So I'm sitting here on the couch, minding my own business and writing, when I feel something tickling the top of my head. I reach up and it is some sort of small bug! Gorgeous day at the dog beach. it was Zoe's second visit and she loved it, fetching sticks and leaping over waves. We saw two dead sand sharks.

A magnificent heron touched down in my yard yesterday and stole my butterfly koi. Today, while I was away for the morning and the dogs were crated inside, he returned and cleaned out the pond except for one poor traumatized fish, the orange and black one I bought cheap when it was just a minnow. As I sat here, revising, I noticed a very tiny preying mantis on the edge of my computer. I got her on my finger and moved her out of the way on the table so I didn't accidentally crush her. She's taken up her position there, apparently waiting for something smaller than herself to come along. I purchased three mantis egg cases earlier this spring ( Read more... )

A big brown cricket has taken up residence on the windowsill of my office. I hope he eats ants. I haven't heard him/her sing yet.

In the past 24 hours we have had three ant incursions. They are wearing life preservers and carrying their worldly goods in tiny muddy sacks, suitcases, and wheelbarrows.
