We are working in the garden today. Rob is moving our raised beds so we can have veggies and dye plants. We are moving the beds so we can put in fruit trees next to the house - fruit and shade for the kids' bedroom is a great combo I think. My mind would not shut up last night until I could hunt down my copy of A Dyer's Garden and look up on the indigo plants. Both types I was looking into are listed in the book. Both have very similar requirements. Mostly, the main requirement is sunlight, lots of it, with a long growing season if I want it to seed in the fall, which I do. Moisture ( Read more... )

Poking around trying to figure out if indigo will grow in my area. I wonder if our hot dry summers would kill the tropical plants. I wonder if I could irrigate it enough and provide afternoon shade to let it thrive? It might be worth a test at least ( Read more... )

Our first tomato of the season, and it is large and a mutant! And to think, it was marked as a Roma tomato! That is no Roma, and I have no idea if the rest will be as large or not. Arctic winds bringing a freeze warning tonight. Rob and Roger are prepping my raised garden bed with an elevated screen to support blankets that we will put out later tonight once the winds die down. Other plants will be brought inside, and my poor birds of paradise will also be wrapped. I thought we were past freeze weather for the season in this
