This would be me updating. Amazing, no?
Since last we met:
The trip to the zoo was a success. I somehow managed to lose 121 (silly me for thinking that the signs saying 'Highway ends' meant it, you know, ended) and we were a little late getting there, but we found it eventually and had a great time visiting the animals. The tiger cubs from last time had grown quite a bit, and my youngest niece was quite impressed by the fact that one of the white tigers was lying so close that it felt like you could almost touch it.
Later that week, I took Will to Frisco mall and the Half Price Books in the shopping center there. We got Mom's bday presents and a few used games and more manga than we should have; Will and I laughed over the fact that the cashier at B&N thought all the manga was for him.
And! I got my tree and rose bush planted! The tree is already budding out, and the rose bush isn't dead yet! Is v. cool.
Dude, my life is boring to other people. Sorry. I'm actually having some fun with it, though. Am vastly ready for school to be over, but am enjoying the kids discovering mythology. It kind of appalls me how much they don't know. I grew up surrounded by myths, legends, fairy tales...I was an avid reader, and we had several kids' anthology-type books that had all of these and more in them. The kids are amazed that I know so much about this stuff of the top of my head, but it's just from *reading* it.
Will turned on the radio a little bit ago, and for some reason settled on some sort of "cowboy" program that's a mix of old cowboy songs, stories, and poetry. Actually kind of cool. My kid has unusual taste in music, though; he'd rather listen to bluegrass or Mexican dance music than pop/rock/etc.--although the idea of rap having cuss words delights him. Poor baby; he doesn't get to listen to much of that. Our house is too small for obnoxious music to be playing all the time.
SG1 was kind of ... um. On the one hand, *finally* not the same plot they've done six times already! And Jack! On the other hand, I don't totally buy the alternative!Daniel and alternative!Sam. Well, okay, Daniel. But Sam? The non-discovery of the Stargate led to the non-forming of her spine? I would have liked it more plot- and character-wise if they hadn't made Daniel and Sam have the same personality. Loved the cameos by Rodney and other characters...okay, mostly Rodney. It was nice to see some of the characters of the old days, though.
And also? The whole ESL scene made me cringe. One, if you're still at the 'how to introduce yourself' stage, you're not teaching them about parts of speech. Two, if you talk that fast to ESL learners, they won't understand you. Hell, I didn't understand him. Slow *down*, Daniel. Third, you'd do a whole lot more scaffolding work with pictures and vocabulary related to the weather before you'd ever expect someone to form a sentence about it.
I will spare you my rant about Hollywood's take on educating people. You're welcome.
SGA was more with the good, I thought. Mostly because Ford got to talk. Although they killed off the dark headed guy whose name I never learned! Poor guy whose name I never learned! You will be missed. Sadly, I'm still not getting the Rodney-love that everyone seems to have...I like him, but he still reminds me of all the Mary-Sueish qualities that Daniel and Sam have had over the years all shoved into one character. Which, okay, is kind of sour grapes on my part, b/c I'd really like to get more Ford characterization and background, and when it's the Rodney show, there's no time for poor Aiden.
Of course, all the Rodney-lovers on my list are happy, so not all is lost.
And finally, I got to watch Saiyuki: Reload. All y'all who said the new voice actors were awful. Dude. You were *not* kidding. I could probably live with Sanzo, Goku, and Gojyo if I had to, but Hakkai? Sounds like an uber-macho frat boy doing an offensive imitation of a gay person. Soft-spoken doesn't mean parody-simpering, people.
Oh, and non-GIP! *points to pretty JC as captured by
