[Nina looks a little pensive when the feed clicks on but not especially upset or sad. After a moment to collect her thoughts, she speaks.]I feel like I should have more to say here, but I haven't done many interesting things lately-a lot of work and studying. I guess if I talked about what I'm learning, that would mean I really know it, but does it ( Read more... )

What are you studying? I thought school didn't start yet.

You work with Terra?

It hasn't, but I've been checking a lot of books out of the library. You don't have to go to school to learn.

Well, sort of? We don't teach the same classes-he works in with the kendo groups, and I teach aikido. But it's the same place.

Oh. So you're a student like Riku. What are you reading?

But you see him- how's he doing?

The law. I was studying to be a lawyer when I went to university in my world, but I wasn't done yet, and the laws are different here. ...who's Riku?

I haven't seen him too much-our classes don't always meet at the same time. He looks like he's doing a really good job when I pass by, though. The kids love him.

Oh! I didn't know there was an Aikido instructor among us- I had someone teaching me the basic principles back in January...unfortunately, we didn't get too far beyond that.

Really? That's too bad. Aikido is very good for the body and mind!

It's a passive self-defense and prevents injury if done right, I'm told.

...What time do your classes run?

You're told right. But it really does go beyond the physical. Learning it helped me a lot when I was younger.

Right now mine are twice a week in the afternoon, but my boss is going to adjust the schedule depending on how much interest there is for the different styles and skill levels.

It is nice to see such a positive attitude in the face of what transpires here.

It's not always easy to think positive. But I don't think it would mean as much if it were.

No, it isn't. Despair is always easier than hope. It makes it that much more impressive when there are people who manage it.

There was a time when I nearly gave in to it. I don't...want that to happen again, ever.

I think I ..understand what you mean.

But how are we to trust each other if there are those among us who continue to act so brutishly, destroying without thought or regard to one's fellows?

[Experiences here have caused him many pangs. It was difficult to muster hope at times, though he was lucky in that he still had several companions who he would trust with his life.]

I don't think trusting each other just because we're newcomers is a good idea. There will always be someone to take advantage. That's something else that's probably true in every world.

But we can still give each other the chance to be trustworthy. A chance can be really important all by itself.

Yes...I suppose so. But where might you recommend we start?

One at a time, through the connections we build. I'm not sure there's any other way.

It has little to do with not liking each other. That's a very simplistic way of defining it.

Of course it is. But it's still true that whatever pushes us apart, there's always something binding us together, too. We can't change that.

And that should be seeking a way for everyone to return home. That should be what holds us all in common, more than anything else.

There are some people who have no home to return to.
