CHAPTER 4 - You
10 Years Later
Yunho bounced his knee impatiently as he watched his coach talk to the referee. Another bogus call was made, hitting Yunho with his second yellow card of the night. He was currently benched until it was decided whether or not the call was fair.
"I didn't even touch him. Fuck!" Junsu leaned back on the bench, just as angry. He had been saddled with a red card at the start of the game for tripping a player by accident. He, along side Yunho, were two of their teams best players. It was clear that ref knew that and was barely even trying to hide his bias for the other team.
A few moments later, his coach returned to the bench and patted Yunho on the shoulder.
"Get back in there, but be careful; that asshole is watching you." Yunho nodded and ran out on to the field to replace one of their mid level players. The opposite team was good, but their crutch was definitely the referee. Offside, the ball was kicked to Yunho and he began a fast dribble down the soccer field. A player from the opposing team tried to block him, but Yunho faked a left and kicked the ball behind him on right before making his way around.
The crowed was loud and pulsing in his ears, making him feel a rush that only came when he was out on the field. It washed over him and made him forget about all of the exams, the choices about what colleges to go to, and the girls he worked hard to avoid.
A clear path up the field was in sight. He made eye contact with one of his teammates and passed it to him as he weaved around players trying to get in his way. Finally, when a angle shot on the goalie's weak side got big enough, he was ready.
"I'm open!" The ball flew back to him and he was ready to kick when the ball was suddenly gone. He looked up and found the other teams player making a fast switch back down to the other end of the field. Number 33, Kim. Yunho turned and made his way back down the field, in hot pursuit. His team members were there, blocking the other teams players the best they could but they were fast and defending number 33 with impressive agility.
Yunho was within arms reach when 33 stopped like a suddenly braking car and made a shot directly between the raised arms of the goalie. As if he had stopped with too much force, he fell to the ground, taking Yunho, who was too close behind him, down with him. The ball made a clean swish at the back of the goal and the crowed roared while the home team booed. The game was over, 2 to 1. Yunho pushed the other player off of him in anger. 33 rolled over, laughing. The bangs of his light brown hair were pulled up with a hair tie to keep it off his forehead. He made eye contact with Yunho and immediately stopped laughing. Yunho scowled.
"What!" Number 33 pushed himself up and then reached down, offering to help Yunho stand up.
"I threw on the breaks really hard. Didn't mean to take you with me." Jaw clenched, Yunho took his hand and got to his feet.
"Yeah, well that's how you win the game, so it's whatever." He knew he was probably being a sore loser, but the time he spent on the bench could have been critical to at least tying the game and it really pissed him off. "That referee must be fucking one of your coaches or something." 33 raised his eyebrows.
"Huh. That didn't occur to me. But come to think of it, your coach was probably fucking the ref from our game last week too; the one where you guys won 3 to 2." The look in his eyes felt like a knife. "Don't act like a prick just because you lost. It's very unattractive." With that, the other player turned and headed for the line up to end the game with handshakes. 33 took his spot at the front of his teams line, signaling his status as captain. Yunho, feeling like jerk of the year, took the same spot on his team. Embarrassed, he shook hands with the other captain.
"Good game." The opposing teams captain grunted and barely looked at Yunho. Later in the locker room, Yunho pulled his sweat soaked jersey off and tossed it on the floor. Junsu came up to him and bumped his shoulder with his.
"You really almost had it. That kid is fucking fast." Yunho shrugged, still replaying the conversation in his head. He couldn't get why he couldn't just let it go. It wasn’t like he hadn't lost a game before. But for some reason, it really stung when it came down to him being the reason. Especially because he was the captain.
"Yeah he is." Yunho was about to slip off his shorts when something occurred to him. "Hey, did we really play them last week?" Junsu kicked off his cleats and let out a long groan of satisfaction.
"Yep. Kim wasn't playing though. He was benched with a shoulder injury." Yunho tried to remember the game and everyone who was on the other teams bench. Really thinking about it, he kind of remembered someone that looked like Kim sitting in warm-up gear.
"Ah, okay. That was a good game too. We barely pulled it off. " Junsu nodded as he grabbed his shower stuff.
"It was an excellent game. Kim is a fucking boss captain." He smirked at Yunho. "Well, not as boss as you, cap." Yunho rolled his eyes.
"Whatever." Exhausted, Yunho grabbed his things and started to get dressed. He wanted to shower at home so he put on his sweatpants and t-shirt and headed out. It had been a long day and it was time to end it. The school parking lot was finally clearing out as all the fans and members of the other team were making their way home.
Yunho pressed the alarm button on his key twice making his black Toyota's lights flash from the other side of the lot. Parked next to him was a black BMW and leaning against it was Team captain Kim. When he saw Yunho he waved.
"Hi."
"Hey." Kim smiled. "I know you're probably sick of my face tonight, but I had a quick question." Yunho opened the door of his car and threw his bag and jacket into the passengers seat.
"What's up?" The other boy tilted his head.
"What's your first name?" Yunho frowned.
"Yunho." His eyes got big for a moment before they returned to their normal size.
"Ah. Well, thanks. Have a good night." He turned and quickly got into his own car. Before he could close it, Yunho grabbed the door.
"What's yours?" Kim looked up at him for a moment before looking away and started his car.
"JaeJoong." Yunho let go of the car door like it had burned him and JaeJoong shut it and sped out of the parking lot. His heart was pounding so hard in his ears it felt like it was going to make him go deaf. Numbly, he got in his car and drove home. His mom's car was in the drive way and he took a moment to be grateful that her shift was over before dawn.
He unlocked the front door and kicked off his shoes as soon as it was closed behind him. The TV was blaring the nightly news which meant his mom was in the kitchen. She turned and greeted him with a smile.
"Welcome home! How was your game?" Yunho walked over to the sink and kissed his mom on the cheek before washing his hands at the sink. He dried them on his shirt and sat down at the table.
"We lost, but it was a good game. Are you just getting home?" She nodded as she continued to chop vegetables.
"Yeah, but I'll have dinner ready soon." She looked back at him for a moment as she paused her chopping. "This other team must of been good then." Yunho nodded.
"One of the best. I didn't remember this, but we played them last week and we won." More of the details of last weeks game came flooding back and he for sure remembered seeing JaeJoong and hearing him cheer on his team.
"Mom?" Son Yee dumped the chopped vegetables into the boiling pot of water.
"Yeah, sweetie?"
"Do you remember the last name of my friend JaeJoong from camp?" His mom turned to him, her expression much somber than Yunho is used to her wearing.
"Kang. Kang JaeJoong." Yunho dropped his head disappointed.
"Oh." Son Yee stepped away from the stove and sat at the table with Yunho.
"Why do you ask?" He shook his head, trying to shake off his disappointment.
"The captain on the other team tonight is named JaeJoong, but his last name is Kim. JaeJoong isn't a name I hear a lot." And he was hoping, albeit uselessly, that it was his JaeJoong.
"It isn't a very common name, no." Yunho sighed and stood up.
"Do you think I can grab a quick shower before dinner is ready?" Son Yee nodded and patted his hand.
"It'll be hot and ready to eat when you're done." He smiled and left the kitchen and headed up to his room. He took off all his clothes and was about to grab a new pair of boxers when he remembered something. Walking over to his desk, he pulled open the first drawer. Underneath a pile of birthday cards there was folded piece of paper that was nearly falling a part. Unfolding it, he read it aloud.
"You're my friend and my family. I love you." He smiled and brought the piece of paper to his lips, like he had done so many times before, and kissed it. It had been a long time since he had allowed himself to think about JaeJoong, but now that he did he couldn't help but wonder if he was okay. What was he doing? Was he happy? Was he fucking gorgeous by now? Kim JaeJoong flashed in his head and his stomach felt weird. Tall, wide shoulders, crazy long legs. He was stunning, and clearly, very kind. There was no denying that there had been instant attraction on his part.
Shaking his head, he folded the paper again and put it back in it's place. He left the room and headed into the bathroom. He was going to need a really cold shower.
-
JaeJoong turned over in bed, and stared up at the ceiling. He thought listening to music would distract him from all the feelings that were fighting to get out of him.
"Fuck." He had met Jung Yunho again after all these years. His best friend and his only friend when he was younger. He still remembered the day his step mother forced his nanny to change her phone number and had Yunho's number blocked so that he couldn't call the house either. The memory of how he cried and begged them not to delete his Skype account was still fresh.
This family had ruined his life from the moment they met. But they were experts at making it seem like they loved him and treated him like he was truly one of their own. The nicest clothes. The most prestigious of educations. The fanciest cars. But it was all an elaborate rouge so no one could see in and find the truth. And the truth was he has been getting his ass kicked nearly everyday since he was 5.
His half brother, Hong Do beat the crap out him just because he could. And even though they were the same height now, he still got the best of JaeJoong sometimes. But JaeJoong didn't back down anymore. When Hong Do started a fight, JaeJoong scrapped with him until they were both bleeding. But last week he lost and ended up getting his shoulder popped out of the socket.
A loud crash came from the hallway followed by a groan. JaeJoong sat up in bed and listened again. It was quiet then something made of glass collided with his bedroom door and shattered. The door handle jiggled.
"Open this fucking door, Jae." JaeJoong got out of bed and ran to his desk. He opened the top drawer and pulled out a mouth guard and stuffed in his pocket. The handle wiggled harder and this time it gave way. Standing in the door way, Hong Do stood, looking furious.
"What's your problem, Hong Do?" His half brother staggered into the room.
"You, as usual. You know dad is going to be home this week. I thought I made it clear that me and mom didn't want you home." JaeJoong gripped the mouth guard in his pocket.
"I haven't seen Dad in months. I just want to eat dinner with him. I'll leave after." Hong Do laughed.
"And what makes you think he wants to eat dinner with you?" JaeJoong smirked.
"Cause I'm the son of the woman he truly loved. That's why." JaeJoong slipped the guard into his mouth right before Hong Do's fist hit him in it. JaeJoong was down for a second before he was diving at Hong Do.
He managed to get his arm around his neck in a choke hold and brought him down till they were both on their knees. Just a little tighter and he would pass out. Before he could, Hong Do elbowed in the stomach and got on top of him. With one hand he held one of JaeJoong's arms above his head and landed blow after blow on JaeJoong's face.
He guessed he was going to lose this one tonight.
