For various reasons, I am putting aside my Cyberman helmet idea. Instead i have embraced a much more ambitious and horrible idea.

I've made some advances on the project over the past few days. I cut up part of Pringles can and laid it on the head to serves as the big headlamp. At Wal-Mart earlier this week I picked up an accessory kit for my dremel tool, and I got the eye holes and mouth cut out. I'd added a layer of paper towels on the helmet to see how it worked compared to the newsprint. I do like the effect and I may try it again. It seems a bit more solid than the newsprint and easier to spot gaps when I'm layering ( Read more... )

Everyone at the Halloween party was impressed with the helmet. And it was suggested I do a paiper-mache demo at the next Fencon. I am up for the idea, I've kind of been wanting to do more at the con than sit in the video room all weekend ( Read more... )

I got the helmet painted a nice brushed bronze color, and added some extra color on the lightning bolts on the sides. The spacking did a surprisingly good job of turning cheap paiper mache into something solid and hefty. After class today I hit the craft store to pick up the stuff I needed to finish the helmet. I bought a seven dollar pack of craft foam sheets, it had forty sheets in it and I've only used about three of them on the helmet. Not sure what else to do with the stuff except to use one sheet to replace my worn out mouse pad and store the rest. I may ( Read more... )

I have a nice thick layer of dry pulp over the helmet, and now I need a palm sander to get the next step done. It's pretty clear from working with just some sand paper this will need some powered assistance.
