught him how to drive. They'd go out early in the morning, following the empty, curving country roads of Pennsylvania until they'd hit some little town or station or house that Justin just had to sketch [.006 Hours]

The Only One That Matters[IJ] [LJ]
Orientation, roughly translated from Bullshit College President to English, was a pathetic waste of time designed to drag a first-time freshman and his or her parents all over the fucking campus while some overly caffeinated bimbo who’s so happy to be there points at random buildings.

Orange[IJ] [LJ]
Gus eyed the pylon with growing disdain. He'd already backed over it seventy-three times that day, and he'd probably do it another hundred or so before this session was over.

Outsides[IJ] [LJ]
It wasn't long after the divorce that she and her mom starting having dinner at Deb's every Sunday. And, while the family included her, Molly couldn't help but feel like an afterthought.

The Rules: [IJ] [LJ]
The Liberty Gang take it upon themselves to teach Gus to ‘just say no’…sort of. [Written for dare_challenge]

- S -

Shuttle: Debbie remembers when her mom brought Vic home from the hospital. Red faced and screaming at the top of his lungs, he was demanding to be fed. She hated him instantly. [Deb and Vic centered]

Sketch: The moment you see the image on the screen, your breath catches. The lines are a little crude and the shading is not up to par, but you can't help but think it's the best work he's ever done...

Smell: [IJ] [LJ]
He showed up to appointment and acted like the dutiful father, the loving husband, the successful businessman, but he walked away with a bitter taste in his mouth and stinking of Lindsay's perfume.

Snow: [IJ] [LJ]
Gus had this thrall over his daddy that made him do shit he'd never ever consider under any other circumstances.

Sod's Law:
A man shouldn't know what his sister's fake tits look like. [Humor, future fic]

Sound: [IJ] [LJ]
Curled up beneath heavy covers, Daddy Bear tucked beneath his arm, he lay, listening to his father's tenored-tinged voice with rapt attention.

Spirit: [IJ] [LJ]
Gus sat in the bleachers and watched the scantly clad cheerleaders bounding across the football field wishing to the Powers that one of the little blonde-hair-out-of-a-bottle bitches would fall flat on their faces.

Star: [IJ] [LJ]
"Oh my god," Gus said, backing away. "Bad touching. Bad touching. And, by the way, you're not gay." [Humor]

Stop: When Justin begged him to stop for the second time, Brian felt his chest cease in some emotion he sure as fuck wasn't going to label.

Strangers[IJ] [LJ]
For all his mother's attempts to save him, to remind him that he'd burn in Hell, she'd never managed to find what he had -- love and acceptance. [Minor Character Death]

Stumble: Brian Kinney only has three rules when it comes to sex: don't fuck the same trick twice, don't fuck without a condom, and never fuck your friends. Pre-S1. Brian/Lindsay.

Sunrise: [IJ] [LJ]
When had this become her life?

- T -

Tall: Emmett had always believed in kismet. [Brian/Em]

Tan and Balm: [IJ] [LJ]
He swore when he was older he'd never fucking celebrate Christmas.

Teammates: [IJ] [LJ]
"I'm all ears," Gus said, smirk spreading as he closed his eyes and resumed soaking up the last of the sunlight. Beside him, he felt Charlie shift slightly to turn his head. From beneath closed lids, Gus could just imagine the terrified expression his friend would have until he confirmed that, yes, Gus was kidding about the ears. Frankly, Charlie was far too easy when he was stoned. [Humor]

Too Much: [Companion piece to A Simple Thing]
It had been hours since she'd arrived to find him sitting in the bright, sterile hallway. Blood and tears streaking his face, he looked so broken sitting there. The grief was palpable, hanging heavily in the air as strongly as the coppery scent of Justin's dried blood.

You happily lulled yourself in faux-complacency until you picked him up under a streetlamp.

War Veteran: [IJ][LJ in two posts] Sight & Heart
Stories dealing with Gus in military service

Water: [IJ] [LJ]
You always read and hear these urban legends about people instinctually knowing that their kid, their lover, their sibling is in trouble. Spike of pain through the chest, flashes of what their loved one is seeing, ghostly apparitions.

What[IJ] [LJ]
There were, Gus reflected, a lot of people in the world he couldn't fucking stand, some he barely tolerated, and only a handful he actually liked.

When[IJ][LJ]
Time has a way of slipping through your fingers. A blink of an eye, and it seems it's another birthday, another Christmas, another year.

When You Say Nothing At All:
It was said so quietly because he didn't really want to know the answer...didn't want to tempt the Fates if it weren't so.

White[IJ] [LJ]
His father's always been weird when it came to keeping mementos. Yeah, there was the stuff that his father was proud to own like sketches and paintings Justin had made that covered the walls in the loft, Brighton, and Kinnetik, but there was also the stuff he'd squirrel away in boxes so that no one would know he'd done it.

The Wisdom to Know the Difference: Just watching how Tucker comforted his mother he knew it was more than just a passing fling.

Work[IJ] [LJ]
And so, Gus resigned himself to JR's torture -- a night filled with squeeing, cooing fan girls who knew the words to every single fucking song, and, if that wasn't pathetic enough, they all sung along and waved their hands in the air like lemmings meeting their fucking Messiah.

Years[IJ] [LJ]
"Do you ever think about the future," JR asked, thumping her legs against the bus stop's bench.

Yellow[IJ] [LJ]
The bus that brought him to school was yellow.

Yes, Gus, There is a Santa Claus: [LJ][IJ]
The broom clattered out of his hand and hit the garage floor seconds before Gus took off for the house. He thundered up the stairs and threw himself onto the bed as the tears began to well in his eyes.

It couldn't be true; Santa was real, wasn't he?

Yoko Ono:
That was the moment she started thinking of him as Justin’s partner.

Star Trek: Voyager

The Act: My first and last attempt at smut. [Janeway/Chakotay]

The Bard's Tale: [Janeway/Paris] Love is stronger than any other emotion that Zeus saw fit to give to man. It can fill you, but it can also make you mad...in both senses of the word. [Winner 3rd place at 12 Moons of Jupiter Award 2000]

Confessions and Revelations My first J/P. As told in the title, this piece deals with Tom finally revealing his true feelings.

The Dance: I knew that he only did this out of obligation and out of a need to receive love from me in the only way I was willing to give it. And I...I did this so that, at least for a few hours each week, I would feel something again.

The Definition of a Man: My first week as a fish, I was convinced I'd never make it. I sent letters to my family and friends...even dear ol' dad begging to be transferred. It all fell on deaf ears. [Gapfillers for episodes 1.01-1.02 (Caretaker)]

Jefferson Square: One thousand, six hundred and forty three days. It had been one thousand, six hundred and forty three days since I had last laid eyes on Thomas Eugene Paris. The years had not been kind to him. Too much time spend drinking and doing god knows what all else had led him here. Heavy eyelids ringed with black marks, hands shaking from withdrawal from what I don't know and am afraid to ask. [Response to JuPiter Station Challenges 292, 332, and 375]

The Queen Bee: She strolls into my joint like she's a queen or something and all my new customers are falling over themselves to appear presentable to this dame. Even dear, sweet Tom. Gapfiller: 106 The Cloud.

Simply Kathryn: Kathryn finally realizes her feelings for Chakotay. A bit angsty at the beginning. [Janeway/Chakotay]

Solace: She covers my hand with hers. The soft skin wraps around my own, and I can't help but close my eyes for a second. I know that I am here only as her friend, but I drink in the moment, her scent...

Uniform: Thomas Eugene Paris would never be crisp, clean, and perfectly in line like a 'fleet uniform, and he was okay with that.

Zanja: I come here because, during the time that I spent here, I found a special kind of peace that I never found again. [Winner 2nd place 12 Moons of Jupiter Award, Sap category]

Originals

Salvation is Created: Set in the 20th century in Las Vegas, this story centers around a young girl and a medic named Steven. The story's idea is based on a long held belief of mine that you can only save yourself by taking an active role in your life. The rating of R is not for anything sensual. It is, instead, of the adult material involved in the story.

Threnody: A biographical sketch of a young woman overcoming the events in her life and learning to live, love, and trust again.

The Window: This story is about a woman waiting for her husband to return for the war. It is actually one of my first stories that is outside the norm. Originally written for and to someone I cared a great deal about, I found it lurking in the deep recesses of my email box. With only minimal cleaning up, I am posting it.
