Nethack definitely is a game of play, or knowledgeable play, or enlightened knowledgeable play!

First, a player may learn that wishes can be granted by attempting to #sit on a throne, or zap a wand of wishing, to wish for something they need.

TNNT is slaughtering my Adventurer this year.

Playing as a Lawful Dwarven Valkyrie.

On the 1st day, Nov1st, was slaughtered four or five times. All attempts the slaughter happened before the Adventurer could even convert their long sword into Excalibur!

Hoping to do better this year than I have done previously.

Feel like I've learned some more things since the last TNNT2023 by playing "nethack -X" on my local Debian Stable workstation.

After participating in TNNT2023, some thoughts.

1st is: Always use a _blessed_ scroll of genocide, never a non-blessed scroll. I should have used a blessed scroll of genocide on disenchanters. It's my guess that a monster of the disenchater family, that wasn't genocided by the non-blessed scroll, is who killed off my Adventurer during attempt six ( Read more... )

Now doing cycles of gehennom progress, then back up to the castle, then back up to the closest lawful altar, then back down.

TNNT continuing to be more difficult. Even though genocide was done for all Lich and all Disenchanter, something still cursed many of the Adventurer's items on the most recent clearing of Nasties in the 1st level of ( Read more... )

Starting from LVL1, did a full traverse down the gnome mines. At the luckstone level, encountered and dispatched a wraith, then consumed its corpse, raising the Adventurer's XL to XL21.

In order to attempt Gehennom, the Adventurer needs their best weapon class, a long sword, that is _not_ Excalibur. Reason being that wielding Excalibur in ( Read more... )

Yesterday, risked going to the deepest Quest level. Found a ring.

Then went back out of the Quest to the regular dungeon, and its level that had the quest entrance, and an altar the Adventurer had converted to Tyr (lawful). Tested the ring to confirm not cursed, then wore.

Floated! Huzzah, it's a ring of levitation.

Currently doing attempt number six of TNNT 2023.

Currently XL12, as the game materialized a wraith while the Adventurer was traversing the Oracle level.

Current strategy is "slow is fast." Just moving one Adventurer move per second or so. Also never going to a dungeon level more than the Adventurer's current XL.

I am not sure why I have not realized it before.

There are about as many Experience Levels, XLs, for an Adventurer as there are levels in the "pre-Amulet Of Yendor" main dungeon levels.

I tend to get impatient, and start to go into levels deeper than my Adventurer's current XL level. I wonder if this might be a "root cause" of why I struggle ( Read more... )
