Chapter 6: 恋はルラルラ (Koi wa rura-rura)
I got to the classroom and Peach-chan and Mikado-chan greeted me.
“Yuriko-chan!” Peach-chan came towards me as I approached my own seat.
“So how are you with Ryutaro-kun?” Mikado-chan nudged me with a smug on her face.
“Eh?” I was confused by what Mikado-chan said.
“You guys are so close now, ne?” Peach-chan said, smiling at me.
“Uh, y-yeah, we’ve been spending a lot of time together.” I sheepishly said.
“You, guys, aren’t together or anything, right?” Mikado-chan asked.
“Huh?! No! Of course not! I would tell you guys if we were.” I assured them, as I took a seat.
“Right, but you really are good friends, ne?” Peach-chan said.
“Yeah, we’re just very good friends.”
During recess, I went out for awhile to the washroom. When I got back to the classroom, Peach-chan came up to me.
“Yuriko-chan, Yamada-san was looking for you.”
“Huh? Why?” I was surprised. Why would Yamada-san come all the way to our classroom to look for me?
“I don’t know, I think he just wanted to ask you something.”
“Oh… is that so?”
I wondered the whole time and didn’t realize that it was lunch time.
“Yuriko-chan?” One of my other classmates called out to me.
“Yes?”
“Morimoto-kun’s looking for you.”
“Eh? Oh!” I quickly stood up from my seat. Then I noticed Peach-chan and Mikado-chan smug at me. When I passed them by, Mikado-chan said, “Go have fun!” in a small voice that was loud enough for me to hear.
I blushed and hurriedly went away.
“Yuriko-chan!” Ryutaro-san quickly turned to me.
“Uhm…”
“You wanna have lunch with me? I found a really nice place to eat.” Ryutaro-san asked me. I was surprised by such an abrupt question.
“You mean… a place in this school?” I was confused.
“Yep, it’s nice to just sit around there.” He smiled. I wasn’t sure what to say, distracted by his smile.
“S-Sure.”
“Okay, let’s… oh! I forgot my lunch inside the classroom! I gotta go back there. You go ahead. Meet me in the bench of the school yard.” He ran off into the crowded corridor as I got my lunch bag back in the classroom and headed to the school yard.
As expected, the school yard was full of people. Many sat under the tree and the others played soccer in the field. Other benches were occupied as well. The place was filled with students’ voices the same way it was with the corridor. The trees were all red, yellow and brown and the leaves were falling off. It was pretty, but gloomy at the same time. The weather was getting quite cold. I looked up the clouds. As I watched the students chat among themselves, I heard a voice call out to me. “Yuriko-chan!”
“Oh, Ryutaro-san,”
“Let’s go!” Ryutaro-san grabbed my arm to help me stand.
“W-Where?”
“You’ll see.” He grabbed on to my arm and led me to an empty field with just full of trees and some fallen leaves. It looked like a forest. It was so quiet and there weren’t people around. It felt like I wasn’t even in school. “So how do you like it?” Ryutaro-san asked me.
“It’s nice here.” I lightly smiled.
“Glad you liked it.” He sat under one of the trees. He patted an empty space as if telling me to sit there, so I did. “It’s actually nicer here during spring.”
Then I imagined the whole place covered in cherry blossom petals and trees everywhere.
“Oh, I’m sure it’ll be so beautiful.”
“We should come here in spring.”
“Yeah, we should.” I smiled.
We chatted while slowly taking bites from our own lunch. Our conversation went smoothly. After eating, there was a silent pause for a few minutes. Then Ryutaro-san asked the most unexpected question that caught me off guard.
“Do you still like Yama-chan?” He said, looking down. I widened my eyes in astonishment.
“E-Eh?”
He looked straight at me in the eyes slowly. It made me more nervous.
“Uh… well…” I stuttered and choked on my words. Before I could even finish my sentence, Ryutaro-san slowly brought his face close to mine. I couldn’t breathe. My heart was about to explode in tension.
Then I was saved by the bell! The school bell rang. Ryutaro-san broke off.
“S-Sorry…” He pulled away. Because everything happened so fast, I froze. “Come on. We’ll be late for our classes.” Ryutaro-san quickly stood up.
“Uh… yeah…” I still couldn’t think straight.
Because of what happened during class, I couldn’t focus on anything. All I thought of was Ryutaro-san’s face just about an inch away from my face. Every time I thought about it, I felt my stomach turning around. Before I even knew it, classes were over.
I went out of the classroom and noticed it was raining outside. I stood in front of the door in the lobby. “Why did I have to leave my umbrella today?” I muttered to myself, feeling upset about my own forgetfulness. Then I noticed Yamada-san calling out to me.
“Yuriko-chan!”
“Oh, Yamada-san,” I turned to him and looked out again.
“I didn’t bring umbrella.” I sighed. Then, I noticed Yamada-san like he was looking around. Was he looking for something?
“Yuriko-chan and Yama-chan,” A voice called out behind us. It was Ryutaro-san! I wasn’t sure what to do. I was panicking in my head! “You guys don’t have umbrellas?” Ryutaro-san got his umbrella out
“N-No…”
“Yuriko-chan, why don’t we walk home together? Your house is on the way, so I can walk you home.” Ryutaro-san casually said like nothing happened earlier. Did he forget all about it? I felt more tensed.
“Really? That would be great!” I faked a smile, trying to hide my tension. Then I turned to Yamada-san. “How about you, Yamada-san?”
“Oh, he’ll be fine! Right, Yama-chan?” Ryutaro-san said casually.
“Yeah~, sure. I’ll be fine.” Yamada-san sounded a bit sarcastic.
“Okay, then.”
“Let’s go, shall we?” Ryutaro-san opened his umbrella and offered a space for me. I nodded and went next to him. “Bye, Yama-chan.” Ryutaro-san said. I smiled at Yamada-san and lightly waved at him. He lightly smiled and waved back. Why did I feel a hint of pain?
A bit bothered by Yamada-san, I snapped out when Ryutaro-san said, “About earlier, I’m… so sorry.” He was still focused on his directions as he apologized.
“I-It’s okay.” Then I remembered it again.
We just kept walking for a couple of minutes, accompanied by just the sound of the rain, our footsteps and a couple of people and cars that passed by. Just when we were on the same street of my house, Ryutaro-san said, “Yuriko-chan, I…” I stopped as he stopped walking as well.
“Uh… yes…?” I felt tensed, not sure of what he was going to say.
“I…” Then he started walking without even facing me. We finally got to the front porch of my house. “Forget it.” Ryutaro-san said in his deep voice.
“Ryutaro-san?”I was so confused and tensed. I wasn’t sure what I was feeling anymore. I froze, not even being able to bring myself to unlock the door of my house.
“I’ll just see you tomorrow. Bye, Yuriko-chan.” Ryutaro-san quickly went away, leaving me in confusion.
