Chapter 1 - Wednesday
“Mr. Jung? Mr. Jung can you hear me? If you can hear me, please open your eyes.”
If my fucking eyelids didn’t weigh a hundred pounds, I’d be happy to oblige. Yunho thought to himself. This feeling, the heaviness, the irritating ache at the base of his scull, was familiar to Yunho. He had gotten drunk. No. He had gotten blasted. Shit.
“Mr. Jung I know you’re awake now. Please open your eyes.” The disembodied voice says again, this time sounding like it was running on low patience. Where the hell was he? Shit. Had he passed out at work again? Fuck.
“Yeah, I’m awake. Can you like turn off the lights? It’s too bright...what the hell?” When Yunho tried to raise his arm to cover his face, he found that he couldn’t. Finally, much to the protest of his pounding head, he opened his eyes and looked down at his arms. They were...handcuffed? And he was in a hospital bed. Fuucckkk.
“Mr. Jung, the police would like to speak to you now that you’re awake.” The same voice, Yunho could now see, belonged to a tall female nurse. She looked tired, like she had been working 13 hours with no break. Her long black hair was pulled up in a high bun on top of her head and her brows were knitted in impatience. Yunho swallowed, his mouth suddenly too dry. And nasty. Shit, he had drank tequila. He hated tequila! It always got him into trouble. Ha. Clearly.
“I uh...why am I handcuffed?” The nurse glanced up at him from her clip board long enough to give Yunho a look that said he had asked a dumb question.
“Protocol.” She answered simply before turning away and opening the hospital door. The next person to enter was a short balding man wearing a trench coat. He cocked his head and took a long hard look at Yunho.
“Mr. Jung, I’m officer Kang. Do you know why you’re here?” Officer Kang asked in a gravely voice. Yunho would have liked to say that he knew the answer to that question but right now, the inside of his mouth felt like it was covered in cotton balls and his head hurt like a bitch. Exhausted, he settled for shaking his head no. Officer Kang clicked his tongue in disapproval before reaching into his coat and returning with a small notepad and pen.
“At approximately 2:30 am, we received a 911 call reporting that a man in his early 30s had just crashed his car into a street lamp. It appeared that no one else was involved in the crash. Just an unsuspecting street lamp.” When he was done speaking, Officer Kang flipped the notepad shut with a audible snap and tucked it back into his pocket. Yunho let out a low moan and closed his eyes.
Like a ton a bricks, the memories of that night started to flood back in. The first 2 drinks started in his office when his secretary announced he had seen his last appointment of the day. The next 3 came in his coworkers office as they celebrated the end to a another big day. They had made so much money that week. And it was only Wednesday.
Then someone had said they were going to a bar. Which turned into 3 bars and a night club. And then Yunho remembered that it was only Wednesday and he needed to get home so he got in his car and...
“I didn’t...You said no one else was involved right?” Yunho found the courage to ask. He heard officer Kang say that it had just been his car and the lamp post, but he felt the need to confirm anyway. The older man nodded slowly, his face stern.
“Yes, this time and gratefully, no one else was involved. But do you have any idea how rare that is? Do you realize what tonight could have been?” Officer Kang looked pained. Like he had too many conversations just like this that had gone in a completely different direction. Yunho nodded slowly.
“I understand sir.” Yunho felt nauseated and sleepy and confused and remorseful. He just wanted to go to bed and not wake up. But it was only Wednesday. Well it was Thursday now. He pulled at his shackled wrist and noted the look Officer Kang gave. Disgust and irritation. Yunho had seen that look before. Often worn by his father when Yunho said, well, anything.
After a long pause he finally ambled over to Yunho’s bed and undid the cuffs. The right one and then the left one. With his wrists free, Yunho let out a sigh and began to massage them.
“The nurse will be back in with your discharge papers. She called your emergency contact and you’ll be released into their care. You are not to leave until they arrive. Upon release, you have 24 hours to check into rehab. If you refuse, you will have to report to and remain in jail until your court date which will be 3 months from today.” Officer Kang laid out the rules of Yunho’s release as he paced back over to the door. Yunho let the words sink in. Rehab. Jail. Court date. He had really fucked up this time.
Wait. His emergency contact. Oh God.
“Yunho are you actually serious?” His sister.
------
The sound of a blender and screaming children greeted Yunho as he stepped over the threshold to his sisters home. 2 blurs of blue and green raced by and nearly caused Yunho to fall over. God, he was still drunk.
“Hey! What did I say about running in my house?” Yunho’s sister, JiHye yelled from behind Yunho. He flinched, his ears ringing. A tall dark headed man materialized from the kitchen holding a large glass of something green and chunky. The sight of it made Yunho’s stomach jump. He had done a good job of not losing his liquids, but between the sounds and what looked to be a glass of boogers, he might not be strong enough. And what the hell was that smell? Like burning legos and eggs.
“You look like you got hit by a truck.” The other man commented before taking a sip from his glass of green goop. He didn’t bother reacting to his brother-in-laws' words. They didn’t see eye to eye and if it were left up to him, Yunho wouldn’t be here right now. Luckily for him, JiHye made all of the decisions and the money so her word was the law.
“Why don’t you go upstairs and shower. When you’re done, we can sit down and start looking at that list of rehab programs they gave you before I go to work.” JiHye’s voice was as soft as the hand she laid on Yunho’s shoulder. Yunho gave her a grateful look and nodded. He headed up the stairs to guest room where he often crashed on nights where he had gotten too drunk to remember his address and ended up. For some reason his sisters address was much easier to remember when he was drunk off his ass.
He stripped down out of his clothes and dropped them on the floor near the entrance of the attached bathroom. After turning on the water, he waited for it to get hot. Reluctantly he looked at himself in the mirror and winced. His right eye was puffy and had a dark tinge to it. His lip was split down the middle and there was a long cut across the bridge of his nose. Honestly, he was surprised that those were the only markings he got after wrapping his car around a lamp post. He probably hadn’t been going that fast. His car had only made it 3 blocks from the club he was leaving so he probably met the post after attempting to make a turn.
As the steam began to fog up the glass, he turned and stepped into the shower. He let the scalding hot water burn for a moment before making the adjustment to a more tolerable temperature. He showered without thinking and for the first time in what felt like days, his head didn’t feel like it was going to split in half and fall off his shoulders.
When he was done with his shower, he redressed in his pants and dress shirt and rolled up the sleeves. With one last deep breath, he went back downstairs where it was now eerily quiet. The weird smell was gone too. He glanced around the living room, looking for his sister. He spotted her behind the glass doors that led out to the back yard. She was sitting at the patio table staring off into space. He walked out and sat down in front of her. It took a moment before she broke out of her trance and noticed she wasn’t alone. She smiled at him but it didn’t reach his eyes.
“Feel better?” She asked. Yunho shrugged and looked down at the table. The list of rehab centers were laid out in the table. There were already red circles and highlights on the page.
“I don’t feel like I’m going to explode so I guess.” He tapped the paper. “So you’ve already done some research?” This time JiHye shrugged.
“I know money isn’t an option so I looked at the ones with the bigger price tags too. Some of these descriptions are top notch. They almost make me wish I could go.” She tapped at the third one on the page that was highlighted and starred. “I think this one is the best fit though. It’s in Andong. It’s a small group program that last for 2 and a half months which puts you back here in just enough time for your court date.” Yunho read the description and tried to resist the urge to roll his eyes. This place sounded cheesy and not like anything he wanted to do. But at this point he guessed he didn’t have many options left.
“Well if you think it’s a good idea, I’ll go. I’d rather not spend too much time researching.” It’s not like he had the luxury of time on his side anyway. Officer Kang and his discharge nurse had both made it abundantly clear that he only had 24 hours to report to rehab. JiHye nodded, already taking out her cellphone.
“I’ll call your assistant and have her send over a bag for you. I’ll have her contact your secretary next and get an email typed up to your boss to let him know you won’t be doing any work during the time of your treatment.” Yunho was nodding until the last bit of that sentence.
“I can’t not work, Ji. I’ve been building a relationship with my accounts for 8 years. I’m not about to just abandon them for 2 months!” That would be crazy. This was his livelihood. It’s what he was good at. JiHye just fixed him a pointed look.
“Yunho do you not get the gravity of this situation? This time is was a lamp post. Next time it’ll be someone’s kid or husband or wife or daughter.” She leaned in close to him and stared him straight in the eye. “You could have died, Yun. You could have killed yourself and someone else. Now is not the time to be worried about your fucking job.” With that she got up and went inside to start making calls. Yunho sat in silence alone on the patio.
For the first time, he noticed that it was a beautiful day. Clear and not a cloud in sight. And it was warm. Almost too warm to be early March. He fixed his gaze on a black and pink bike that lay abandoned in the middle of the large yard. One wheel was obviously bent and loose. It was broken.
He could relate.
