Up in beautiful Mariposa for a writing retreat. Much progress so far, and yesterday even woke up to RAIN! Very brief--it was gone by six--but hey, it's a first for the year.

Some reflection on readers' investment in character. (We already know that writers are invested, even if those characters read flat and bloodless as paper to readers. How to change that?)

So we have been snowed into very pleasant surroundings. Each morning I make tea and fill the gigantic bathtub, drop some essential oils in it, and soak and sip tea. These past two mornings, this is what I look out at:

We have had such a wealth of rain, and delicious cold weather! It's been wonderful as I hunker here in the bunker trying to get this story wrapped up*. Sometimes it's been so cold here at my desk I can see my breath, and I keep fixing hot tea in order to warm my hands. And loving getting to wear long sleeves ( Read more... )

Over at Reddit/, indie author Krista Ball reread the Russ book and did a survey, commenting on the experience.

It won't surprise a lot of us, and will depress some of us, but I think it's worth reading.
