Ooh, we've got a new pope! Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio. A 76-year-old Argentinian Jesuit. Sounds unlikely to have a particularly long reign... Apparently he was runner-up seven years ago.

I suppose it was predictable that Zimbabwe's unexpected run of form would peter out in yesterday's finalTabitha is much better; her appetite began to pick up yesterday, and is very healthy today, which was a good thing as it meant she wolfed down the first dose of antibiotics sprinkled on her food. There was an earth tremor lasting several seconds just before 1 a.m. The BBC says it was a 4.7 with an epicentre in Lincolnshire, which is 80 miles away so it must have been pretty big there. At this distance, it didn't feel quite as strong as the biggest of the Manchester tremors in October 2002, which was a 3.9, but those were local tremors ( ( Read more... )

I was stunned by a photo in Saturday's Times of the Acropolis against a pink sky. For a moment, I thought it was one of those black-and-white-plus-one-colour challenges, but then realised it was genuine; forest fires on Mount Parnitha were responsible for the red glow and for a grey film of ash covering Athens.
