I just planted: 2 white dogwoods, 2 goldenraintrees, 2 eastern redbuds, 2 sargent crabapples, 2 Washington hawthorns, and 1 crapemyrtle. They're baaaaaaaaby trees--really just sticks about a foot or so high, so I planted them in buckets for the first year or so. (Hopefully that won't prove to be a mistake. I'm aggravated with myself. I didn't check to see what was going on under the dead rosemary bush other than an accummulation of leaves, so imagine my surprise (and dismay) when I found roughly a Mt. St. Helens' worth of lava rocks, some buried more than an inch under the surface. Needless to say, I didn't use the tiller I rented before taking it ( Read more... )

I pulled up the dead rosemary bushes out of the front garden today and went out and bought many bags of soil conditioner and rented a tiller. Tomorrow, weather permitting, we'll attempt tilling the soil conditioner into the garden soil. You'll all be relieved to know that I'm 99% sure I've identified the really cool shrub in my front yard: I think it's a Spiraea, most likely a Snowmound.  Also, my randomly growing plant with the pretty yellow flower is a daffodil.  I just wanted to put everyone's mind to rest ( Read more... )
