I took the dogs for a walk today, shut them back in the yard, then took off down the dirt road again, just me and my camera this time. I'd seen some things like this and I wanted pictures.

Thanks to phoenix64's link about the teeny tiny parrots, I also found out that the same expedition to Papua New Guinea has discovered a new species of rat, and it is HUGE. It's the size of one of our possums, I am not exaggerating. The greatest thing about the video on this BBC page is that you can see for yourself how unperturbed the rat is by the humans. I listened to a podcast about the last few fire spotters (lookouts) who live on mountains out west in the summer and watch for forest fires. One man took the job because he thought it would be peaceful and he could write a book, but he found that the job demanded a lot of concentration, and things in nature are always changing so much that he didn' ( Read more... )
