CHAPTER 23 - Where There's You, There's Me

Since parting with JaeJoong earlier that morning, Yunho was finding it difficult to focus. The entire day seemed to be moving in slow motion and every appointment seemed to last for ages. He glanced at the clock that only read 6:30pm and sighed. Deciding that pouting at the time wasn’t going to get him through the rest of his day any faster, he began to read through his work emails. There were a ton of reminders from his nurses, but among them was one from the Department Chair for the Cardiology department. Expecting it to be another request to attend a conference, he opened it with low expectations.

Dr. Jung,

I would like to personally thank you for your work and continued dedication to Seoul Memorial. Your recent attendance to the Jeju conference last weekend was a great contribution to our hospitals image which in turn has promised a longer and more prosperous future for our hospital. It was with great pleasure that I announce that you have been named the new Head of the Cardiology department. There will be administrator’s meeting held in the next two weeks where we go over your duties. Congratulations.

Yunho read the email again trying to process the words. After the third time of reading it, he found it hard to breathe. Without taking his eyes off of the computer screen, he blindly felt across his desk for his cellphone. When he finally grabbed it, he glanced down at it long enough to enter JaeJoong’s number and held it up to his ear as it started to ring.

“Hello?” When JaeJoong’s smooth voice coming through from the other end, Yunho could feel his face begin to hurt from the smile he was sporting.

“Hello, love. Are you on your way home?” JaeJoong’s chuckled sweetly.

“I am. I actually was going to stop at the grocery store to pick up some things for dinner. Do you have anything in particular that you want?” JaeJoong asked and Yunho shook his head even though he couldn’t be seen.

“Whatever you make will be perfect so chose anything. My only request is that there be champagne.” Yunho couldn’t keep the excitement out of his voice as he spoke. Unable to sit, he got up from his desk and started to pace across the room.

“Champagne? What are we celebrating?” JaeJoong asked and Yunho practically squealed before he calmed himself enough to speak.

“I’ve been promoted to department chair! I just got the email and couldn’t wait until tonight to tell you.” Yunho waited patiently for JaeJoong to respond, but instead of JaeJoong’s voice, he could hear another man’s voice on the other end. Frowning, Yunho pressed the phone closer to his ear to listen. He couldn’t make out what was being said but the next thing he heard was what sounded like the phone hitting the ground.

“Jae? You still there?”  Instead of a response, there was more commotion from the other end. He continued to call JaeJoong’s name, getting louder each time until he was shouting.

“Jae! JaeJoong, answer me.  Plea-” A loud bang that sounded a lot like a gun being fired interrupted him and then it was eerily quiet. Yunho could feel the tips of his fingers get numb as the blood flow to them stopped. He was gripping the cellphone so tight he could have nearly snapped it.

Without allowing himself too much room to panic, Yunho left his office and headed to the elevators that would take him to the side of the hospital that housed the pediatrics department. When he arrived at the nurse’s station, he began to look for JaeJoong’s nurse. When he spotted the short young woman, he waved to get her attention.

“Has Dr. Kim already left for the day?” He asked her after getting her attention. She looked down at her watch and nodded.

“His last appointment was 15 minutes ago. He said he was going to go home and finish charts.” Her words had Yunho’s stomach flipping. If JaeJoong had just left, that meant when he had been on the phone with Yunho, he was in the parking garage. Without saying anything else to the confused looking nurse, Yunho turned and made his way back to the elevators so that he could head to the parking garage. When he got to the floor, he and JaeJoong had parked their cars on earlier that morning, his mouth went dry. There were several nurses and one of the ER doctors Yunho recognized surrounding JaeJoong’s car. He ran over and nearly threw up when he saw JaeJoong being lifted onto a gurney. His boyfriend was awake, but he looked confused and he was a ghostly shade of white. Yunho’s eyes dropped to where one of the nurse’s hands were pressed. Blood spread out around her hands and dripped onto the ground.

“What happened!” He managed to speak, or maybe yell, once he was close enough. The doctor looked at him briefly before gesturing to one of the male nurses to help him lift the gurney now that Jae was settled on to.

“It looks like he was robbed. He’s been shot in the abdomen, but I’ve got no idea about the damage.” The doctor informed him calmly and Yunho’s stomach rolled with nausea. JaeJoong’s glazed over eyes found him and he smiled drunkenly at Yunho. But when he opened his mouth, no words came out. Not wanting to waste any more time, Yunho took the place of the nurse who was putting pressure on JaeJoong’s womb as they all started moving to the elevators. Thankfully the Emergency Room was only one floor away from the parking garage, so the trip was quick. Yunho stared down into JaeJoong’s pale face and wanted to cry. Why was this happening? Why could they just find peace?

When they entered the loud and busy ER, the doctor called for a code blue to signal that they had a gunshot victim and soon JaeJoong was being whisked away. Yunho had to move out of the way as they raced JaeJoong into one of the patients in-take rooms. He watched from entry way as they cut JaeJoong out of his shirt and prepared to take his vitals. JaeJoong, still awake and mostly alert, was able to shake his head in response to questions, but Yunho knew that soon that would end because the shock was going to wear off. And when it did, JaeJoong was going to be in so much pain. Yunho glanced down at his blood covered hands and shirt and felt his face get hot. He was on the verge of have a full-on breakdown in the middle of the ER. Shakily, he reached into his pants pockets and with bloody fingers, he dialed the number of the one other person who could help him keep himself from losing it. It only rang for a moment before he got an answer.

“Mom? Mom, c-could you please come to the hospital?”

-

Hyun Gi angrily tossed his keys onto the table beside the entrance and kicked off his shoes. Damn, he couldn’t remember the last time he had been so furious. He snorted at that thought because that wasn’t true. He knew exactly the last time he had been this angry and it had only been a few days ago when Yunho had decided on his own that he wanted to end their relationship because he couldn’t let go of childish teenage love.

And because of that anger, Hyun Gi had gone and done two things completely out of character and gotten himself even more worked up than he wanted to be. Heaving a long sigh, he walked into his living room and stopped cold when he found that he wasn’t alone. Kang Ho Dong sat on the couch, his legs crossed at the ankles as they rested on the coffee table. He smiled at Hyun Gi.

“Finally, you’re here. I was starting to get bored. How was your day, prosecutor Song?” To an outsider, Hong Do’s casual tone may have signaled that the two of them were friends. But that was the farthest thing from the truth.

“What the hell are you doing in my apartment, Kang?” Looking unphased by the question, Hong Do simply shifted on the couch and lowered his feet to the floor.

“I was waiting for you of course. I figured you’d be in the mood to celebrate tonight.” Still glued to his position near the entrance, Hyun Gi kept his hands at his sides as Hong Do spoke.

“Why the hell would I want to celebrate? Specifically, why would I want to celebrate anything with you?” Hyun Gi asked, and Hyun Gi laughed.

“Well you see I thought about how you mentioned that I was too much of a coward to get rid of JaeJoong when we were younger on my own. You’re right, I was a coward. But I also hadn’t gotten good at developing strategies. When I found out that JaeJoong wasn’t dead, I should have stepped in a lot sooner to get rid of him on my own terms.” As Hong Do spoke, Hyun Gi could feel his heart rate triple.

“What the fuck ever, Kang. Why are you in my apartment? How the hell did you even get in here?” The other man chuckled at the question and reached in his pocket to pull out his wallet. He held it up to Hyun Gi and smiled.

“Everyone has a price even doormen at fancy condos.” Hong Do answered easily. Sighing, Hyun Gi closed his eyes.

“Why are you here?” When he opened his eyes again, the other man was looking at him curiously as if Hyun Gi was supposed to already know what was going on.

“You’re going to get your boyfriend back and my fortune and family name is safe. I took care of everything for real this time.” At Hong Do’s calm explanation, Hyun Gi felt like the ground had fallen away beneath his feet. He staggered slightly.

“W-what are you saying?” Looking impatient, Hong Do stood up and walked over to Hyun Gi without answering the question. When they were only a couple of feet between them, he leaned in and smiled.

“If he doesn’t make it through the night, I’ve got someone at the hospital to make sure that he won’t bother us ever again.” Hong Do’s words sunk into Hyun Gi like the blunt head of knife. He took a shaky step backwards.

“What have you done?” Hong Do shrugged and stuck his hands in the pockets of his suit pants.

“I had him robbed and shot. The robbery of course was to stage it. I instructed it be a close range shot so hopefully it does the trick. If I were you, I’d get to the hospital and comfort your boyfriend. He’s going to need you a lot more than he’ll need a dead person.” Hyun Gi swallowed hard and took a deep breath in through his nose. He felt like he was going to be sick.

“Do you realize what you’re saying to me, right now?” Hong Do nodded in response.

“Yes, I do. I’m telling you that I’ve solved our problem the way you asked me to.” Before Hong Do could finish, Hyun Gi was shaking his head no.

“I didn’t ask you to do anything. You provided me with the information I needed regarding JaeJoong’s mother and that’s it. Whatever the hell you’re talking about, I want no parts of so get out of my house.” Hyun Gi stepped back and gestured to the door for Hong Do to leave. The other man didn’t move.

“You can’t just get rid of me, prosecutor Song. You above anyone else should know how the law works. If I decide to go to the police and confess, then things wouldn’t look very good for you either.” Hong Do sounded like an idiot even when he thought he was being smart.

“I know more about the law and a hell of a lot of other things than you do, Kang. Now get the hell out of my apartment.” It was getting harder and harder to keep his composure, but when the big idiot finally left him alone, he didn’t feel any calmer.

Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out his cellphone and stared at the screen. He needed to call Yunho and let him know what JaeJoong’s brother had done. But not without revealing exactly how he knew that. He slowly put his phone back into his pocket and went over to couch and sat down. For the first time in his life, he bowed his head and said a prayer. JaeJoong needed to survive this so that Hyun Gi could reset this mess before it ends ruining not just Yunho, but him as well.

-

Yunho stared down at the blood that had dried on his hands trying to figure out how the hell his wonderful morning had led into such a hellish night. JaeJoong had been warm and perfect in his arms earlier that day and now he was laying on cold table in the operating room fighting for his life. The way life seemed to contrast so quickly around them, the push and pull, was maddening. All he wanted was for them to have a chance at being happy.

“Yunho, honey?” The softness of his mother’s voice broke through his thoughts causing him to look up. She hovered over him with a worried look on her face.

“Hi mom.” She leaned over and kissed his forehead.

“Sweetie, you need to go get cleaned up. Do you have a change of clothes in your office?” Her concerned voice cracked the remaining pieces of his armor. He leaned into her and pushed his face into her stomach. Her arms wrapped around him immediately.

“Mom, it was just like that day. He was bleeding and I couldn’t get it to stop. And now he’s hurt again, and I don’t know if he’s going to make it this time.” He knew he was babbling, but every last pint up emotion and worry was finally surfacing. She held him tight and hushed him until he was calm enough to take deep breaths. She sat down next to him and gripped his arm.

“Honey, Jae is a fighter. He is going to be okay. You have to believe that. You guys didn’t get brought back together just so that you could be separated again.” She soothed as she gripped his arm harder for comfort. For a moment he allowed himself a moment of calm. His mother was right. JaeJoong would make it through this and when he did, Yunho would be right here.

Another thirty minutes went by before the sliding doors to the operating room opened. The young surgeon came out and bowed to Yunho and his mother.

“Dr. Kim is out of surgery and is in recovery. The bullet missed all of his major arteries, but he still lost a lot of blood. He’s in a medically induced coma, but we’re hopeful he will make a full recovery.” All Yunho could do in response was nod. He was too breathless to speak. When the surgeon had gone and left them alone again, Yunho’s mother turned her radiant smile on him. Blinking away some tears that threatened to fall, he smiled back.

….

The hospital room was quiet with the exception of beeping machines that JaeJoong was attached too. Yunho closed the hospital door gently behind him before making his way over to stand next to the bed. JaeJoong looked peaceful and not nearly as he had earlier. Yunho leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to JaeJoong’s cheek, relieved to feel the warmth of JaeJoong’s skin against his lips.

Out of habit, Yunho checked the readings on the machines and reviewed the vitals that were taken down in JaeJoong’s chart. When he was satisfied, he pulled a chair up to sit down next to the bed. Right before he could settle, JaeJoong’s head shifted on the pillow and he looked at Yunho with sleepy eyes. Yunho bit back a cry of relief.

“Has anyone told you that you have the most beautiful brown eyes in the entire world?” At his words, JaeJoong’s lips curled up in a tiny smile.

“No, but I could get behind hearing it more often.” He teased making Yunho laugh. He leaned over and pressed a kiss to JaeJoong’s up turned mouth.

“How are you feeling?” Yunho asked and JaeJoong grunted and shifted slightly in bed.

“Like shit. Did that guy really shoot me?” Yunho frowned and nodded.

“How much do you remember?” JaeJoong frowned at the question.

“All of it. I was on the phone with you and then someone was behind me and shoving something hard into my side. I did everything he told me to do, but then he still shot me. I-I couldn’t believe it was happening.” When he finished, he placed his hand on his side and grimaced.

“Did you recognize him?” Yunho asked and JaeJoong shook his head no.

“He was wearing a mask. But what was strange about the whole thing was what happened in my office before that. Hyun Gi came to see me.” Yunho blinked dumbly, trying to process what JaeJong had just said.

“Hyun Gi came to see you? What did he say? Damn, it JaeJoong you should have stopped my babbling about the department head thing and told me-” JaeJoong raised his hand to interrupt Yunho.

“Yunho, stop it. It wasn’t that big of a deal. He made some empty treats about me needed to decide between you or my medical license. He’s bitter and hurting, but I don’t think he wants me dead. It would be harder to make my life hell if I were.” Yunho tried to keep his emotions in check as he listened to JaeJoong, but he was fuming. No, Hyun Gi wouldn’t be so thick as to do something so clearly illegal, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t capable.

“He shouldn’t have come near you and said anything let alone threaten you. Damn it, this has become such a mess.” And he was responsible for it. He bit his lip and looked down at the hand that covered JaeJoong’s. JaeJoong turned his palm over so that they could linked fingers. Yunho looked up and his eyes connected with JaeJoong’s.

“Do you regret it?” He asked and Yunho shook his head no.

“Not for a moment. I love you, Kim JaeJoong.” JaeJoong smiled in response and lifted their joined hands so that he could kiss the back of Yunho’s.

“Good. Because I love you too, Jung Yunho.” Before Yunho could say anything else, his cellphone vibrated in his pocket. Guessing it was his mother wondering about Jae, he pulled it out. But the name that flashed across the screen wasn’t his mother’s. It was Hyun Gi.

“Why the hell would he be calling me right now?” JaeJoong raised his eyebrows at Yunho.

“Hyun Gi?” He asked and Yunho nodded. He pressed ‘ignore’ on the call and shoved it into his pocket.

“Even though I don’t want to believe it, I find it hard believe that he doesn’t know something about why this happened to you. It’s just too much to be considered a coincidence.” He could feel his anger rise as he spoke, but he calmed when he looked at JaeJoong. He could have lost JaeJoong again, and this time it would have been forever. But he hadn’t and he needed to focus more on that than his anger. His best efforts to remain calm faltered when his phone rang again, and he found that it was another call from Hyun Gi. Sighing, he went to press the ignore button again, but stopped when JaeJoong grabbed his hand.

“He probably knows something, Yun. Go talk to him.” JaeJoong unlinked their fingers and closed their eyes. “I’m going to take a nap.” He said with a light tone that would have made Yunho laugh had it been another time. Not wanting to argue, Yunho got up and leaned over to kiss JaeJoong one more time before leaving the room. His phone continued to buzz in his hand as he made his way further away from JaeJoong’s room. By the time he got to the end of the hall, the call had been sent to voicemail.

Unlocking it, he went to missed calls and was about to re-dial Hyun Gi’s number when he heard his name being called. He looked up and saw Hyun Gi standing at the other end of the hall, clutching his cellphone. His normal cool-guy facade was gone and in its place was the face of a man who was worried and had exhausted. For a moment, it felt like Yunho was looking at a stranger.

“Y-Yunho. Is JaeJoong okay?” Hyun Gi asked as he rushed down the hall to meet Yunho. Yunho frowned and tilted his head.

“How did you know Jae was hurt?” In response, Hyun Gi’s worry creased forehead gained yet another crease.

“I…I know who had this done to him. But I need you to know that this wasn’t me. It wasn’t my idea. No matter how much I’m hurting, I wouldn’t do this, Yunho.” Hyun Gi started to explain with a shaky and hoarse voice. Yunho reached out and grabbed Hyun Gi by the shoulders and shook him.

“Don’t give me this broken lamb bullshit, Hyun. You’re not weak or stupid. Who the hell did you get involved with that they somehow turned your school bully plans and turned it into attempted murder?” Yunho wasn’t going to beat around the bushes here. He knew that the way their relationship had ended wasn’t ideal and he still felt responsible. But there was nothing so bad that someone deserved to have their lives threatened. Hyun Gi shook his head no, still looking very unlike himself.

“Kang Ho Dong had someone hurt JaeJoong and framed it to look like a robbery. I went to him to find out more about JaeJoong’s mother, but I never wanted this. That fucking idiot has wanted JaeJoong dead since you guys were teens. I…I should have never gone to him.” Hyun Gi looked like he had confessed his every sin in just one breath. He sagged pathetically in Yunho’s grip. Yunho released him, his mind racing. Kang Ho Dong, JaeJoong’s half-brother, was the one behind this. He had always been. The night JaeJoong’s brakes had failed hadn’t been an accident.

“Do you understand that you have risked your career as a prosecutor and your future consideration for judge because of your petty need to get back at me?” He was sad as he said it because he never thought he’d ever have a conversation like this with anyone, let alone with Hyun Gi. The other man nodded and looked down at the floor between them.

“I’m sorry, Yunho. I just didn’t want to give up. I wanted to make you hurt the way you’ve hurt me.” Hyun Gi’s sad eyes were a peak into a man that Yunho had never seen in all their years together. It was overwhelming because he truly had never known Hyun Gi.

“I will always be sorry for how wrong I was for not being honest with you. But it’s going to be very hard to forgive you for this.” Hyun Gi met Yunho’s eyes brefly before looking away.

“I understand. I…I’m going to go. When JaeJoong is better, tell him to stop by and grab the records regarding his car accident. I’ll handle the rest.” Without waiting for Yunho to respond, Hyun Gi turned and left. When he was out of view, Yunho turned and began to head back towards JaeJoong’s room. When he entered the room and found JaeJoong fast asleep, the emptiness left behind by the grief of final goodbyes was lessened and replaced with one of joy and contentment.

1 month later…

JaeJoong walked through the double doors that lead to his late father’s top business headquarters. He had only ever been in the building a handful of times growing up, but everything looked the same with the exception of a few modern touches.

He strolled up to the security gates and the guard manning them gave him a look.

“Can I help you?”

“I need to see Kang Hong Do.” The guard snorted.

“Everyone “needs” to see CEO Kang. Is he expecting you?” Not the least bit intimidated, JaeJoong folded his arms across his chest.

“I’m a little late, but he’s definitely got time to see his younger brother.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out his ID entrance badge from when he was still 17, right before he changed his last name. The guard looked at him and the ID and then back at him again. After a few moments he scanned his own badge and let JaeJoong through.

He took the elevator up to his father’s old office and ignored the front desk attendant as he continued down the hall. When he got to the office, he pushed open the door with a little more force that was probably needed. He stormed across the room and banged his hands hard on Hong Do’s desk, to get his attention. The man looked up at JaeJoong, about to say something, but closed his mouth when he processed who he was seeing. JaeJoong smirked.

“Hey bro. Got a second?” JaeJoong asked smugly. Hong Do pushed away from his desk, looking at JaeJoong as if he had seen a ghost.

“W-what are you doing here?” JaeJoong laughed at Hong Do’s stuttered question. Hong Do never stuttered. It was quite the surprise to see that something’s had changed with time.

“I think what you would like to know is how I got here.” He sat on the desk. “Well you see, I managed to get all 17 years of my lost memory back.” He shook his head. “Imagine the surprise when I remembered how you used to beat the shit out of me, and your evil mother did nothing to stop you.” He gave Hong Do a sharp look.

“I also remember how bitter you were about dad wanting me to take over his place. So, you decided something had to be done to prevent that.” The conversation he had with the detective that handled his case was still fresh in his mind. He had shown JaeJoong pictures of his totaled car and the conclusion of the investigation had shown foul play; someone had cut his brakes. Of course, that part had been filed away after the investigator received reports from a hire up to stop searching for the culprit. It was a decision no doubt fueled by money.

All of this information had been locked away in the prosecutor’s office and would have remained that way had it not been for Hyun Gi’s request that he pick up the files when he was out of the hospital. Though it shouldn’t have come as surprise that he shared blood with such an evil person like Hong Do, he had still needed 2 weeks to work up the courage to be here today.

“I don’t know where the hell you get off acting so high and mighty, but you’ve got about 10 seconds to get out of my office.” Hong Do threatened, seemingly back to his normal, demanding self. JaeJoong, unfazed by the threat, didn’t move.

“Actually, I don’t have to go anywhere.” He kicked a pencil cup off of the desk. “This is technically my office.” He said mildly.  Hong Do looked enraged as he slammed his hands down onto the hard, mahogany wood desk.

“You’re really out of your mind!” JaeJoong laughed in response.

“Yeah, you wish,” he leaned forward into Hong Do’s personal space. “Listen: in about 10 minutes, the Seoul prosecutor’s office is going to arrive and do a very intense audit and present you with a warrant for your arrest. Then at the police station you’re going to be presented with the original copy of dad’s will which will be compared to the one you and your mother forged.” Just as he finished speaking, the doors swung open and a raid of men and women with file boxes stormed in. JaeJoong pretended to be surprised as he watched the swarm of people fill the office.

“OH! Looks like they’re early.” He said, gleefully. Hong Do just stared back at him, havening gone deathly pale.

JaeJoong stood up and started walking towards the door, but before leaving he turned back to look at Hong Do one more time. All the memories of the beatings and the pain and the emotional scaring were almost too much to stand. But now, instead of having to use his fists to survive, he had the truth.

“I win, hyung.” The sound of the door shutting behind him was the perfect ending to a moment that was years in the making. Now, the only thing he needed to be concerned about was his future and not his past.

-

Yunho put the final touches on dinner and carefully removed his apron. After 3 failed attempts at making the same ravioli, he had successfully completed a meal edible and plentiful enough for 2 people. With a quick glance down at his watch, he found that it was almost time for JaeJoong to get home.

Hurriedly, he headed out to the living room and turned on the electric fire place and started the playlist on his iPod that was filled with some of JaeJoong’s favorite classical music pieces. With He took a chance to make sure that everything in his apartment looked clean and put together. Then he silently berated himself for getting so worked up. JaeJoong had spent a lot of time at Yunho’s apartment since getting out of the hospital, so it wasn’t like it was something new. But tonight, was different.

The doorbell rang and Yunho jumped slightly as if he wasn’t expecting it. Sighing, he headed over and pressed the button to let JaeJoong gain access to the elevators. A few minutes later, there was a knock on the door. When Yunho opened it, his breath caught in his throat. JaeJoong looked handsome, like he always did, but for some reason, he looked especially beautiful tonight. He had taken to wearing his reading glasses more often so tonight he wore them and they looked smart paired with his black paints, dark red, long-sleeved shirt. His smile lit up his face as he stepped over the threshold and into Yunho’s open arms.

“Hi you.” JaeJoong greeted him as they hugged Yunho squeezed him tightly.

“Hey yourself, gorgeous.” He kissed the top of JaeJoong’s head before finally releasing him and leading the other man into the apartment. JaeJoong moaned happily.

“I smell ravioli. Did someone ace their math test?” JaeJoong teased and Yunho rolled his eyes and swatted him on the butt playfully.

“Not quite, smart ass. I just figured that tonight would be a good night to celebrate me becoming a department head.” Yunho explained and JaeJoong smiled.

“Tonight, would be a great night. Especially when I know the best place to go after dinner to get a delicious chocolate cake that’s made especially for you.” JaeJoong leaned into Yunho and wrapped his arms around his neck. Yunho chuckled and held him a little tighter.

“Well, if it happens to be the same cake I heard you talking about on the phone with my mother last night, then we should probably skip dinner and get over there.” He could help but laugh when JaeJoong pouted. He was so painfully adorable.

“You’re no fun! I’m going to go eat ravioli.” JaeJoong huffed and stormed into the kitchen. Yunho chuckled as he followed behind him. JaeJoong seated himself at the table in front of one of the plates of food and even though he tried to remain grumpy, it was broken when he bit down into the first bite of the stuffed pasta. He closed his eyes and moaned with pleasure. Enjoying JaeJoong’s satisfied face, he took his place across from JaeJoong and began to eat.

When they finished, JaeJoong leaned back into his chair and sighed contentedly and Yunho chuckled.

“Full?” He asked and JaeJoong nodded and reached for his napkin.

“So full but so happy…wait. What is this?” A key had fallen from JaeJoong’s napkin and attached to it was a tiny piece of paper. Nervous, Yunho watched as JaeJoong picked up the key and read the note on the key. When he finished, JaeJoong met Yunho’s gaze.

“Time hasn’t been kind to us and so I would hate to act ungrateful by wasting any more of it. So, do you think you’d like to move in with me? You know, to make catching up easier.” He said the last bit teasingly. But JaeJoong’s serious gaze never faltered. Yunho shifted as his nerves began to build.

“You are such a damn dork. How could I love someone so dorky?” JaeJoong said as he wiped quickly at his face. Yunho chuckled, his nerves starting to dissipate.

“So is that a yes, or…” He trailed off and JaeJoong got up and threw himself into Yunho’s lap. He wrapped his arms around Yunho’s neck and squeezed.

“Of course, I’m going to move in with you, you idiot,” He leaned back and cupped Yunho’s face in his hands. “I can’t imagine another place I’ve ever needed to be more than with you.” Yunho reached out and wrapped his arms JaeJoong’s waist.

“I love you, Jae.” He said softly as JaeJoong leaned his forehead against Yunho’s

“I love too, Yun.” JaeJoong whispered against his lips as their mouths came together in a gentle kiss. When they parted, Yunho felt like everything, 12 years later, had finally come together. After all that they had been through, it would definitely stand to reason that their fate, the way their souls were connected, was nothing like a red string. It was much sturdier than that. Their love, their connection, was precise and timely. It was like…

“You’re my boomerang.” Yunho said breaking the silence. JaeJoong leaned back and gave him a confused look.

“Huh?” JaeJoong asked and Yunho just shook his head.

“Nothing.” JaeJoong smiled and rolled his eyes before leaning down to seal his mouth to Yunho’s in another kiss.

No matter how far apart life threw them, they still found their way back to each. No, a red string had nothing on their story. They were boomerang’s.

THE END

....

A/N: One internet outage later and we have arrived at the end. I'm kind of speechless right now because I can't believe that the first chaptered fic I've written in like 4 years is finally done. I'm overwhelmed with how wonderful and kind all of you have been as readers and friends. It brings me so much happiness to know that the fandom is still out there alive and wanting to read fics about our favorite guys. I want to thank everyone for their continued show of support and I hope that we have many many more years of fandom left under our belts. I'm certainly not throwing in the towel just yet. Anyway, I want to thank you all again for being so great and wonderful. I truly can't wait to see what you guys think of my next YunJae fic(that I'm already working on!). I'll be taking a short break while I finish it so that it's already complete when I upload it. Can't wait to see you all again soon! Love you much!
