Petit Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

I've invented a new type of cuisine. I don't know whether to be delighted or embarrassed.

For some reason I needed biscuits and gravy. Is there a term for "vegan except for a copious amount of butter"?

I guess "not vegan" will do.

Today's weird Saturday breakfast appears to be a cauliflower-onion quiche with gorgonzola and fake bacon. (For the record, last Saturday, I made the black-bean cornbread skillet again, because Alana was visiting and it seemed like the easiest solution.)

Uh oh. This seems to be a trend.

Today I wanted cornbread and black beans. And so we had "Tex Mex Skillet Supper Corn Bread." Good recipe, bad name. Him: "We're out of coffee."

Me: "What?"

Him: "This has never happened before."

Me (starting to panic): "How can we be out of coffee? Don't we subscribe to coffee?"

Happily, we remembered the small can of Café du Monde that hides out away from the normal coffee zone.

Almost forgot to ask: am I the only person in the history of the universe who has ever made a white sauce as a replacement for the canned cream of mushroom soup called for in a recipe? Because I wanted tater tot casserole*, and apparently the can 'o' soup is de rigeur. Did I break some kind of universal law this morning? Whatever will become of us ( Read more... )

Last night we checked out Sushi Kame on Main Street in downtown Champaign. While the raw fish quality was variable, we had a type of maki that may very well be the most wonderful thing I have ever eaten. Strangely named "Popeye's Roll," it was an inside-out roll containing unagi, shrimp tempura, asparagus, and "crunch." Oh. My. God ( Read more... )

Someone please stop me from eating frozen burritos whenever I don't feel like cooking. Or, I dunno, make me feel like cooking again. I need some inspiration, dammit.
